Mrs. Marcia Hise and Mrs. Louis
Wright entertained the Dorcas so
ciety Friday aftersoon at the church.
Mrs. John Armstrong and Mrs.
Charles Armstrong returned Tuesday
from a week's visit with relatives at
Gordon.
Miss Ruth Harmon gave a show
er Tuesday afternoon at the Chris
tian church, honoring her friend,
Mrs. Ruby Jeffry.
Word was received that Mr. and
Mrs. Clyde Hughes are the proud
parents of a baby boy. Clyde was
a former barber in Greenwood be
fore moving to Texas last fall.
Mrs. Lessie Pilford, 53, mother of
Mrs. Roy Comstock, passed away at
her home in Ashland last Sunday.
Funeral services were held at the
Christian church in Ashland Tues
day afternoon. Burial was in the
Ashland cemetery.
George Walling, a former Green
wood citizen, now residing in Lin
coln, visited old friends here last
Wednesday and was a guest at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred W. Eth
erege. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bingham, of,
Omaha, cousins of Mrs. Fred ,W.
Etherege, were guests for the day at
the Etherege home in Greenwood,
driving down from their home in the
metropolis, and were accompanied by
Mr. and Mrs. Bert Allen, also ol
Omaha.
Greenwood on Lincoln Exchange
All Greenwood telephones were
put on the Lincoln exchange Tues
day, giving the patrons the privilege
of a wider territory. All new dial
telephones replace the old ones. Miss
Margaret Holka, who has been chief
operator, and her sister, Miss Mamie
Holka. were placed in charge of the
erchange at Ceresco, moving there
Thursday.
Senior Class Play
The Senior class presented "Hul
laballoo" in the auditorium Friday
night to a good crowd. This was a
three act comedy and well played by
the members of the class. Music was
furnished by the H. S. orchestra-un-der
the direction of Miss Ruth Mc
Kinney. Jack Headley sang two
numbers, accompanied by Miss Iona
May.
The classes of 1938 and 1939 pre
sented the High School with a set
of drums for the orchestra and a gift
was given to Prof. W. E. Dyer from
the Senior class this year for his
work in coaching their play.
Suffered Broken Ann
While Howard Landon, 12-year
old son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Lan
don and grandson of Mr. and Mrs.
Emmett Landon, was about the
chores and had entered a stall in the
cow barn to do the milking, he suf
fered the fracture of one of his arms.
Howard had prodded one of the cows
to make it get over, and in doing so
it crowded into another cow that
lunged back and threw the young
man against the side of the stall.
A doctor reduced the fracture and
Howard is getting along as well as
can be expected, although suffering
a great deal from his injuries.
Continuing Poultry Business
Since the passing of the late W. H
Leesley, the family, under the direc
tion of Mrs. Leesley, has continued
the business and are hatching, grow
ing and selling a large number of
chickens. They have a large lot that
are now up to broiler size and are
finding a ready demand for them.
All told they have over 4,000 and
this last week shipped 250 to a buyer
in the northwestern part of the state.
AVOCA NEWS
Elmer Hallstrom transacted busi
ness for the bank in Plattsmouth on
Tuesday.
Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Lum of Ver
don were dinner guests of Monte Lum
on Easter day.
H. M. Lum was called to Lincoln
Monday of last week, where he had
some business matters to look after.
Wm. Maseman was a visitor in
Omaha last Saturday, going after a
washing machine which he had dis
posed of to a customer.
Louis Hoback, who resides north
of Avoca purchased a new washer as
a birthday present to his wife, the
machine being delivered last Satur
day. Mr. and Mrs. Frances Marquardt
of Lincoln were spending their Eas
ter vacation in Avoca visiting with
friends and were guests at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Marquardt
during their stay.
Mrs. Anna Meyer entertained for
Easter, having as her guests her two
daughters. Miss Clara Meyers and
Mrs. Ella Barker and the latter's
two daughters. Misses Anna and
Doloris, all of Malcolm.
Fred Marquardt marketed 17 head
of fine hogs at Nebraska City last
week, for which he received a very
satisfactory price. He still has a
greater number on feed, which will
be ready to market a little later.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Marquardt
entertained on Easter day their re
spective mothers, Mrs. Bedella Stan-
der, mother of Mrs. Marquardt, and
Mrs. Caroline Marquardt, mother of
Fred.
Mrs. Edna Miller and her brother.
Claude Durham, of Purdue, Wyom
ing, arrived in Avoca last week for
a short visit with their mother, Mrs.
Florine Durham. Mrs. Miller also
went to Sioux City to visit with a
sister, and en route home will stop
here again.
M. H. Lum, the lumberman, has
just added to his jungle the follow
ing plants, shrubs and trees: 150
choke cherries; one Linder tree; six
lundonberries, IS silver maples, 25
Chinese elms. 100 willow trees, 15
wild plums and 25 filberts.
Stuart Maseman, Roy Ruhge and
Charles Stutt, members of the Senior
class of the Avoca high school, gave
a very pleasant and delightful six
o'clock dinner at the Harry Stutt
home last Monday evening, when they
entertained the other members of the
class'and members of the faculty. All
report a fine time.
Large Attendance
The Easter service at the Congre
gational church in Avoca was well
attended, in fact the number attend
ing was so large that many stood in
the aisles and others had to remain
out of doors. This speaks well for
the interest in church services and
the inclination on the part of many
to observe Easter day by attending
church services.
Undergoes Operation
John Marquardt, who suffered an
injury as a result of a fall some years
ago, has found it necessary to under
go an operation in order to obtain
relief and was accompanied to Lin
coln last Tuesday by Dr. J. W. Bren
del, where the operation was per
formed. It is hoped that John will
soon recover and be restored to per
fect health again.
Men's Club Banquet April 20
The Avoca Community Men's club
has arranged to hold another of their
popular get-together meetings and
dinners on Thursday evening, April
20, when they will have as their
principal speaker Lieutenant Cover
nor Johnson, and with some inter
esting comedy numbers also on the
program, all are looking forward to
a pleasant time.
Mrs. Matt Midkiff Better
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Midkiff were at
Nebraska City last Sunday, where
they went to visit with Mrs. Matt
Midkiff, who is in St. Mary's hospital
receiving treatment, she having been
sick for a number of weeks. They
found her feeling much better and
greatly encouraged, as she expects to
be out of the institution In a short
time. ! i

fine Easter dinner, but an egg hunt

honor of the fourth birthday of
Roger Dehnning, son of Mr: and Mrs.
William Dehnning. (The foregoing
news item was written on a sheet of
paper bearing the heading of the
Army and Navy, Young Men's Chris
tian Association, which Mr. Corbin
took with him to France during the
World War and which was not all
used, so now when wanting to fur
nish some news for the Journal, he
looked and this sheet of paper turn
ed up, and he used it. Thank you, Mr.
Corbin, we will keep it as a souvenir.

Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Rannau and
family drove to Syracuse Sunday to
take Easter dinner with Mrs. Ran
nau's parents, Mr. and Mrs. William
Finke.
Friends here of Wm. Hoover, of
Louisville, have received the sad
news of his serious illness and are
anxious to hear of his improve
ment. Clyde Jones, son of Mr. and Mrs.
W. A. Jones and Ray Adams, son of
Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Adams, are now
stationed at Rapid City, South Da
kota, in the CCC camp.
Mrs. F. J. Knecht drove to Ne
hawka Tuesday to visit her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. John AVunderlich and
found them very well. We are glad
to report that they have been very
well most of the winter.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Campbell
drove to Plattsmouth Sunday to
visit relatives. Mrs. Campbell's sis

Wayne drove to Milford Saturday to
visit Mrs. Carnicle's parents, Mr. and

drove to Seward to enjoy Easter day
with an uncle of Mrs, Carnicle, Mr.
J. R. Sweesey and family.
Many of the school children en
joyed the picture show, "Snow White
and the Seven Dwarfs" at the new
theater In Ashland this week. The
7th and 8th grades also enjoyed
"The Man without a Country" which
they had been studying in reading
class in school.

eighth grade pupils, were taking ex
aminations in Murdock Thursday
and Friday. The seventh grade, Dalia
Ward, Carol Streight and Helen
Blum also went Friday.
Friendly Circle Club Meets
The Friendly Circle club met on
Thursday afternoon with Mrs. Nancy
Streight and Mrs. Glenn Thiessen,
with Mrs. Charles Campbell assist
ant hostess. Each lady answered roll
call by naming her favorite flower
and telling why she had chosen it.
Mrs. J. L. Carnicle brought her fa
vorite, a beautiful gloxinia, to show
the ladies.
After the business meeting the
ladies worked on a quilt and visited.
Guests were Mrs. Effie McConnell
and Mrs.Saunders, Miss Lauretta
Burdick and Miss Helen Saunders.

Tne City of Plattsmouth, Nebraska
and others have filed their petition
alleging that Horatio N. Dovey died
intestate in Plattsmouth, Nebr., on
or about June 1, 1930, being a resi
dent and inhabitant of Plattsmouth,
Neb. and died seized of the following
described real estate, to-wit:
Undivided one-third interest
in Lots seven (7), eight (8),
nine (9), ten (10) eleven (11)
and twelve (12) all in block
ten (10) in the City of Platts
mouth, Cass County, Nebraska,
leaving as his sole and only
heirs at law the following named
persons, to-wit: Eva C. Dovey,
widow; George Oliver Dovey,
Helen F. Goehner, Mary lone
Dovey and Edward Grovenor
Dovey, children; and Helen Jane
West, granddaughter.
That the interests of the peti
tioners in said above described real
estate are as follows:
