Funeral of Grandma Turner
Mrs. John Turner, Sr., nee Ann
Mathilda Squires, who was affection
ately known to everyone in the com
munity, passed away last Saturday,
April 29, at the home of her son,
James L. Turner. She suffered a fall
some time ago that resulted in a
fractured hip, which kept her bed
fast. Born in Barbour county, Vir
ginia, January 17, 1844, she was 95
years, 3 months and 12 days old at
the time of her death.
With her parents, Nehemiah and
Olive Fortney Squires, who were na
tives of Virginia, she moved when 12
year3 of age to Davis county, Iowa.
Seven years later in 1863, the family
moved to Lineville, Iowa.
November 22, 1866, at Grandville,
Mahaska county, Iowa, she became
the bride of John Turner, an indus
trious young farmer. After farming
there for four years, they came to
Nebraska in 1870 and settled on a
homestead near Ashland. Two years
later, they disposed of the homestead
and bought a farm near Elmwood,
onto which they moved in the spring
of 1872, where they lived the rest of
their lives.
.Four children blessed this union,
one dying in infancy. - The three sur
viving are Oscar S., Melvin T. and
James L. There also remain thirteen
grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren
and one great-great-grandchild;
a sister, Mrs. Olive Horton, of
Glen wood,. Mo., and 'two half broth
ers, Charles and Ben Squires, also of
Glen wood, Mo. Her husband died
September 2, 1918.
At the age of twelve, Mrs. Turn
er was converted, and throughout
the years continued to live a devoted
Christian life. She was a member of
the Methodist church and an active
worker, devoted to the precepts of
her religion. In early days before a
church was available, she and Mr.
Turner were charter members of the
group that held religious services
regularly in the Center school house.
Later they Joined with Philander
Williams and Chauncey Bailey in a
church building project, completing
the erection of the edifice in the
spring of 1887.
Funeral services were held Mon
day afternoon from the Methodist
church, and the. large auditorium
was filled to capacity by relatives and
long time friends of the deceased,
who came to pay their last tribute
of respect. The pastor, Rev. Fintel,
conducted the service and interment
was in the Elmwood cemetery be
side the body of her husband.
During the services, Mesdames
Helen Schneider of Elmwood and
Cora Reeder of Plattsmouth sang a
number of the old familiar hymns
that Grandma Turner loved so well.
Mrs. Guy Clements presided at the
pipe organ.
By her kindness Grandma Turner
endeared herself to the members of
her family and a large circle of ac
quaintances, who will miss her a
great deal. Like a sheaf of ripened
grain, her life has been filled with
good deeds, and now she has been
gathered to her home in heaven to
enjoy a well earned rest from life's
cares with the angels of God. Sixty
seven years of actively representing
the Master and his cause in this
community have certainly qualified
her to enter into the joys of that last
long, peaceful rest.

ENDORSES MUSIC WEEK
The White House, WTash.,
March 20, 1939.
My dear Mr. Tremaine:
I think we should welcome every
undertaking which makes the public
more keenly alive to the available
resources in musical talent in local
communities and the means by which
such talent when discovered may be
developed and utilized. I believe the
observance of National Music Week
can add immensely in thus arousing
community interest in music.
Th3 homes and schools can do
much to develop an appreciation of
eood music among the children by
furnishing opportunities for the boys
and girls to listen to music which
has cultural value and to learn some
of the skills by which they may re
produce or create music that has real
merit.
Through schools, churches, clubs,
and neighborhood groups, much
pleasure can be derived by the or
ganization, of choruses', orchestras
and bands, and in addition, the in
terests and activities of thousands
of youth and adults will be guided
into constructive channels.
I believe that this Is an Important
and vital movement and I urge all
communities to give hearty support
to the observance of National Music
Week, May 7-13, 1939.
Very sincerely yours,
FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT.
