POLITICAL rEKFIDY AUROAD. The general harmony in the repub lican ranks in this county has been sadly disturbed of late, and it is easy to see that unless the bosses have their way and the other fellows calmly lie down and permit themselves to be trodden on there will be no peace. The trouble originates, as usual, in the third ward where so many statesmen dwell. It is no secret that Chairman Newell had planned the nomination of Robertson for cle.rk, and that he also wants Williams for sheriff as an off set for the far more important event, the nomination of Davis for treasurer. But the result of the primary in that ward slightly disarranged plans pre viously made. Mr. Newell was not put on the delegation, but his next friend, Atwood, was. After the pri mary word was given out that Mr. At wood had admitted that the primary election was practically an instruction to the delegation for Ilolloway, and he would take it that way; but lately the fact has leaked out that a part of the delegation have been doing some mis sionary work among other delegations against the young bicyclist and for Mr. Williams, evidently because the interests of the leaders as to the treasurership clash with those of Hol lo way's, and they want Mr. Davis nom inated, even if it has to be done in de fiance of the instructions of the ward primary. Since this came out it has created no disorder, and there is no end to the "ruction" now ruuning riot in the ranks. The opinion is freely ex pressed that there is a strong deter mination among those highest up in Dartv circles in town to nominate Davis for treasurer at any cost. INTERESTING ITEMS. Dr. Marshall. Dr. John Black was taken seriously ill Sunday afternoon with an attack of paralysis, and for a time it was be lieved that he could not recover. His condition is reported better today. The Burlington will stop passenger train No. 5. at all points between Cres ton, la., and Omaha during state fair week. Visitors to the fair on this train can return home on No. 12, leav ing Omaha at 7:50. Mrs. Henry Evers and children, of Flainview, Neb., are visiting in this city, the guest of her sister, Mrs. Chas. Kunzmann. The Weekly Journal has a number of subscribers at that postorfice all of whom were formerly Cass county people. It is pleasant to hear that they are all prospering this year, having abundant crops. The Retort Courteous. Thieves at Nebraska City entered a man's garden in broad daylight and stole a wagon load ol sweet potatoes and drove off with them. That is a sample of Nebraska City nerve. Flatt8mouth News. The thieves were traced up the river in the direction of Flattsmouth and it is presumed sweet potatoes are a scarcity there. Nebraska City Press. New York Bakery Removed. The New York bakery, owned by C. Sahl, has removed to the east room of Fitzgerald block where he has just completed the best oven ever built in the city. The best bread, cakes and pies ever turned out by a baker in Plattsmouth always on hand. All are invited to call and leave orders. C. Sahl. Thefollowing interesting letter! rem Judge ltamsey, through the negligence of the postal authorities between here and Deadwood, did not arrive till this morning, although the judge returned last night: Deadwood, S. J.; Sept. I), "95 Dear Jouiinal: This morning at 5:05 we embarked at Chadron on the Elkhorn for Hot Springs, S.I). There at S:25 a. m. we re-embarked for this place over the Burlington, arriving at 1:30 o'clock p. m. The trip was a most delightful one, over prairie, through "canyon," gorge and glade. The scenery from Buffalo Gsp to Deadwood, is most picturesque; it even approaches the magniOcent in nature. On either side of the railway route luckbound and pine-covered miniature mountains tower in beauteous and majestic grand eur. Nature, ever prodigal in display ing her bounteous charms, here lor centuries had concealed her grandest scenic mcttires. Here for centimes Nature's grandest solitudes remained undisturbed except by the wild cry and howl of the wildbeast. and the no less wild f 11 of the equally wild savage But Deadwood ! It's a misuon.er i he child was misnamed. A more ap propriate name in my judgment would be the4,Green Mountains of South Dakota." There is nothing in the surroundings to suggest the idea of "dead wood" any more than there is in the surroundings of Plattsmouth On all sides except the outlet and inlet for railway trains the city nestles, as it were, at the base of lofty pine and verdure-covered mountains, with here and there a white, rocky boulder perched on the summit, and standing, in imagery at least, like a lone senti nel cuardiujr below nature s vast green verdure, surrounding the cone shaped mountain. And there lor ages long before the white man disturbed these former vast solitudes with the axe. saw mill, the whistle ot the en gine, and the rumbling of machinery in smelting works and manufactories did these same silent sentinels of nature erown the mountain peak GCO feet above the present city of Dead wood ! Today, with Mrs. Hamsey and the children, we ascended Mt. Moriah at the east of the city. On this mount. 300 feet above the city, is located Deadwood's "city of the dead." Scripture names designate streets and avenues in the cemetery. We noticed among these names those of "Cavalry" and "Boaz." The cemetery is located on a slope of the mountain facing the city, and can be seen from Main street. In the cemetery have been erected many tine and costly monuments. Among those especially conspicuous is one to llev. Smith, a pioneer Method ist minister of the Black Hills, who was killed by the Indians a number of years ago, while in the performance ol his sacred duties, and the other is one erected to the memory of "Wild Bill." a noted Indian scout of pioneer days. It is said that "Wild Bill" was one of the most trustworthy and successful Indian scouts of pioneer days, an abso lute stranger to fear. The high esti mation in which he was held and his sterling qualities as man, Indian scout and brave pioneer of the Dakotas, at tracted the attention of "Buffalo Bill" who, in appreciation of these most commendable qualities, and in com memoration of his deeds, erected the monument to which I have re ferred, at his own expense. Two rail reads, the Burlington and Elkhorn, enter the city, and both connect with Hot Springs by means of "stub" trains the former leaving the main line at Minnekata, the latter at Buffalo Gap. Characteristic of its enterprise, the Burlington runs a narrow gauge from Deadwood to Lead City, four miles distant, and al30 to Spearfish, a dis tance of forty miles by rail. This line furnished tourists with convenient and cheap transportation to these noted places. Deadwood has an estimated population of 7,000 and the citizenship consists, principally, oi iormer resi dents of eastern and middle states, and are an energetic and progressive people. Its elevation is 4.539 " feet above sea level, being about 3,550 feet higher than Plattsmouth and tabout 3,500 feet higher than Omaha. There are many Gne and costly resi dences, with a style of architecture and beauty of grounds that would do credit to an eastern city. Many church buildings, built of brick, large and handsome, indicate that on each re curring Sabbath morning, the chimes of the church tells awake echoes in the "canyons" and summon the good peo ple to the worship of the G reat Creator of all these picturesque, grand and beautiful scenes of Nature. O'Brien, of the state fisheries at South Bend, was in town last even ing. Sol. V. Pitcher of llushville is In town shaking hands with his many old friends in this vicinity. The will of the late James Mosley, of Weeping Water, was filed for probate in county court Tuesday. Mrs. Laura Iteasoner (nee Hobson) of Glenwood was over visiting with her sister over Sunday. Ed. l'arrott, a former resident of this city, came up from Auburn Fri day with a load of peaches. Mrs. Silas Patterson returned to South Bend last Tuesday, after a visit in this city with relatives. Miss Carrie Ilolloway departed last Saturday for Meade, Saunders county where she will teach school the coin ing term. Judge Bamsey and family returned home last evening from a delightful visit of two weeks at Chadron and other northwestern points. S. T. Van Horn has purchased a half-interest in the barber shop he le cently told to Simmons & Wooster, where he will hereafter be found. L. K. Skinner came down from Lin coln Saturday evening to accompany home his family, who have been visit ing relatives in the city for the past week. A little seven-year-old son of Alex ander Keil, residing south of Cedar Creek, died Sunday and was buried at Oak Hill cemetery, this city, Mon day morning. Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Prosser of Ot tumwa, Iowa, arrived in town Tues day, and completely surprised thr gentleman's brother-in-law, S. P. Ilol loway and family. Mrs. John Donelau and baby ar rived in town yesterdayafternoon from Weeping Water and will visit for a few days with the former's mother. Mrs. A. W. White. Louis Vallery, who is employed in the general offices of the "('" at Chi cago, returned to his labors last even ing after a few days' visit with his parents in this city. Chas. Yoelke, the young man who has been "doing time" at the county jail since August 19th, for stealing a boat, was released this morning, hav ing "laid out" his fine and costs. Cha3. C. Parmele, as receiver of the Citizen's bank, has filed a suit in dis- court against Wm. Weber et al., to forclose a mortgage given to the bank by the defendants. Jacob Kepple, the genial wagon- maker, is the proudest man in town today. II is wife presented him with a fine little daughter Monday morning, the first in thirteen years. Mrs. Chas. Vroman of this city has entered her handsome six-months-old baby at the state fair baby show and her friends feel confident of its ability to capture one of the prizes. Mrs. Iv. White of Kenosha departed Monday morning for a fortnight's visit among old friends in Livingston and Buchanan counties, Mo., where she lived during the years of her girlhood. Jack Denson yesterday received a postal card from Sheriff Kikenbary, who is now in Greenwood, stating that the men arrested in Omaha were not the parties who robbed the stores at Greenwood. Mrs. W. II. Johnson has traded her residence property on South Fifth street to W. G. Keefer for that gentle man's Wahoo property. Mrs. John son and family expect to remove to Wahoo next week. Justice Archer has decided the case of J. F. Hinshaw vs. John O'Brien in favor of plaintiff in the sum of $22.70. The suit was brouget to col- ect rent for a house owned by Hin shaw out at Greenwood. George Young, county commissioner from the second district, brought in a dozen or more apples the other day of the "Pound Sweet" variety. Forcuri osity they were weighed and found to average a goou round pound apiece so that they are known to be true to name in fact. The nobbiest line of fall neckwear at Joe & Frank's just arrived. The Turnverein society will give a grand ball and turning exhibition at Waterman hall on the evening of Sept. 14.
