Jane 27, 1895 8 THE WEALTH MAKERS. OUR PRECIOUS STONES. A DlaMond la Michigan Ruble and Xi raid la North Carolina Other Find. Washington, June 25. The report of the geological snrvej on the die orery of precious stones in the United States for 1894, compiled by Special Agent George F. Rung of New York, was made public to-day. The prin cipal derelopments of the year are summarized as follows: The finding of a 10 karat diamond at Dowagiae, . Mich, j developing of a new ruby mine near franklin, N. C; finding oi emer alds at Mitchell Peak and near Earls station, N. C; finding of a remarkably compact variscite giving a new orna mental stone called utahite, and smaller output of turquoise mines, due to the depressed financial conditions. The rumor that was circulated early in this year of the discovery of bril liant diamonds at Mount Edgecomb near Sitka, Alaska, was proved on in vestigation to be without foundation. Sapphire deposits are reported twenty five miles west of Phillirsbunr. Mont. 1,400 acres in extent A new locality of true emeralds was also found near Bakersville, N. G, and a big output is predicted upon development of the vein. The output of turquoises, of wnicn so large a quantity was mined during 1891 and 1892, was limited to not more than 930,000 for 1894. No new turquoise mines of value were opened. - A DANGEROUS MANIAC. VFlllUm Campbell Arrested on HI Way U Kill Mr. Cleveland. Clyde, N. Y., June 85. William Campbell, an old soldier from Buffalo, N. Y., who arrived here Saturday, told Chief of Police Hamilton that he was on his way to Washington to kill Gro ver .Cleveland. "I know the chap ' well," he said, "and I mean to put bin where he won't be able to do th old soldiers any more harm." Realizing that he had a crazy man to deal with, Chief Hamilton replied that he, too, longed to perform the same act, and suggested that they go together. "President Cleveland could be more easily assassinated by two men than by one, yon know," he said to the lunatic. To this the man assented, and away the two started. Chief Hamilton kept the man talking about himself and telling how he would carve President Cleveland until the village lockup was reached. At this point the man grew suspicious and wanted to know what they should do in that building. Chief Hamilton replied that they would step in to talk the matter over for a minute or two. The next second the lunitic was hustled into a cell " RECRUITS FOR REBELS. Spanish Volunteer and Other , Join th Cuban Force. Tampa, Fla., Juue ?6. Spanish papers which arrived here last night confirmed the report that Major Cas tallas, commanding the regiment of Camajuani, containing 400 Spanish volunteers had joined the insurgents. Perez was an official of the city of CamajuanL Passengers bring reports that on Thursday, in a fight at Coalitaz, iu the province of Santiago, Captain Miguel Campos, son of Captain General Miguel Campos, was killed.
