July 3 and 4 was a great social and fi

every Alliance in the state to follow.
It they will spend their surplus for re

to the community.

GOVERNMENT OWNERSHIP,
Government ownership of railroads
and telegraph, ss advocated by the F
A. & I. V, is a very timely book just
reoeived for review. It was authorized
by the supreme coubcII of the National
Alliance, and written by U. L. Loucks,
ex-president of the National Alliance.
It answers the questions for this quar
ter's study and should be owned by
every Alliance. It will enable every
Alliance mem Jer to give a reason for
the faith we have that the government
ownership of our highways is the only
remedy for railroad strikes and the only
mean of securing justices to the people,
in the exchange of their products.
There Is a great effort being made to
induce us to believe the transportation
question is of little or no importance,
but as long as the rule is to charge all
the traffic will bear, when prices ad
vanoe rates do the same. This can
never be a government for the people
while all our means of transportation
of wealth or news is owned by soulless
corr orations, who are today defying
the authority of the government to
make themcarrj mails or freight with
out th;y run the Pullman caw, and who
own the executive of the nation and al
ms;; every state, who seek to do their
bidding regardless of the welfare of the
rst of the nation. It is time this book
was read by Alliance members who
should bear In mind that it It the posl.
tlon taken by the National Alliance and
that every true member will do all In
power to aid In bringing about
these objects. Price 2 cents. The
New Mouey S?yUm by the same author
gives the portion of the National Alll
ance on the money question. It should

A Barbecue at Hailing Aug. 22.
Hastings, Neb., July 10, 1804.
Editor Wealth Makers:
Will you please give room in The
Wealth Makers for these few lines,
As there has been much said through
some of the Populist papers in regard
to the delegates and others that are
wishing to attend the state convention
at Grand Island, and the main road
for many of thedelegates isto come by
the way of Hastings, the central com
mittee of the People's Independent
party of Adams county wishes to invite
all delegates and others that wish to at
tend the state convention from Nuckols,
Clay, Webster and Kearney counties,
or any other county or perons, that wish
to join with the People's Independent
party at Hastings on the afternoon and
evening of August 22, that there will
be a grand barbecue and festivities,
here then which will render the occa
sion highly enjoyable.
There will be addresses by several
noted orators, such as Benater Allen, as
we have written him to be with us on
the grand occasion.
As soon as we hear from each county
and learn what they will do, and if they
conclude to join with us at Hastings,
we'shall make arrangements with Hates
and other arrangements. The firms say
they will furnish feed for the most of
the teams. But let all come prepared
to feed themselves. But I will inform
them later on.
We expect to fill the streets of Hast
ings on Aucust22 to their full capacity,
but no doubt but we will be ordered "off
the grass.
I am a York state man, was born in
1827; cast my first vote for Taylor, next
voted for John C. Fremont; was at
Chicago at Lincoln's first convention,
and cast my last Republican vote for
Garfield and never voted Democratic;
and I am today a straight ln-the-middle-of
-the-road Populist and will not sup
port a man that is not a straight in-the-mlddle-of
ihe-road Populist. No good
Populist could t ver think for one minute
tbat he could or would cast his vote for
a fusion candlda'e, for this has beat the
Populists every tlme.and would as long
as it was continued.
Yours for the right,
John E. Makers
