Jones, Shepherd and myself did the speaking. Very truly, F. D. Eager A Strong Candidate Named. Laubel, Neb., Sept 10, 1894. Editor Wealth Makers: ' At the Eighth district Senatorial con vention held at this place on the 8th. H. T. Ankey, a farmer living a few miles from town, was selected as the standard bearer. A better choice oould hardly be made. He was one of the first to leave the g. o. p. to help form the Populist party. He is a man who is honest, honorable and hits a record that needs no defender or apolgoy. He is firm In his convictions and conserva tive in his politics. Best of all he is in the middle of the road. Respectfully, J. Donreavy. A Catholic Colony. Mountair Grove, Mo , Sept. 15, 1894. Editor Wealth Makers: Will you publish this in your valua ble paper and oblige. My object is to form a Catholic colony In southwestern Missouri. Any one belongiof to that creed and wishing to emigrate to a good healthy country, with cheap lands, plenty of timber, good springs, finest vegetables and fruit lands In the United States, also good stock country and fine clover lands, will do well to take a trip to this, Wright county. Missouri Excur sion on the 25th of Sept. and 9th of Oct., via Mo. P, R.R. For information address with stamp. H. S. Keller. Shrader's and Hampton' Dates. OGALALLA, Neb . Sept. 18, 1894. Editor Wealth Makers: Meetings have been arranged at the following dates and places for Hon. C. D. Shrader, candidate for state senator, and Judge W. S. Hampton, candidate for representative: Sidney, Sept. 27th. ' Potter, " 28th. Kimball, . " 29th. Harrisburg, Oct. 1st. Ashford, " 2nd. Oering " 4th. The personal popularity of our candi dates is bo great that they are already developing a large amount of enthus iasm. Let those living in the vicinity of any of the above named places re member the dates and govern them selves accordingly. Keith county will roll up a Populist majority In November that will entitle her to a position among the banner counties of the state. Yours for success, Jas H. Barrett, Chra'a Sen. and Rep. Com. Literary Note. George K Holmes, the census expert, is the author o' a recent paper entitled "A Decade of Mortgages," published by the American Academy of political arid Social Science. In this paper Mr. Holmes gives the results of the Census investigation into mortgages and shows what conclusions can be drawn from these figures.' That the real estate mortgage debt of the whole country amounts to $11,000,000,000 seems almost incredible. Holmes, George K. "A Decade of Mortgages. The Keystone Dehorning Clipper Is the most humane, rapid and durable knife on the market for dehorning pur poses, and is madeofor the use of the farmer atd dairyman. It has been far more of a success than the Inventor even hoped for when first made. This new machine was thoroughly tried on stock, by numerous persons, the past season, and proved iteelf so far in ad vance of anything on the market, that today it practically stands without com petition. With It, one man can cut off the largest horn instantly, with a smooth, clean cut, without having the animal thrown, or In a chute, and without hav ing to twist the machine around the horn as is recommended by the circu lars iif some inferior machines. The Keystone challenges any other machine on the market to do this. A. C. Brosius, Cochranville, Chetter Co., Penna. Express office, Atglen, Penna. Ten cents for the campaign. Only ten cents. Or.rr.i.ur.u dene solicited. Fire, eyc.oue or ball SOLICITING COMPARfcD, In mutual companies agt nt are nally paid a stipulated amount per ap plication. Hence the agent is not In terested in over insurance. While U a stock company the aent is paid a percentage on the amount f acb or note he succeeds in loduf ibg toe nppu cant to give. And right h-re a ltwfme to add that that percentage h usually been one-fourth the amount of not or cash plus the wnole of any policy fee that he could extract from his victim (I think victim a proper word In this connection) The stock agent is there fore induced to secure as large an amount of insurance from the victim as possible, hence when a loss occurs the adjuster makes trouble with the victimized victim and will offer to set tle with only one-half or perhaps two thirds the amount the policy calls for; and almost every man will accept that amount rather than go into law. There fore the victim pays for insurance that he oan not get. I am sorry to know, however, that a few mutual companies pay their agents on the same plan aa the stock companies. Hence I predict that some time in the future they will suffer from that cause the same as the stock companies do now and always will. I have written insurance for men in our mutual company and gave them ample insurance at two-thirds the amount formerly carried in stock com panies. I have no doubt that my ex perience In this line can be verified by the secretaries of every mutual com pany in the state. Many men, in fact almost all men, who are insured in a stock company are paying for more insurance than they are at all liable to get in case of loss. The cause, can be laid down emphatic, that nine out of ten times the cause is with the agnt, who receives the pay for his work, from a standpoint that will Induce an unscrupulous man to overlnsure his victim, because he will get for a continued risk 50o. for each 1 100 Insurance. It has often seemed to us strange that stock companies would pay their men In a manner that would give them a premium to work against the Interest of the comyany. Even if the system is wrong the repre sentatives should not be paid to work against the interest of their employers. In time to come when the state does all the insurance and all losses are ad justed by the valuation placed on the property by the assessor, there will be several changes for the better, in amount of cost for insurance, in manner of adjustment in amount of money usually wasted to pay high salaries and exorbitant running expenses. If all of the Insurance public will patronize the mutual companies until they can be educated to the plan of state insurance. Thousands of dollars will be saved by our state. We shall write an article soon on this subject and ask for criticisms. PROMPT ADJUSTMENT. On August 18th, Louisa Mar met of Mlddleburg, Richardson county, had a barn and contents burned. Her loss was adjusted at $800 by the officers of the Richardson County Mutual Fire Company. She has been insured since October, 1889, and has paid all' told 18 10 on $2,650. The following letter from the secretary Is self-explanatory: Falls City, Neb., Sept. 13, 1894. Mr. Swlgart, Lincoln, Neb Dear Sir: 1 want to say in "the In surance department," that there Is no trouble in assessing and collecting from members or. the illchardson Uounty Mutual!! Ire and Ligntning lompany. We have been doing business over seven years, and our luck was such that we never had to make an assessment until this summer. In the mean time, agents of old line companies kept telling farm ers we never could collect and pay losses. They declared our first assess ment would break up our company. It did not prove that way. I mailed near 500 assessment notlcess to oir members August 8, 1894. and In five days I had sufficient money on hand to pay our $800 loss. I paid the lews more than a week prior to the time when payment was requested by the losers. I have undertaken many collections, but never saw anything paid so promptly and so cheerfully as this. Drouth and hard times had no powe to keep our Mutual people from Jolng as they agreed. Nearly all the old Una agents here have quit and gone into other business. I know only three in the county that keep on trying to Insure farm buildings. Very respectfully, Samuel Lichty. In these "hard times" anything that Is "free," and really worth having, is likely to attract attention. Well, the state offers six years of sound education in an almost infinite variety of subjects and courses, lnclud ing agriculture and shop work; and offers this free.
