School Affairs
The County Superintendent of
Schools filed a certificate for Free
High School Levy for the year 1939
40. certifying that the sum of $28,
30.00 is necessary to pay High
S' hool Tuition for 350 qualified pu
rils. As the valuation on which the
High School Tuition levy is based
was not available, the levy could
not be made by the County Board and
was left to be certified later by the
County Superintendent of Schools as
provided by law.
The annual report of the Teach
ers Institute fund for the period
1938-39 was filed by the County Su
perintendent of Schools, reporting a
balance on hand of $72.55.

JUDGE REEKER TO SPEAK
AT AUXILIARY CONVENTION
Judge Ernest L. flecker, of Madi
son county, is to speak at the Child
Welfare breakfast held in conjunc
tion with the American Legion Aux
iliary convention at Lincoln. The
convention dates, like those of the
Legion, are August 27-28-29. The
breakfast for unit Child Welfare
chairmen and other delegates desir
ing to attend will be held Monday
morning, August 28, at 7:30 at the
Cornhusker, which is Auxiliary head
quarters during the convention. The
Legion is holding forth at the Hotel
Lincoln.
Judge Reeker is a well known au
thority on children's problems and at
the present time is writing a series
of case histories for the Journal un
der the title "Children at the Cross
roads," which is eliciting much fav
orable comment from among our
readers.
The Child Welfare breakfasts, us
ually an occasion for disseminating
statistics, this year should prove in
teresting and informative with such
an enlightening speaker as the "Kids'
Judge" from Madison county espec
ially if his discourse is as touching
as some of the case histories from
his pen appearing in the Daily Jour
nal on Saturdays and the Semi
Weekly Journal on Mondays.
RECEIVES FINE PROMOTION
Mr. and Mrs.' Charles Howard have
returned home from Newman Grove,
Nebraska, where they have been visit
ing at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Lee Myers, the latter formerly Miss
Jeanne Ray, both being former teach
ers In the Plattsmouth school sys
tem. Mr. Myers has been music Instruc
tor in the school at Newman Grove
Tor the past year but has been elect
ed to the music department of the
Norfolk city schools, one of the larg
est in the state. Mr. Meyers made a
fine record while in the Plattsmouth
schools and the former friends and
students will be pleased to learn
that he -as received such a fine
recognition.

'STITCH IN TIME 4-H CLUB
HOLDS ACHIEVEMENT DAY
In the afternoon of August 16,
1939, the members of the "Stitch
in Time" sewing club, their mothers
and a few guests met at the home of
Miss Evelyn Wolph for their achieve
ment program.
Out of the 22 members, only one.
Bonnie McVey, was absent.
The afternoon program started
out with a demonstration. "Closets
Where None Were Before." given
by Orlah Kuntz and Doris Anderson.
These girls will represent Cass coun
ty at the state fair with a girl's
room demonstration.
The next part of the program was
also a demonstration, "Using Can
ned Chicken in Emergencies." The
demonstrators were Margie Tollard
and Marie Anderson. These girls
are also representing Cass county
as a canning demonstration.
