PAGE FOITB, Wide Range of Awards at Court of Honor Everything from Eagle Palms Down Included Eight Troops Rep resented by 33 Boys. Bill Hula. Member of Arbor Lodge Scout Press Club The entire range of awards from Eagle Palms down to Second class Scout were included in the presenta tions made at last night's Arbor Lodge district court of honor held at the high school auditorium here. There were eight for Second class, five for First class, four for Star, two for Life, one for Eagle and one for Eagle Palm. Eight troops three from Nebras ka City and one each from Auburn, Dunbar, Peru, Plattsmouth and Ne hawka furnished 33 candidates for merit badges and advancement in rank. It is seldom a court of honor pro vides so complete and varied a list of awards as did this one. The board of review and exami nation got off to a slow start, and it was past S:30 when the court cere monies began. E. II. Wescott, J. A. Capwell and Fred Lugsch of the local troop com mittee, and Searl S. Davis and L. S. Devoe assisted the examining board in the absence of advancement di rectors from a number of the troop committees. Plattsmouth troop was represent ed by four boys. One of these, Ray mond Evers, received advancement to the rank of First class Scout. The four and the merit badges they re ceived were: Bible School Sunday, May 7th "Paul Works a Hard Field" i Acts 18:1, 4-11; I Cor. 2:1-5. The material for our lesson is so vast that we can only briefly men tion the main incidents, leaving the details to the teacher, raul was driven from every city he had vis ited so far, leaving the seed planted for God to bring it to fruition. Leaving Silas and Timothy at Berea, he passes on to Athens, there to await the coming of his co-workers. Finding a Jewish synagogue, he takes in the city and observes their religion, altars and shrines every where to all the "known Gods" and to make sure none are overlooked, an altart o the "unknown gods" was built. This gave Paul the text for that matchless sermon recorded in Chap. 17, which he preached on Mars hill, in which we note an absence of the doctrine of redemption. His appeal was rather to the reason than to the conscience. Yet the address was of the highest value, because it presented aspects of truth which were to be of fun damental importance in the coming conflict between Christianity and pageanism. The result, however, was disappointing one Areopagite was converted (Dionysius), a woman Damaris and some others were touch ed but no church was ever found ed in this city. Why not? Were they too highly educated? Is education a barrier to religion? It seemed foolishness to the Greeks (I Cor. 1:22, 23). But left with them this parting word that they can be saved by repentance and faith in Christ; they can not claim ignor ance because he (Paul) had told them the way; and some time they will meet this Christ as their judge (which not many today realize). Why is Jesus appointed to judge the world? . . . Because as man he knows man's trials and temptations and can have compassion; as God he will not make a mistake, but will be just in meeting out to all their just dues. No persecution in Athens, but something worse ridicule and indif ference. Not waiting any longer at Athens for Silas and Timothy, Paul starts for Corinth. His second mis sionary tour, described in Acts 15:36 and 18:22 is drawing to the end, with eighteen months of labor in this great metropolis of some 200, 000 free inhabitants and '250,000 slaves. A great field to work in. "Into this center of commerce, shrine of art, vortex of iniquity, Paul came in the autumn of A. D. 50." James Strahan. How long he had been in Corinth before he met Aquila and Priscilla we do not know, nor do Ve know wtiether they were Christians or not Corbin Davis Pathflnding, Per sonal Health and Scholarship. Raymond Evers Bookbinding. Lars Larson Civics and Fireman ship. Barnes Webb Bird Study, Camp ing, Lifesaving, Pathflnding, Pio neering and Salesmanship. Searl S. Davis presented the Platts mouth Scouts with their awards. Herbert Helms of Auburn receiv ed the coveted Eagle award in a most impressive ceremony that In corporated for the first time in Ar bor Lodge district Scouting, the re turn presentation of a miniature Eagle badge by the boy to his moth er after she had pinned the regular Eagle badge of Scouting on her son's uniform. Both the father and moth er were on the stage with their son. Presentation was made by E. II. "Wes cott, vice president of Arbor Lodge district, who acted as chairman of the meeting. Willis V. Elliott, field executive in this area, was here to act as secretary of the meeting. Bill Rosencrans, Plattsmouth boy now attending the University of Ne braska, was scheduled to receive the Eagle award, but was unable to be present and will receive it at a later court, either in this district or at Lincoln. At the conclusion of the court of honor ceremonies, E. J. Weyrich showed several reels of motion pic tures taken by himself on western and other trips. They were largely in natural color and much enjoyed by the boys and adults piesent at the court of honor. Camporee Early in June Attention was called to the dis trict camporee to be held here early in June, at Camp Wheeler, local Scout camp. This will be similar to last year's and include an over night camp, after the boys hike in from the disembarkation point at the Murray corner. Lesson Study! By L. Neitzel, Murdock, Neb. before they met Paul. These two Jews had been banished from Rome by an edict of Claudius Jews have been on the go ever since the de struction of Jerusalem and the na tion, A. D. 70. The present perse cution is nothing new. Paul became very intimate with these good people, because they worked at the same trade with Paul and their home was the place of Paul's preaching. This made Paul's long stay in Corinth possible. In the first place Paul appealed to their reason, both to Jews and Greeks. If the Christian religion cannot satisfy reason, it cannot be believed. God will reason with man. (Isa. 1: 18; 43:26; Rom. 12:1). In the sec ond place, Paul related his experi ence in testimony, that Jesus was the Christ, in showing what Christ can do in making a man over. The result is invariably the same either men accept the word of testimony or they reject it. As Paul had preached the whole counsel of God, holding nothing back he could say, "I am clean!" You have sealed your doom in rejecting the only way of escape. It is man's own choice when he goes to hell. The attitude of the Jews caused Paul some apprehension and anxiety. To allay his fears God visited him and gave him the assurance of his divine presence, and that he would suffer no bodily injury. Faul must have thought of form er beatings and stormings; his back was scarcely healed until another scourging opened up the old wounds. What a blessed assurance of divine help. Then follows the Joy of the coming of Silas and Timothy. Now he grew more bold and success crowned their efforts. Later Paul rehearses his entrance and labors in Corinth, in his Epistles to this church. In these five verses, Paul gives us the secret of effectual preaching and the building of the church upon enduring foundation. "Christ and him crucified ... in demonstration of the spirit and the power." The preaching and teaching in our Sunday school of this theme will make the church again a power in the world, where man will seek God and his salvation with real and penitent tears and wrestle with God until they obtain the victory. (See Gen. 32:24-31). So men prayed through in former days. Such were the converts of Paul's time. Were the people in those days greater sin ners than they are today? When has the standard been changed? Sin is as red as crimson today and only the blood of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, can cleanse the leper's spot and wash us clean. Read prayerfully Rev. 7:13-17. Paul worked a hard field, but God gave him the victory.- MERCHANTS WIN OPENER The Plattsmouth Merchants open ed their season Sunday by trouncing the Four Mile nin 28-9. "Stub" Sedlak and Les Thimgan did the twirling for the winners and looked very impressive, giving nine hits between them. The Merchants battered four visiting pitchers for 28 runs on 19 hits. The big inning was the third when the Platters scored 7 runs and included a home run wallop by Jack O'Donnell, fast local outfielder. Joe Phillips was the leading stick er, having four hits for six trips, while "Chuck" Ault and O'Donnell had three apiece. Every regular got at least one safety. Box score: Merchants AB R II E E.
