But for the Venezuela' incident Mr. Cleveland would have gone out of the presidency the most unpopular and cordially hated man that ever occupied that chair. The Irish National League promptly came to the front with the otter or a 100,000 armed, drilled and equipped men. readv and anxious to fight the British till the last armed foe was ex pired. It is estimated by a competent au thority that the average cost of the gold now being: mined at Cripple Creek Colo., is seven centsTfor every dollar turned out by the lucky miners. Sil ver mining could not run as cheap as that. The president has surprised the whole world by bringing in a message taking strong and popular ground in favor of the Monroe doctrine as ap plied to the Venezuelan dispute, and there is every indication that the doc ument will bring Johnny Bull to teims. The republicans pretend to be very much of a jingo party as against Eng land but when it comes to proposing a system of finance that is not dictated by British financiers, and is in the in terest of the people of this country, the republicans raise their hands in holy horror at the suggestion. The Tribune editor has evidently forgotten the- oath of allegiance he took to the United States government when he got his first citizen papers, and imagines himself still a subject of Great Britain at least the effort made to criticise President Cleveland in last evening's paper has that sort of a look to it. Better go across the water if you want sympathy for Jouh Bull. British newspapers are expressing astonishment that the president should have issued that message, and seem to think nobody but his party will back him up. If the British lion could un derstand how it is that everybody, in every party has put his fighting suit on and is for backing up the president teeth and nail he would be inclined to take his paw away from those Venezu ela preserves, and admit that be was only fooling. The house of congress yesterday took up the question and promptly passed unanimously a bill authorizing the president to appoint a Venezuelan commission and appropriating $100,000 for expenses. There was a very ludi crous side to the brief debate before the passage of the bill, when Boutelle of Maine, the most rampant jingoist in all the country opposed, the passage of the bill without its reference to a com mittee for fear that too much haste might be exhibited! His partizan hatred of Cleveland got the better of him and for once he was beaten at bis own game.
