Miss Fitzgerald was awarded the first prize, and Mrs. Henry Ofe re ceived the second prize. A luncheon concluded the after noon pinochle playing. Garden Club Picnic The members of the Plattsmouth Garden club and their families staged a picnic at the John Larsh farm east of Union late yesterday afternoon. A. large group of members as well as two guests. Miss Anna Moravetz of Racine, Wisconsin and Mrs. Perry II. Murdick of Benton Harbor, Michi gan were present. The members arrived with well filled baskets and at 5 o'clock a steak fry was held. The picnic luncheon was the club's social event of the month. From Friday Dally Margaret Scotten Entertains The apartment of Miss Margaret Scotten In the Coronado apartments was the destination of the Delta Deck Bridge club members last eve ning. Miss Scotten served as the hostess and presented prizes to Mrs. Lora Lloyd Kieck, Mrs. L. W. Egen berger, and Mrs. Thomas Walling. At the close of the evening she served refreshments. Bridge club met for a special session last evening at the home of Mrs. Emmons Ptak at 1123 Pearl street. The special occasion was a party held in honor ,of Mrs. Ernest Shellenbarger, who is in Plattsmouth visiting her son, Claire Shellenbarger and fam ily and other friends and relatives. Mrs. Shellenbarger, who resides In Gillette, Wyoming, is a former mem ber of the club. The nine ladies present played bridge during the evening and prizes were awarded to Mrs. Frank Bestor, who received the first prize; Mrs. James Bulin, second; and Mrs. Em mons Ptak, the consolation. A guest prize was presented to Mrs. Shellenbarger. The party was concluded with a luncheon. Tendered Stork Shower Mrs. Theodore Ptak, Mrs. "Walter Tritsch, and Mrs. Herbert Schuetz entertained at a stork shower at the Coronado apartments last evening in honor of Mrs. V. V. Ryan. From Saturday's Dally Entertains Bridge Club Miss Marie Horn served as hostess to the. Friday afternoon bridge club at her home yesterday. Mrs. Guy Long, Mrs. Emmons Ptak, and Mrs. Rudolph Iverson were the guests present at the club. Mrs. Fred Sharpnack and Mrs. Newton Sullivan were the first and second prize winners, respectively. The hostess served a luncheon at the close of the party. Enioy Steak Fry The back yard of Dr. and Mrs. P. T. Heineman served as the appro priate place for the steak fry. en joyed by Mr. and Mrs. Louis Lohnes, Mr. and Mrs. Lowell S. Devoe, and Mrs. Edna Dalton of McCook, sister of Mrs. Lohnes. Following the 6 o'clock steak fry, the group enter tained themselves by visiting and served as onlookers as Dr. Heineman showed moving pictures of some of his recent trips. Missionary Society Meets The Home Missionary society of the First Methodist church met at the church parlors for a 1 o'clock covered dish luncheon Thursday. In cluded with a group of the members present was a large number of guests, who were present for the .society's first meeting of their fiscal year. Owing to the absence of the presi dent, Mrs. Edward Newton, the past president and present corresponding secretary, Mrs. Flora Arn, presided at the business session. Mrs. Pearl Mann had charge of the program and presented a map talk on home missions. It was a gen eral review of their homes and schools taken from the annual re port. Mrs. Mann cited the society's different kinds of work and where these homes and schools are located, and which are operated by the Wom en's Home Missionary society In con nection with the church. Tendered Shower Wednesday Mrs. Elvin C. Shryock was the guest of honor at a kitchen shower given her on Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 in ' the parlors of the First Christian church as Louisville. The shower the second one tendered her since her wedding on Monday, Aug ust 7 was given by Mrs. Elvera Price, Mrs. Chester Eager, and Mrs. Herbert Mason. A lunch consisting of Jello, cake, whipped cream, and coffee was served by the hostesses. 4-H NEWS The 4-H cooking club of Murray, held their fifth meeting August 15, 1939, at the home of Irvene Meisin ger. All members were present but one. Old and new business was dis cussed. All work was checked that had been accomplished this year. At the close of the meeting re freshments were served by the hos tess. v On August 23, 1939 the Happy Homemakers held their Achievement Day program at the home of Marlene Woodard. Marlene Woodard and Beverly Brubacher demonstrated the making of potato salad. Menus were Judged by members. The afternoon closed with the hostess serving lunch. GLUT HAMBURGER MARKET from Friday tmrty Last evening operators of the retail hamburger places over the city. where luscious hamburgers, famous from Don Norman's to the Wagon Wheel, are prepared, received calls for hurried up orders of from ten to a dozen of the hamburgers. The toothsome burgers, fit to tempt the appetite 'of Wimpy, were prepared and the prospective customer await ed, but he came not. If the Identi fication of the party is learned it Is probable that they' will have to eat a large array of hamburgers and like it. ATTEND ELMWOOD FESTIVAL Friday the members of the Amer ican Legion Junior drum and bugle corps were at Elmwood where they assisted in the program of the eve ning and made a decided hit with their snappy drills and musical numbers. The King Korn float, newly re decorated and In snappy shape for the fall season was also taken to Elm- wood to add its part to the colorful features of the fiftieth anniversary of the town. WILL VISIT IN WEST From Thursday's Dally Mr. and Mrs. L. L. McCarty are leaving at the week end for a short visit in the west, going from here to Westervirie, Nebraska, with their daughter, Anna Margaret, who is to teach at that place the coming term. Mr. and Mrs. McCarty will then go on to Sheridan, Wyoming, where they will visit at the home of Ben McCarty, brother of Mr. McCarty and enjoy many of the Interesting places in that section of Wyoming. HENRICKSENS HAVE GUESTS Thursday guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Henricksen, Sr. were Mrs. L. L. Jipp of Fort Cal houn and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wilders also of Fort Calhoun. Mrs. Jlpp, mother of Mrs. Henricksen, is eighty-nine years of age. Mrs. Wilders is a niece of Mrs. Henrick sen and a cousin of Miss Wilhelmina Henricksen and William Henricksen; Jr. VISIT RELATIVES HERE Mr. and Mrs. Harold Murphey and daughter, Vesta Lee, of Lincoln, were here Wednesday to spend the day at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William A. Robertson, parents of Mrs. Mur phey. The Murphey family are en route home from a 'pleasant visit at Cleveland, Ohio, with relatives and friends. VISITS WITH PARENTS Herbert Sundstrom of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Is here to enjoy a 3hort visit with his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Sundstrom and the old friends as well as at Louisville and Lincoln. Herbert and his brother, Clement have been making their home In the east for the past year. Death of Mrs. Henry Zuckweiler in South Dakota Resident Here for Great Many Years and Well Known Over .Com munity, Passes Away. Mrs. Henry Zuckweiler, 65, for many years a resident of Platte-1 mouth, died Thursday at her home at Miller, South Dakota, after a short Illness and is to be brought back to this city where funeral services will be held on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Sattler funeral home at Fourth and Vine streets. Mrs. Zuckweiler made her home here for' a great many years, Mr. Zuckweiler being engaged in busi ness here for many years in the firm of Zuckweiler & Lutz, he being as sociated with E. P. Lutz, brother of Mrs. Zuckweiler. The family moved to South Dakota some twenty years ago and were engaged in farming. Mr. Zuckweiler has preceded his wife in death. Mrs. Zuckweiler is survived by her only son, Dewey Zuckweiler. of Mill er, five brothers, Edward P., John and and Mike Lutz of thin city, George Lutz of Louisville and Fred Lutz of Murray, one sister, Mrs. Paul Roesner, Lincoln. There are also sur viving four grandsons and a large number of nephews and nieces. ELMWOOD STARTS FESTIVAL From Thursday's Dally This week the village of Elmwood is observing their fiftieth anniver sary as an incorporated community and a very fine festival and carnival is being held which opened Wednes day. There was a very fine crowd pres ent last evening to attend the fine program that had been arranged by the enterprising committee in charge. Sheriff Joe Mrasek and Deputy Sheriff Emery Doody were present at the festival last evening and re port a fine time by all of the large crowd and the very best of order was evidenced. VISITS AT LINCOLN From Thursday' Dafty- Searl S. Davis was at Lincoln today where he was called to look after some matters of business and while there enjoyed a visit at the home of his mother, Mrs. Mary M. Davis, as well as with a number of the old friends. RETURN TO IOWA From Friday's Daily- Mrs. W. F. Huneke and children, Clyde and Evelyn, who have been visiting here this week with the old friends, departed this morning for their home at Burlington, Iowa, after a most deliehtful outing. While here they were house guests of Mi and Mrs. William L. Heinrich. PARENTS OF DAUGHTER Tuesday. The Gochenours are residents of Nebraska City and the mother was the former Miss Ruby Sheldon. RETURNS FROM MISSOURI Mrs. Clayton A. Rosencrans, who has been visiting at the home of her parents near Honniwell, Missouri, has returned home. She had a very delightful time and found the condi tions in that section of Missouri as very fine and good crops anticipated. Three bantams have entered, two lightweights and two middleweights also agreed to do bat tle on the platform. Some of the youngsters who want ed to try for local fistic honors are unable to enter, because of family objections and had to withdraw ther entries. Former Champion Kid Graves is still looking for seven en tries in one weight division to fill out a full card for the boxing pro gram. Any and all amateurs In Platts mouth, who are desirous of gaining laurels in fisticuffs are urged to see promoter Graves or leave their entry at the Journal office. Graves is en deavoring to arrange a special attrac tion in the boxing line and if he can arrange it, will announce a spec ial boxing feature to go along with the amateur bouts. FAIR BOOSTERS HERE From Friday's Dally This morning with the sounding of horns, the clanging of bells, a motor caravan arrived in the city on a county wide boosting trip to ad vertise the county fair at Weeping Water on September 12, 13, 14 and 15. The party brought a large num ber of the enthusiastic boosters for the fair which has proven one of the very best in the state of Nebraska down through the year, this year promising even a greater success. The group was headed by Presi dent Henry Ragoss of the fair asso ciation, Frank Woods, secretary, and Mayor Troy L. Davis of Weeping Water. The Weeping Water band under the direction of Dr. L. N. Kunkel gave several numbers and the com mittee extended the invitation to the !ocal people to come to the fair and enjoy seeing the fine exhibits that await them. MISSOURI VISITORS HERE The home of Mr. and Mrs. Alois Smetana on North 14th street, is the scene of a very pleasant family party over the week end as their children are here from out of the city to visit them. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Smetana and daughter, Jean, of Sedalia, Missouri and Mr. and Mrs. Louis Smetana and son. Gene, of St. Louis are stopping here for a few days. They arrived here from the west coast where they have been en joying a motor trip over the "west and have covered some 7,000 miles which has taken them through seven teen states. ANTON SVOBODA RECOVERING Anton Svoboda, who some time ago fell and broke his hip, is showing splendid improvement at his home at 1514 Granite street despite his ad vanced years. Mr. Svoboda was placed in a wheel chair and is ably taken care of by other members of the family. His daughter, Mrs. Marie Roessler is here from Chicago taking care of the father. Her sister. Mrs. Robert Throckmorton of Denver, who has been here several weeks, return ed to her home. HERE FROM CALIFORNIA Mr nnd Mrs. Tom Rvland of San Diego.
