The true valuation of the United
States in 1890, according to census bul
letin 379, was $05,037,091,197, of which
$39,554,333 represents real estate and
improvements thereon and $25,492,
546,8G4 personal property, including
railroads, mines and quarries. The
livestock on farms, farm Implements
and machinery stand for $2,703 015,040;
mines and quarries, $1,291 ,291, 579; gold
and silver coin and bullion, f 1,158,774,
948; machinery of mills and product,
$3,058,593,441; railroads and equipment,
including stre t railroads, $3,6S5,407,
323; telegraphs, telephones, shipping
and canals,$701,755,712; miscellaneous,
$7,S93,703,S21.
These figures are instructive in re
gard to certain matters now under dis
cussion, the tariff, bimetallism, etc.
The manufacturing interest, which
makes so much noise and perverts our
tariffs in a spirit of greed, only amounts
to about one-eighth of our total inter
ests, including unprotected along with
the small number of our protected in
dustries. The value of the farms of
the country, according to bulletin 378,
was $ 134279 .252,649. Adding the value
of farm implements and machinery,
$4944247,467. and live stock, $2,208,
767 ,573, we find the total far mi i g in
terest in 1S90 was over 516,000,000 000,
or about twice the whole manufactur
ing interest.
Taking S16,000,000,000 as indicating
roughly the capital invested by farmers
in tbair industry, it is interesting to
note that the total value of farm pro
ducts in 1S90 was but $2,460,107,454,
while the $6,138,716,604 invested in
manufactures produced products valued
at $9,054,535,337. The farmers, it thus
appears, on a capital nearly three
times that ef the manufacturers, get a
product worth under one-third of that
of the manufacturer. The dispropor
tion is excessive. The profits of the
manufacturer may not be what he
would like them, but they are vastly
larger than the farmer's and the
manufacturer can no longer decently
ask the farmer to "protect" him.
Ex-Sfeakek Reed was fairly and
parlimentarily flattened beyond recog
nition in the house Wednesday. No
more discomfited leader ever collapsed
in that body. His assertion that Ding
ley had addressed the chair before the
beginning of the roll-call and bis sub
sequent contention that if Dingley had
not addressed the chair he was ready
to address the chair, was almost as
pitiable as it was amusing. For once
Mr. Reed lost his head, and the more he
attempted to recover it the more
"rattled'' be became.
The United States senate demands
expedition in others, but reserves
eternity for its own actirn. It has
passed a resolution calling upon Secre
tary Morton to furnish, within three
days, certain information which it
sought of him six weeks ago. Now, if
it will pass a resolution calling upon it
self to take, within three weeks, action
upon the tariff which the country in
structed it to take a year and a half
ago, it will at least assume a semblance
of consistency.

Some days ago Senator Manderson
introduced an amendment to increase
the limit of cost of construction of
buildings at Fort Crook, near Omaha,
Neb., from $500,000 to $750,000. The
former amount, which was the original
cost of the post, has been nearly ex
pended. It is expected that the new
Fort Omaha will cost, when completed,
nearly a million and a half of dollars,
and in order to secure the legal ex
penditure of this sum the limit of the
estimates must be increased by act of
congress. The committee on military
affairs have reported favorably upon
the amendment, which Senator Man
derson will now attempt to add to the
sundry civil bill.

A dispatch from Fremont in yester
day's World-Herald reads: "The
report that Mrs. J. W. Love had dird
with the same disease which carried
away her husband December 21, 1893,
proved erroneous. She was taken sick
one week ago with a severe pain in her
bead. Friday night there was an in
ternal hemorrhage and discbarge from
the ears, the pain increasing in se
verity until she became unconscious
yesterday tnornin,?. in which condi
tion she has since remained. Last
evening Dr. Bridges of Omaha held a
consultation with Drs. Smith and Mc
Donald, and pronounced the disease
cerebrospinal meningitis."
