f - A. ffLATTSMOUTH SEMI - WEEKLY JOURNAL MONDAY, MAY 15, 1939. page foub Twenty Years of Extension Work in County National Organization Started When President Wilson Signed the Smith-Lever Act. Monday, May 8th marked the 25th anniversary of the Inauguration ol extension work on a federal basis. It was on that date in 1914 that the president of the United States signed the Smith-Lever act providing federal support of cooperative agricultural extension work. The purpose of the work was defined as, "the giving of Instruction and practical demonstra tions in agriculture and home eco nomics to persons not attending . . . colleges in the several communities and imparting . . k information . . . through field demonstrations, publi cations and otherwise." Extension work, was, however, horn out of the counties long before that time and grew into state and national prominence it was not handed down full grown for the fed eral government. With the inauguration of the Cass County Farm Bureau in April 1918, an organization working for the in terest and advancement of agricul ture and farm homemaking in the county, was Bet up by a group of far sighted men who realized the need for better cooperation among farmers and the relative need for strong lead ership and help with their agricul tural problems. Instrumental in completing the or ganization were such men as Chas. Noyes, Louisville; Searl Davis, Platts mouth; V. II. Banning, Union; Bucephalus Wolph, Nehawka;and Raymond Pollard, Nehawka. L. R. Snipes was chosen as the first county agent serving in this capacity until 1939. This year marks the twentieth birthday of agricultural extension work in Cass county. Throughout these years the efforts of the Farm Bureau have been directed toward two main goals: To help farmers earn more real income; and to help make the farm a better place to live. In modern agricultural education, there are two essentials. New truths must be discovered. But even the greatest truth; is worthless-if it lies unused in a dusty file. New facts and old alike must be harnessed into practical, every day work on farms throughout the state. The Extension Service endeavors to reach (children too young to attend college; men and women who have neither the time nor opportunity to attend regular classes, and graduates or former students who are eager to keep abreast of new developments lest their knowledge should grow rusty.
