After so thorough a discussion of
"eteodard bearers" through your valu
able paper, It seems to me nothing
ould be more appropriate thaa frank
discussion o! the platform of principle!
h.t.hniM ha looted at our next
state eonvtntfott.
The honest parpose of the People's
party la Nebraska, as shown by ite
record, places It before the people tale
fall ai the exponent of truth and prin
ciple. Let me suggest that the ptat
fora should be made of epeclflo prom
ises, so straight forward and clothed In
language so plain tbat no man can mis
take their meaning.
Our people no doubt entertala many
hooest differences of pinion as to state
legislation, and the, state conveetlon In
Its confusion is not place calculated
to give opportunity for the ntost care
ful consideration of them.
More depends upon our platform than
upon the men who stand before the peo
ple as its repreeeatotlve.
I refer to that part of the platform re
)atna tn state iiuies. as the people of

of speclSo legtelatlon at this time, knit
to call the attention of our party to
ome matters that sheuld challenge the
most careful intention of our next etsto
'convention. '
First of aliis'the matter of taxation,;
And we should -promise such laws and
their execution as will catch every tax
dodger in Nebraska and compel trim "to

The prlndple-ehould be, tat'ril.propi

Then we should re-enact the maxi

I wish also to call attention to the
.question of arbitration in thUiOonnee
tion. This question has attracted not a
little attention from an international!
standpoint, and has been by soon Hd vo-
cated as tbe ultimate so! u Men of ibrl
problem of settlement of all diffa:vi.cis j
Its application (s not general in any u-!
partment of government, yet in juaij
states, inoluding our own, authority to
settle by arbitration hag been granted
by statute. Whatever eo ice si ng exist

granted in suoh a manner as to be im
perative. I believe tbat tbe people now do not
understand bow certainly the preeent
application of law deffeats Justice.
I think I am safe when I say that all
'judgments . rendered In our courts In
civil actions In Nebraska for any given
year will not equal the cost of litiga
tion in the same class of cases for the
aarne timu
I his statement may eeem extrava
gant, yet you will find upon investiga
tion that I have not even now stated
the whole truth.
Let us declare for compulsory arbitra
tion and then enaot such laws as will
bring it into practical operation at the
earliest possible moment.
Iknow thtrsare those who believe
that such a law is unconstitutional, and
this bring me to tiio consideration
vsry briefly of one nore thoi'ght.

The insincere world Is tbe property of
the quack and by the ballot box we only
alter the figure of our quack. The valet
world has to be governed by tbe sbam
hero, by the king in merely king r ear,
Carlyle.
The one thing which has tbe greatest
tendency to make a man feel less a man
is to know tbat he has been duped.' If
you but gsze upon the political aspect
of our country today, you will not only
see that men have been duped, but you
will that a nation has been duped
as well. This is not attributed to one!
political party bat to all. '
Republicanism does not mean infalli
bility,, nor Democracy the people, nor
Prohibition prohibition. Republicans
will scout at the Infal.lbillty of the pope,
yet If ' aught in our nation goes
wrong they cry, "I told you so" In
fallibility. If one man cannot be in
fallible neither can a number of men.
(Democracy says, we are for the people,
buttba'. people is the Democratic party
means or qualifications. Says Mrs
Ward in her late book on labor and
socialism. "The brilliant reformer who
has no true manhood will be no good to
any cause."
Van Zand? Gocnouer.
THE WORST YET.
while Prohibition is too Illogical to
waste words upon.
Tho above quoted writer says further
"The history of all rebellions, French
revolution, social explosions, in ancient
or modern times, 1 -you have put tbe
too unable men at the head of affairs.
Indigent misery and maises of failure
are due toquaokaydntinlstratlon." What
you ask has brought about this quack
imo? It has been brought about be
cause men have bad more faith in party
than In principle. In order to judge
manfully the vetor roust first be a mas
To believe what the average quack
politician preaches to you, is to be lews
than a citizen. Road philosophically
widely, not locally, and jou will be
come a voter for the advancement of
manhood In Che state, and not for the
advancement of a few 'political dorna-
goguot , who are annually hired by
candidates asd parties to give you this
quack master, which 'if rightly namsd
would be labeled "Lies.". Take it
regularly as prescribed and you'll be
come a corrupter, and tbe man wbo
gives it is a(ooatied) .gentleman. We
are told that understanding is not
tool by which ome party or set of men
are to handle you, but a hand by which
you can handle; any tool. Again
Carlyle says, 'tdiet tho true Intellectual
tbe noble-hearted man, the just, humaac
and valiant man, et him for ruler, for
legislator and 11 is got. But again tbe
question confronts us: 'How are we to
know the truetust, humane snd vallavt
man? First, we oan know him by
being true ourselves. .None but shams
are governed by sbams. Or, in the
words of Shakespeare, "To thine own
iV be true, atvd it follows, as tb night
t.be day, tbou cans' t not then ba falco to
ny man." 8?endlyr we can know the
Qunck by his wwn advertisement of him
self, Like qsaefc doctor and nostrums
he will placard tbe country with his
merits a regular panacea. Hut when
he gets to Washington be proves to be
a bundle of selMntereet and self
aggrandizement.
But recently Eon. Wm. Prentlsf, an
eminent lawyer of Chicago, in a speeoh
before tne Iroquois Uamocratlo Club
said: "We are in the e loom of despond.
Why are we here? Because we are not
honest. If Cleveland bad been is zeal
ous in Adjusting our laws as he was In
placing his friends on the beneb, the
country would be better. Tbe present
sossloa w Congress teaches us we can
not look to the Kist for our next presi
dent, for eelf-lnter est Is too strong there.
We must look to tbe Weet, where the

Here we have the words of a wan al

Cheeky Thieves Bob a Hamilton
County Farmer and Boast of It.
Yesterday afternoon saw the coolest
swindle perpetrated upon Christian
Koeffler, a young German farmer of
Doepwell.preclnct in this county, that
can be dug up even in this era of daring
robberies both public and private.
Some days ago he was visited by a
sleek looking gentlsman claiming to be
I establishing agencies for the "Ameri
can Slckcl and Dlso Sharpener Co!
Had It been 'Sharper Co.' instead of
'Sharpener Co," tbe title would have
been more accurate. The machine
seemed to work well and as tbe young
man bad no small grata and his time
wasn't werth to exceed 4,00 per hour,
they soon fixed up a deal to the effect
tbat Christian was to stct as their agent
for Hamilton county. Merely as a mat
ter of formality they cot bimtowlgn a
paper accepting the agency. The sleek
looking gentleman then bade hi victim
good day, and meaitatly wishing bim a
merry Christmas, disappeared perm a
nently from tbe scene of action. Yester
day afternoon t woo ther telloww-equally
slet. looking came to the Held where
Christian was plowing half a mile from
tbe bouse, and sked him where ho
weuld like to have his sharpeners de
mered, stud they bad them all at
J'irillips, a few miles distant, and that
they would like bim to pay freight and
arrangs for paying for the sharpeners
tie if-yuireci wnat was meant and was
told that he had signed an order for 144
harpenerstC each) atd tbat on pay
ment of (1006 they would go their way.
Christian was pai a'yzed, but Insisted
that he had never ordered the goods
and that he could not possibly handle
them. In this they agreed, and afkr
considerable oratory and as a special
flavor they offered to settle far 1100 00.
At last. when It was nearly night the
young man gave way and signed a note
for $100 payable February 7, W9S. Tbe
payor's name as be remembers it being
Dray and there being a property state
ment on the back of the note. After
tbe successful issue of their little gamo
they wad merry and confidential,
They told him the whole business was
a frud; that they had no sharpeners at
I 'hllllpti; tbat they were expert ang
lers for suckers and tbat he was only a
very moderate sized fish In tpnir pisca
torial collection. They showed bim a
batch of notes among which be renvm
bers one on a Clay oountv roan for 825,
, 4 on on a nltl.en of Hall county for

morning ana tne tamt or notifying
banks and s attempting to regain his
eMs was duly commenced. With
much formality the stable was duly
locked tbe next morning after tho
horse was stolen aud an experience that
will deter one man and probably but
one man from dealing with smooth
strangers passed into history. The
scalawags wbo add insult to perjury,
and rob with the effrontery of a Barrett
Scott or Capital National will pro

lucrative public omce before they close
their career. They deserve summary
'rmtment. Faroisrs should at once
place a strong club chosen with parti
cular reference to durability where
they can lay their bands upon it at a
moment's notice, and when the first
stranger asks them to sign their name,
repeat over the remarks tba. they think
occurred to Christian Koefller when he
felt o like breaking over his custom
punctuating and mphalzlng their
discourse with the club. This is about
tbe only recourse tbey have. Tar and
feathers being some what in the line of
a luxury tbee times.
