No one ever accused Briggs of trading off his principles or anything else to elevate the democrats to office. It is not macb over a year ago, however, that be was willing to trade off those principles, if I offered he ever had any, to elevate himself to office, securing a place on the fusion ticket for the express purpose, as many believed, of weakening it. He knew that while he would drive fusion votes away from the other candidates, he could depend on securing every republican vnt which Milt 1'olk could control. The result proved that he bad sized up the situation correctly and as Polk inti mates, he knew much about "practical politics." He was turned down by every populist and democrat who was acquainted with him and his methods, but he secured many, many, republi can votes. Prior to that time his work for Polk and the republicans had been secret, but since that time he has been grow ing bolder all the time and has at last gone over bodily. 'Tie better so.
