Und am Tisch der Jugend, der abseits von den Tafeln des reiseren Alters stand, wurde die Kostiimfrage zu diesem Fest so leidenschaftlich er örtert, daß selbst während der Rede des Herrn Vorsitzenden eine vollkom men aufmerksam Zuhörerschaft »un ter den jungen Damen und Herren , nicht erreicht werden konnte. ,,Pssssst!«... machten etn paar würdige Herren nach dem Tisch der Jugend hinüber. Es half nicht viel. Und die Frau Regierungsrat Hop pe nahm sogar ostentativ ihr lang gestieltes Augenglas und fixierte die unruhigen Geister mit empörtem Kopfschiitteln »Natürlich," meinte sie flüsternd su ihrer Nachbarin, »wenn Fräulein Gerhard und here Jngenieur Rie mann zusammensitzem kann man nicht auf unaestörte Ruhe während der Rede des Vorsitzenden rechnen. Es ist kaum glaublich, wie sich die junge Dame aussallend benimmt!« Die andere lächelte begütigend. ,,Jugend bleibt Jugend, und wills sich amiisieren. Und die beiden Leutchen passen so gut zusammen. Das Mädel hat Schick, und der« Mann hat Schneid. Das Mädel begann plöhlich ganz ungewohnt zu stottern, als sie das bochmütige Mädchenantlisz sah. Sie konnte doch der nicht erzählen, das-, Vater so eine weite Reise bisher zu teuer gewesen, weil die Jungen stu dierten und sie selber so viele Haus haltungskurse im Lettehause gehabt, was alles viel Geld gekostet. Sie schwieg darum und preßte die Lippen aufeinander, um vor dem Manne, dem sie ihr Herz geschenkt, nicht schwach zu werden und ihr gro ßes Leid zu verraten, das mit sei nem Jnteresse für die andere und elegantere in ihr Leben gekommen war. , Ob sie wirklich dem Alpenfest, worauf sie sich das ganze Jahr ge freut, fernbleiben sollte? Nur um so ein dummes Kleid, das echt sein sollte? Nicht tanzen, eine bürge, se lige Nacht hindurch, nicht das ver traute, süße Du zu dem heimlich Geliebten sagen zu können, das wäh rend des Festes üblich war, und ju gendfroh im kurzen, bunten Rock das ungebundene Treiben mit fröh lichen Menschen genießen? Sollte sie deshalb ganz fernbleiben von dem herrlichen Alpenfests Nein, das ging über ihre Kraft. Jch würde mich fehr freuen, ihn wieder zufehen.« Das junge Mädchen schüttelte den Kopf. Sie hatte offenbar Eile,-von der alten, neugierigen Dame fort und zum Tanze zu kommen. »Nein, ich bin nur mit Mama nnd meiner Tante hier. Papa macht nichts mit, er muß fehr ruhig leben.... ach, hören Sie doch hloßL Herr-Rie mann, der wundervoue Watzer:"... Und schon hielt der Bua das sich ihm entgegenneigende Deandl im Arm und tanzte mit ihr davon. Die alte Dame saß wieder allein. Aber das glückliche Lächeln, das so eben noch in ihrem Antlitz gewesen, war nicht mehr da. »Also das ist fre,« dachte sie be stürzt-, »die deinem Jungen jetzt in den le ten Wochen den Kopf ver dreht ai, das ist Fräulein Jlse Gerhard, deren Vater sich um das Wohlleben don Frau und Tochter trank arbeitet. um alle Wünsche der beiden verwöhnten Damen Unerfül len. Das ist· sie... in dem echten Kleide über dem falschen Herzen.«... Oh... wie oft hatte sie aus den Gesprächen dessschwer leidenden Di reltors im Sanatorium die Sorge um diese Tochter berausgefiihlt. »Grüaß Gott!« sagte da eine jun ge Stimme in die Gedanken der al ten Dame hinein. Und über ihre derschlungenen Hände neigte sich ein frischer Mund zum Kasse. »Grüaß Gott!« wiederholte »diese überrascht. War das nicht die kleine Lisa Struct, dieses blonde, süße Deandl in dem blauen Waschtleid chen, links ein« dicker, blonder Zon und rechts ein dicker, blonder Zopf über der Schulter? Der alten Dame wurde das Herz warm. Sie drehte das Mädel ein paarmal um und bewunderte. »Das leibhafte Bergtind aus dem Zillertal!« meinte sie dann. ,,Wo ha ben Sie bloß dieses fesche Kleidel hers« Lisa wurde sehr rot ,,Ach... gnädige Frau..· es ist ja gar nicht echt! Jch habe es mir doch selbst genäht. Vater hatte späit Dienst, und... und es ist Glatteis draußen... da hieß es, vorsichtig gehen.« s Lisa zapfte an ihrem roten Bun del, das sie am Arm trug »Wenn ich gnädige Frau eine Ap felsine oder einen Apfel anbieten darf-« wir haben unseren Provi ant im Tafchentuch gleich mitge bracht, man muß fo lange warten auf die Bedienung bei einem fo überfiillten Fest, und... und es ift auch alles fa schrecklich teuer hier.« Die alte Dame griff lachend in das dicke, rosenrote Bauernbiindel »Das lobe ich mir, das ift riesig; praktisch, ich habe fchan vor einer halben Stunde ein Brötchen befielltj und nach leins bekommen. Wissens Sie was, Kindchem fest holen Sie Vater und Mutter mal rafch an met-? um Tisch her, den uns mein Junge; wohlmeislich vorher befiellt bat ltieri im tfaal. und wir machen eine, aemtli Runde zufammen. Da begann das ganze blondzopfi ge Bergkind zu zittern, fo daß der Bua sofort zugriff. »Mir san die lusi’gen Holzhacker buabn«, intonierte die Bauexnrnusit oben auf dem bunibewimpelien Holz ballonr. »Hab’n wir la Geld, so tanzen mir in d’ Stuabn«, fang der Mann sofort, indem er das Deandl feft und sicher durch das Gewühl dirigier ie. Ein schweres Stück Arbeit, dachte er; doch da begegnete er dem Blick Glotvallas, nnd sofort stlhlte er eine Art Zuneigung zu dem Manne. Was hatte der häßliche Mensch doch für große, schöne Augen! Sie begriffen es» nicht, warum Leutnant Guitenbergi gerade diesen ,,Affenmenfchen«, diefeni »Ein-illa« — das waren die Spihnas men des Kanoniers in der Batterie — vor allen anderen bevorzugte. - Wachtmeifier Knrrenfchwerrt undT die Batterieunterosfiziere mußten sich Glawallab wegen tatfiichlich fcharfe Worte gefallen laffenz nicht, weil sich der Relrut in den wenigen Wochen der Ausbildung aus einem lnorrigen, fchiefen Kiefernftamme nicht zu einer sschlankem biegsamen Tanne verwan delt hatte, sondern weil sie den Mann falfch behandelten. Bemerlte er dies, dann konnte der junge Offizier fo energisch werden, dafz ihnen ein heil samer Schreck in die Glieder fuhr. Er erhielt ihn gern zugeteilt, weil der Mann bei jeder Besichtigung immer nur unangenehm auffiel. Jetzt sollte Glowalla mit feinen schweren Fäusten bei dem unt-erhei raieten Ofsizier Dienste verrichten. die eigentlich Frauenhänden zukamen. Beim Aufräumen legte er die zierli chen Nippfiguren vorsichtig auf feine breite Dandfliiche, unt von dem Ver tilu den Staub wifchen zu können.
