Baxter Smith of this city will build the house, and he departed this afternoon to commence work. Somebody tore several of the deck planks off the wagon bridge at Louis ville last Thursday night, which de layed travel for a short while. The bridge was promptly repaired, bow ever, without calling on the county board to attend to the matter. The board of education met in regu lar session at the court house Monday and passed on the usual claims and accounts and discussed other matters relating to the schools. The board took no action on the matter of sus pensions, as no complaints were filed. Dr. Theodore P. Livingston and wife departed Monday afternoon for Philadelphia, IVnn., whether the for mer eoes to attend the Philadelphia Polyclinic for some weeks. During bis absence his brother. Young and family de parted last Friday for their new home near Firth. Nebraska, where they will reside on a farm. Mr. Young has been a foreman in the local B & M. machine shops for several years and his departure i3 much to be re gretted. Plattsmoutb people are strong in lung power, and they stand an ex cellent chance to exercise them freely within the next few days. A free ferry across the Missouri river at Plattsinouth is now an assured fact. This will have the effect of drawing considerable trade from the Iowa bottoms and is a commendable stroke of enterprize on the part of the business meu of our neighboring city, by whom the expense is borne. Ne hawka Register. Hon.R. B. Windham denies the re port that he will remove to Omaha. The recent transfer of several pieces of his realty, valued at $52,000 to Dr. Hart, of Omaha, in exchange for Om aha property, will not affect his resi dence here, as be has yet considerable real estate and other interests in this city. The result of the deal my pos sil.ly result in Dr. Hart's removal to this city. The Glen wood Tribune says: "The cheapest piece of land that has been sold in Mills county for some years was an 80 acres belonging to E R. S. Wood row in Lyons township, the purchase price being $100, or a little over $1 an acre. The land, which was sold to Catherine M. Fulton, lies on the bank of the Missouri river, and while in theory it is land in reality it is water since the land has all gone into the river except a few acres and this will probably go next summer. We do not know what Mrs. Fulton intends doing with her new purchase unless she in tends to convert it into a duck pond. The Modern Woodmen of this place initiate an applicant nearly every meeting night. Charley Beach has secured a position as postal clerk on the Edgemont & Sheridan road. A little child of Mr. and Mrs. Root died on Sunday and was buried at Elmwood on Mondav. J. II. Hall will build a new house on his place, adjoining the McCaig home stead, this spring, and try farming. Cassel departed for the county seat Sunday, to serve as jurors in the present term of court Our hotel has changed hands, Mr. G. W. Gilliard, of Deuel county, having purchased the property. Mr. G. will take charge of the business about the first of July. The wives, mothers and daughters of the members of the M. W. A. gave the neighbors a great purprise last Saturday night. During the meeting of the Woodmen the ladies gathered at the residence of S. Hulfish. and from there they marched to the Woodmen hall, loaded with meats, cakes, pies, pickles, etc. They succeeded in gain ing an entrance, set two tables and proceeded to have a good time, and they had one. To say the Woodmen were surprised does not express it; their eyes stuck out until you could have knocked them off with sticks, but the sight of the good things Boon re stored their courage, and th-onslaught on those tables was terrific. It was nearly midnight when the company dispersed, after having such a good time, and the Woodmen's surprise will long be remembered and will result in great good to the oider, which at this time is in a flourishing condition. From Omaha comes the following: It is whispered about in gambling circles that a project is on foot to es tablish a Monte Carlo at East Omaha similar to the world-famed institution at Monaco. A syndicate of wealthy gamblers, it is claimed, is to be formed with a view of locating, as near as they can get to Courtland beach, a four story brick structure, with a spacious interior, handsomely ' tiled, frescoed and decorated, large enough to accom modate a score or more green cloth tables. The site to be selected will be on the Iowa side, near the street car line. The building will have an annex, in which reading, smoking and concert rooms will be arranged. In an informal discussion of the scheme proposed the other night at a quiet gathering of several of the wealthy gamblers, the subject of the location of a first-class race track was also mentioned. The plan is to estab lish a first-class sporting headquarters upon a scale of splendor not equalled elsewhere in the country, and as the location would be outside the jurisdic tion of police authorities, arrange ments could be perfected for all sorts of sporting events.
