HON, I). T WE LTV.
If there is a man in this state
who deserves the gratitude of the
whole people of his section of the
state, that man ii Hon. I). T.
Welty. As judge of the Four
teenth judicial district he has saved
that portion of the state from utter
financial ruin. He has been the
true friend of the money lender as
well as the impoverished farmer.
While he held in check the greed
of the mortgagor, that if left to it
self would have depopulated the
country and made the mortgage
practically worthies?, he saved the
farmer his home and gave him a
chance to pay off his debt. If
there is patriotism left among the
citizens of his district he will be
re-elected by a practically unani
mous vote. It has been the fash
ion in this state in the years past,
whenever a man undertook to
serve the people and keep the
hands of corporation cormorants
and money lenders from taking
their little all, to turn him down
at the next election, but the peo
ple have been learning better than
that in the last font or five years.
Judge Welty will be re-eh eted by
an overwhelming majority.

Evi'.uv populist who wants to
work in this campaign should get
Edgerton's Populist Hand Book.
This is not an advertisement, it is
the opinion of the editor and pub
lished because he knows that the
facts in that book will enable them
to be more efficient in the work of
reform. The Populist Hand Book
and Indki'Kndknt one year for a
dollar.
Tut State Journal is very much
troubled over some remarks which
this "local populist organ" as it
calls the Indi:i'Kndknt, made about
the county fair management. It
makes a statement that will stagger
any honest man who sees it when
it says in substance that the pops
managed the county fair. It don't
deny that they hired 139 special
police to maintain order during
one of the most peaceable days
Lincoln ever had.
Tin. Indki'Kmiknt has the en
dorsement of Gov. Ilolcomb, all
the state officers, our whole con
gressional delegation, and many
leaning men throughout the state.
It will be well for county commit
tees throughout the stcte to send
for sample copies. Besides the
news of the campaign, every issue
will contain sound economic arti
cles that will te of great value to
all speakers and workers tor the
populist cause.

Men who have subscribed for this
paper and have been receiving it
for some time without paying their
subscription should remember that
it is a very serious thing to the
men who are trying to build up a
strong straight, populist paper to
be forced to buy paper and ink and
pay out clean cash week after week
and furnish the paper without re
turns in cash from those who re
ceive it.
Besides our large regular edition,
we this week issue 5000 extra
copies to supply an actual demand
for sample copies sent in before we
went to press. The leading popu
lists of the state and Lancaster
county are determined that the
rank and file of the party shall at
least see one copy of a sound,
straight populist paper, that teaches
scientific political economy and
turns its back upon all isms and
theories not found in the party
platform.
Do the taxpayers of Lincoln like
Boss Thompson's method of rustl
ing an extortionate lighting con
tract for five years through the
council in one evening under a
suspension of rules, without giving
the people a chance to see and
consider the contract? If it was
fair and just to tax payers, it would
not have hurt Mr. Thompson to
let the lighting ordinance pass in
the usual way. But the we pre
siinnt that is the modern republican
way of bilking the people.

Mi friend, if yu just give oilier peipi

If tharo wazn't euny phools this

even cunning.
If it whs uginst the law to guess nt
things, we wouldn't kno mutch.
One ov the strongest points in the
devil's karuktpr iz. never to konslder
enny tiling out ov biz reach.
Whenever i hav undertaken to plan a
gratuitous amusement for others, 1 hav
allways failed. The best way iz to let
every one pay his munny, and then pile
out his own game.
Ilettuig on a sure thing iz no better
than stealing it.
Kind Heaven knu that lazynss wnss
the strongest habit ov the heart. This
makes that plaintive refrain, "Itoot.
hog, or die," sound alimost like revulu
cliun. We all ov us owe to our vanity more
than we would like to be told ov.
Sum ov the most modest and humble
