I) December 26, 1895. 'THE WEALTH MAKERS. BELLAMY'S DREAMS. Almost Before We Know Jt Many of Them Will llaia Kecnme Actual Kealities. There is a talking newspaper pub lished in Budapesth. It is now in its third year and has six thousand sub scribers. The Vienna correspondent of the London Chronicle made the river journey of 130 miles from the Austrian to the Hungarian capital last month expressly to acquaint himself at first hand with this talking news paper. Here is his account of his first experience: ; While I was dressing1 the hotel serv ant knocked at my door and asked if I wanted the telephone paper. He then handed me two receivers about .the size of a pocket watch, attached to long cords, which can be fastened to the bed or arm-chair to suitone's con venience. "The newspaper will begin to speak directly," remarked the serv ant, "and will go on speaking until late in the evening." We don't charge 'our visitors anything for it, as it only costs us a penny a day." It was precisely 8:30 as I put the re ceivers to ray ears, and the day's work commenced for the newspaper. It be gan by transmitting the telegrams re ceived in the nirht from Europe and America in a clear, sonorous tone, quite free from the nasal twang of the ordi ' nary telephone. This went on till a quarter to 9, after which followed the daily calendar with metropolitan news, and the list of strangers who had ar rived at Budapesth up to the previous night How is it done? That's a rather long story; we will try to condense it. The newspaper that talks has its publica tion oilice, very much like the publica tion offices of other newspapers in some ways, but not at all like them in others. The principal editors are Bela Virag and Josef llorvath, journalists of experience and distinction. Besides the musical and dramatic critics, there are about forty reporters, and the subscribers themselves now take pleasure in telephoning in (through the Budapesth central office) any interesting items of news that come to their knowledge. The staff is on duty from 7:30 in the morning to 9:30 at night. Between these hours twenty-eisrht "editions" are sent out daily. After the manu script of the critic or reporter has been revised and approved by the editor, copied and registered, it is passed along to the speaker at the telephone. Ten men with strong voices and clear articulation act as "speakers," and take their turn in shifts of two at a time. One of these speaks a series of items, but for no louger than eight or ten minutes, and every new item is in troduced by the word "new." The 6,000 subscribers are served by one wire, measuring 168 miles in length, and running along the win dows of the subscribers. Each sub scriber forms a "station," and a sep arate line is connected with each sta tion by means of a special apparatus. The microphone plays a great part in the scheme, the voice of the speak er, before reaching the telephonic cir cuit, being first conducted into the mi crophone, thereby gaining consider able in volume. Each subscriber has a programme for the day, and knows just when in the ordinary course of things the news in which he is particulrrly interested will be along. A short summaiy of the more important news is given at noon, and a supplementary summary in the evening. Important speeches in the reichstag are going out over the telephone while the men making them are still on their legs. The Ilirmondo establishment is con nected by telephone with the opera house and several music halls. Toward evening, as the rush of news slackens, it serves music to its sub scribers. The first number of the nirmondo was uttered February 15, 1893. A month later Puskas was in his coffin. Fourth Estate. I)r. The fifth annual meeting of the Neb raska Cyclone Company will be held at Lindell Hotel, Lincoln, Xeb., Jun. 15, 1895. Tho nest day the Mutual Insurance association, composed of delegates and representatives of all companies that have members present, will hold a meet ing. We hope to meet several new faces this year, to talk over the work of mu tual men. The stock companies have their combination or secret trust in this state; why should not we as men who represent the interests of all fanners, organize to combat that gigantic com bination? Last winter there was un attempt to throttle mutual insurance and had it not been for a few vigilant men there would not be a mutual company in the state. Come and get into the wagon and help hold your ground. I hope every secre tary will send me during the second week in January the name and post ofllee ad dress of officers and directors, amount of insurance in January 1)5, amount gain in '95, fees collected during year, amount and ruto of assessment, if any, amount of losses paid, causes of same and what is the membership fee. We want to tabulate the business of all companies and to send a copy to the officers of all companies free. At the annual meeting tho following will bo some of the topics tafked on, and we hope every company will be represent ed. What is Mutual Insurance? What is to be gained by it? How should the accounts with agents be kept How should agents be paid? So much per policy, or a commission on amount written? Is there any rule y which it can be ascertained whether an animal was killed by lightning? Of what use, if any, are lightning rods? What reasons have your company for limiting the life of a policy to five years? Is there any need of a change in our mutual laws? Should we have a uniform policy for all mutual companies? If you can not come, we hope you will write us, on at least some of tho above questions, or any other that you con sider important. L. P. Our Sympathies Alwasa Enlisted In tb Infirmities of th Veteran. (From The Herald, Woodstock, Pa.) There s an old soldier in Woodstock, Va., who served in the war with Mexico and in the war of the rebellion, Mr. Levi .Mclnturl. lie passed through both these wars without a serious wound. The hardships, however, told seriously on him, for when the grip attacked him four years ago, it nearly killed hiiu. ho can look on the infirmities of a veteruu with out a feeling of the deepest sympathy? His townspeople saw him confined to his house so prostrated with great nervous ness that be could not hold a knife and fork at the table, scarcely able to walk too, and as ho attempted it, lie often stumbled and fell. They saw him treated by the best talent to be had-but still he suffered on for four yeurs, und gave up finally in despair. One day, however, he was struck by the account of a cure which had ben effected by the use of Dr. Williams' Pink Pills. He immediately ordered a box and commenced taking them. He says he was greatly relieved within three day's time. The blood found its way to bis fingers, and his hands which had beeu palsied, assumed a natural color and ho was soon enabled to use his knite and fork at. the table. He has recovered his strength to such an ex tent that he is able to chop wood, shock corn, and do his regular work about his home. He now says lie can not only walk to Woodstock, but can walk across the mountains. He is able to lift up a fifty-two pound weight with one hand and says he does not know what Dr. Williams' Pink Pills have done for others, but knows that they have douo a great work for him. He was in town last Monday, court day, and was loud in his praises of the medicine that had given him so great re lief. He purchased another box and took it home with him. Mr. Mclnturf is will ing to make affidavit to these fucts. The proprietors of Dr. Williams' rink Pills state that they are not a patent medicine, but a prescription used for many years by an eminent practitioner who produced the most wonderiul results with them, curing all forms of weakness arising from a watery condition of the blood or shattered nerves, two fruitful causes of almost every ill to which flesh is heir. The pills are also a specific for the troubles peculiar to females, such as suppressions, all forms of weakness, chronic constipation, bearing down pains, etc., and in the case of men will give speedy relief and effect a permanent cure in all cases arising from mental worry, overwork, or excesses of whatever nature. They are entirely harmless and can be given to weak and sickly children with the greatest good and withouttheslight est danger. Pink Pills are sold by all dealers, or will be sent post paid on re ceipt of price, (50c. per box, or six boxes for 2.50 they are never sold in bulk or by the 100) by addressing Dr. Williams' Medicine Compauy, Schenectady, N.
