MONDAY, MAY 1, 1939. PAGE FOUR PLATTSMOTJTH SEMI - WEEKLY JOTTBNAL Burlington Started Here in the Year 1869 Plans of Government for Expansion of Iowa Road Held Up by Civil War was Resumed Here. The Burlington railroad seventy years ago in July started active work on the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad in Nebraska, by which name the system from Plattsmouth to Den ver was known for a great many years. With the gradual opening of the great western plains states and the fast losing struggle of the Indians with the whites, the government was faced with the necessity of railroad connections that would closer bind the more populous east with the new country where settlers soon were to seek homes. The federal government in 1862 as a move to overcome the dangers of secession of California where there was much southern sympathy, au thorized the construction of the Cen tral and Union Pacific railroads that came year and in July 1864 the gov ernment invited the Burlington rail road in Iowa, to build 200 miles of line in Nebraska, as far west as Fort Kearney, this to furnish an east ern outlet to the Union Pacific. The government offered as an in ducement 2,373,150 acres of land along the line of the proposed Bur lington, land that the government had not been able to dispose of or to find purchasers for. Due to the civil war, railroad work in the Avest was checked and the Burlington in Iowa was unable to proceed with the plans of further ex pansion to the west. The line to Pacific Junction was completed in 1869 and in May, 1869 the Burling ton & Missouri River Railroad in Nebraska was extended to the Mis souri river and ferry service pro vided to Plattsmouth where in July 1S69 the first dirt was turned on making the line to the west that was to form a part of the great trans continental systems. From this city westward the line of the railroad had been laid out by Thomas Doane, construction engi neer, who later was to be the foun der of- Doane college at Cete. Led by John Fitzgerald, the contractor, a force of hard working and hard fisted Irish railroaders took up the task of placing across the South Platte -country of Nebraska a line that was to reach the city of Denver, but only after years of hard work and privation and danger to the con struction gangs from the still numer ous Indians. The line to Kearney from Plattsmouth was completed in 1S72.
