Although Carleton was making pilgrimage to the penitentiary for life, he was apparently as happy as a lark, believing a life sentence pre ferable to being hanged by the neck until rfparl and naviniT the COBtS of UUI K " prosecution. He intimated as much to persons on the train with whom he chatted gaily. The demeanor of Carle ton, who has just escaped death, was in contrast to that of Williams, the Fairbury murderer, who was received at the prison about the same time.
