Luther und der Krieg. Jn der »Magddd. Zeitung« lesen wit. Ein deutscher Mann und ein Christ zugleich, wie wenig andere. Martin Luther-, hat sich in seiner Schrift: »Di- Kriegslesnie auch im seligen Stande sein können« folgendermaßen über den Krieg geäußert: »Daß man nun viel chreibt nnd sagt, welch eine große lage Krieg sci, das ist alles wacht-; aber man sollte auch daneben ansehen, wie viel mal größer die Plage ist, der man mit Kriege-i wehrt. II, wenn die Leute sroemn wären mü gern Frie den hielten, so wären Kriege die größte Plage ans Erden Wo rechnest du aber hin, daß die Welt böse ist, dir Leute nicht wollen Frieden halten rauben s en, töten, Weilt und Kind schänden, hre und Gent nehmen«-, Solchen gemeinen Allerwcsltslinsrie den, Max kein Mensch bleiben tönn te, muß der kleine Unfriede, der daz Krieg oder Schwert heißt, steuornt Darum ehrt auch Gott das Scham-ri acso hoch, dass er’O seine eigene Ordil nnng heißt, und will ncht, daß man sagen oder wähnen Menschen tman I erfunden oder eingeseyt Denn woi das Satoert nicht wehrte und Fries-s den hielte, so müßte es alles durch’ uns-im verderben wag in der Werts ist. Und auch die Kranlen selbst sehen ein, daß sie ihren Stainmesåes nossen nicht zur Last fallen dürfen. Die Lepraerkranckungen auf Olchon nehmen daher gewöhnlich folgenden Ausgang:« Einer der nächsten Ver-. wandten des Lepratranken gibt den! Anssätzisgen einen Strick. I c v o u r Æ Eine unverhoffie Freude wurde einem Vater zuteil, der durch eine Depesche aus La Crosle, Wis» die Nachricht erhalten hatte, daß sein Schn Harry bei einem Eisenbahnun fall in der Nähe von Burlington um gekommen sei. Der alte Vater machte sich sofort von seiner Heimat in e»dan ville, Jll» aus aus den Weg nach La lsrossk, wo ihm in der Morgue die Nachricht wurde, daß sein Sohn noch i kkkc nnd im Hospitat zu finden sei Die Freude des Vaters war um so großer, als sich herausstellte, day kein Sohn auch nicht schwer verletzt wor den wcr nnd wieder hergestell-: werden wird. Das erste, was nun der Vater tat, wen-, ein Telegramen nach Das-. ville zu senden, in dem er the bereits angeorvikten Vorbereitungen zur de erdkgung seines Sohnes widerrief. —- Wegen Vergebens gegen das Weingesetz und wegen Nahrungs mittelsälschung wurde in Berlin der Weinhändler San Sehn-einer zu 700 Mart Geldstrafe, Einziehung und Vernichtung der beschlagnahmten Weine und Publikation des Urteils in Berliner Blättern verurteilt. Wie die Beweisausnahme ergab, hatte der Angeklagte aus billigem Tarragonas Wein und Heidelbeersast einen Mischs masch hergestellt und bald als »roten Dessertwein«, bald als »Blutwein« ,,zur Kräftigung von Kranken und Retonvaleszenten" in den Verlehr ge bracht. Ferner hatte er aus Tarrai gona - Wein, Wasser, Sprit und Weinsteinsäure ein Getränk hergestellt, das als ,,Tarragona«, »Blutroter Medizinalwein« u. s. w. verkauft wurde. Jn ähnlicher Weise wurden andere Weine durch den Zusatz von Wasser, Sprit und sonstigen Jngre dienzien »veredelt«. Als »Maitrant« brachte der Angeklagte ein Gemisch aus Wein, Aepfelwein und großen Quantitäten Zuckerwasser· in den Handel. Um seine Panschereien zu verdecken, hatte der Angeklagte die vorgeschriebenen Bücher absichtlich salsch geführt. —- Ein vergebliches Opser brachte die Arbeiter-in MarieComask zewsta, die sich der Berliner Polizei selbst stellten-m ihrenBräutigam zu be freien. Das Mädchen hatte einen Arbeiter, der sich aus der Durchreise in Neutölln aushielt, kennen gelernt und ihm das Porternonnaie mit der Barschast aus der Tasche gestohlen. Dem Beraubterr«war es ausgesallen, das; sich ein Mann immer in der Nähe seiner Begleiterin gehalten und auch mit ihr gesprochen hatte. Er beschrieb ihn der Kriminalpolizei so genau, daß diese in ihm den 25 Jah re alten »Arbeiter« Michael Barton erkannte und in einer Kneipe fest-« nahtn. Die Diebin aber war nicht zu ermitteln, und der Verhaftete, der von dem Gelde des Mädchens lebte, verriet sie auch nicht. Die Comaszelvitla aber tonnte es nicht verwinden, das-, ihr Geliebter für ne im Gefängnis sihen mußte. Um ihn zu befreien, ging sie zur Polizei und zeigte sich selbst an. Sie wurde eben falls hinter Schloß und Riegel gr setzt. Ihren »Briiutigam« aber lief-, man nicht stei, sondern behielt ihr wegen Anstistung und Beihilfe zum Diebstahl weiter in Haft. Als dieser Tage Frl. Cdnnl Wood, eine Lehrerin der Marguerite Avenue - Schule in Wilmerding, Pa» l in ihre Wohnung kam, fand sie die-i selbe in Flammen dor, und nach eini gem Suchen durch die von Rauch und Flammen durchzogenen Zimmer ent deckte sie im Keller ihre Mutter, die mit brennenden Kleidern und mit schweren Brandwunden im Gesicht und an den Händen bewußtlos ain Boden lag. Die zielen Frauen und Kinder, welche sich gerade auf der Brücke befanden, wa ren starr vor Entsetzen, als Braus der ruhig bis zur Mitte der Brücke gegangen war, plötzlich über das Ge länder stieg und lopsiiber sich hin aisssziirztr. Er landete aus der rech ter Gesichtseite im Wasser, lain aber nach wenigen Setnnden wieder an die Oberfläche und schwamm auf das Islser zu.
