THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 1939. PLATTSMOUTH SEMI - WEEKLY JOURNAL PAGE FOUR UNION ITEMS. A. L. Becker was looking ofter some business in Lincoln one day last week, also delivering wood. Charles Land was called to Platts mouth Monday morning to secure some needed parts for some autos he was repairing. Bernard Morris and Professor Weyck of the Union schools were over to Nebraska City last Sunday eve ning attending a show. Matthew Midkiff and family ot near Avoca were visiting in Union last Sunday, guests at the home of the parents of Mr. Midkiff, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Midkiff. Mrs. W. A. Taylor and grandson, Donald Iloback and his sister, Miss Marjorie, were down to Nebraska City looking after some shopping last Saturday evening. While in Nebraska City last Sun day afternoon the family of C. E. Morris visited at the home of Mrs. Laura Sans, an aunt of the younger members of the family. A number of the young people of Union drove to Lincoln last Sun day afternoon where they enjoyed a show. Those going were Don Hall, Richard Cole, Dick Hall, Edith Hall, and James Hill. Speaking of her mother. Mrs. Rachel Pell who is nearing her 96th birthday anniversary. Mrs. Ed Mid kiff had to say that the mother was feeling fine and could get about very nicely notwithstanding her advanced years. Mr. and Mrs. Olin Morris of Mur ray were visiting in Union last Sun day, guests of Olin's parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Morris, where all enjoyed a fine dinner and during the after noon all drove to Nebraska City where they attended a show. Con Watkin3 and family of near Murray were guests for the day last Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Land where they all en joyed a very fine dinner. The visit was made the more enjoyable by the Bible. School Sunday, January 29th "Peter Preaches at Pentecost" Acts 2:3-lS; 36-41. The great day in Peter's life had come, where the prophesy of Jesus. made about Peter, three years prev-1 ious, that he should be "a Rock" was to be fulfilled. The niomenteous hour where Joel's prophecy was come to pass, had arrived, given 870 years before, the Holy Spirit had taken the place of the ascended Christ, to complete the work of re deeming the world; the apostles had "received power;" all things were ready to usher in the new dispensa tion; the men of the hour are there, the representatives of Israel are pres ent, the man who was entrusted with the "keys of heaven" is ready to open the gates, while three thousand enter into the new relationship of the new covenant the day of Pen tecost was fully come. We take a look at the men. who fifty days before had forsaken their Lord, fleeing in the presence of dan ger and leaving him alone; here they meet some of the same men who had witnessed the scene at the garden; but they show no fear nor any timidity, but rather a courage that even baffles the c,rowd, who in astonishment call out: "Are not these . . . Galileans?" Whence the great change? All can experience such a change, if they will only tarry long enough in the "upper room" and wait until the Holy Spirit comes with power. May we not forget that an earnest, persistent petition be sent up to the throne of grace if it should take ten or even more, days, until God will send his spirit. After this infilling of power, they cannot be keeping still; they shout the praises of God, for fulfilling his promises, in all the known tongues. Soon the streets are filled with peo- pie; the disciples leave the room and ascend to the housetop. After all the twelve Apostles have spoken, each in a ; different language, and the people express their amazement (some are serious; others scoff and ridicule) it is now that Peter "lifted up his voice" to such a pitch that all could hear and understand. How often do we sit in a church and yet not hear nor understand, because the preacher forgets to "lift up his voice," but seems to speak to him self! And the people heard and un derstoodthey were pricked in their hearts; the words carried conviction, which led to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. Any sermon preached that fails to carry conviction to the hearer, is so fact that Mrs. Land is daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Watkins Another very fine attraction for the grandparents was little Nancy Jane Land, their granddaughter. . Guests at C. L. Greene Home. Mr. and Mrs. Charles L. Greene were host and hostess at their home last Sunday when they entertained for theday and a. very fine dinner Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Harris of Platts mouth, Mrs. Harris being sister of Mr. Greene, and Mr. end Mrs. Jack Brittain, Mrs. Brittain being daugh ter of Mrs. Harris and niece of Mr. Greene, Mrs. C. E. Duff or Cedar Creek, mother of Mrs. Greene. Visit Mynard, Plattsmouth. Last Sunday afternoon Mr. and Mrs. P. F. Rihn were guests for a time at the home of Messrs. Grant and Schuyler Hackenburg near My nard and later went on. to Platts mouth to visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Alwin as well as at the home of Mr. and Mrs. M. S. Briggs, Mrs. Rihn and Mrs. Briggs being long time friends, and Mrs. Rihn was for a number of years a member of the Bibli school class which Mrs. Briggs taught in the Christian church Bible school many years ago. Has Ankle Injured Saturday. Last Saturday while Henry H. Becker was moving a garage at the home of Edgar Morton, in some way the structure overturned and caught Mr. Becker as it fell, pinning him to the ground with the greatest weight on one of his ankles. It was at first thought to be fractured, but later examination developed the fact that the injury was very se vere but no bones broken. However he was able to get about on chutches or in an automobile and made a trip to Nebraska City in his car in the evening. Visiting in North Dakota. Harry Brandt departed for North Dakota where he will visit at the home of Carl Hansen. The gentlemen Lesson Study! By L. Neitzel, Murdock, Neb. much wasted effort. The old simple Gospel preached "with power," will have the same results. We are not having the full sermon of Peter, only fragments. What was the burden of his sermon? Jesus Christ and him crucified but going back to the time when in the counsel of the Trinity, the great plan of the crea tion was born in the mind of God (See Acts 2:23) and ending up with the glorified Christ (See vv. 32, 33). The result of Peter's preaching was a conviction of sin and this was fol lowed by an earnest inquiry: "Men and brethren, what shall we do?" So have men inquired in all ages where, the Gospel is preached in and with power. But that kind of preach ing is not heard very often in fact very rarely; therefore no conversions people only "decide" for Christ, and without a new birth, they live after their decision as before. Not so under Peter's .preaching; there was a change of heart and life; they gave up their sinful life and received the promise of the gift of the Holy Ghost. Much more was said by Peter. (S;e verse 40). That the result of such preaching was sound and genuine is noticed in the concluding vorses of this chap ter; the new born church was orga nized; services were begun, order in the services adopted and people prac ticed their new religion (as people should practice it today) and while there was life, there was growth in development of their spiritual life as well as in numbers. Such is the power of the Gospel. What is wrong with the church today? Why the slow progress? We have a highly educated ministry. It is not lack of equipment; or prepa ration as to schooling. What is the troubje? We wifh all of our preach ers were Galileans, like these men at ( Pentecost. We think the great lack is Holy Ghost power. That, with a thorough equipment of schooling, a natural ability and good common sense and a passion for souls ought to make any preacher a good fisher of men. Pentecost is the reversal of Babel. AVhile at Babel the language was confounded changed into many at Pentecost all languages understood the one great theme, the revealed love of God in Christ the Lord. The world has today 3.664 dia lects. There aie 737 Asiatics; 537 Europeans; 276 Africans; 1624 Americans. Th'j Gospel is preached in more than. 1,000 dialects today; at Pentecost. 1'5 dialects were spok en by the Apostles. are very clos- friends and we are certain they will both enjoy the visit. Following the visit Mr. Brandt will return for a time and then depart for the west where he will take up the study of airplane manufacturing. He is a very fine mechanic and should make an expert In the manufacurlng of airplanes, in which he is greatly interested. . Visit Friends at Manley. Mr. and Mrs. Henry H. Becker and son Donald made a merry party who drove to Manley last Sunday, visit ing for the day at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Hoback, Mr. Hoback being Missouri Pacific agent there. Mrs. Hoback was formerly Miss Genevieve Becker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry II. Becker. Visited Mother at Hospital. ' Mrs. C. E. Withrow of Palmyra, mother of our townsman, Elmer Withrow, is very ill in an hospital at Nebraska City where she has been for some time past. Her . son was down last Sunday to visit her and found her very seriously ill. Will Make Home Near Seward. J. Marion Stone, living southeast of Nehawka was looking after some business matters in Union last Mon day, making preparations for his farm sale which is soon to occur. Mr. Stone and family are to move to Seward where they expect to farm the coming summer, they hav ing secured a farm there some time ago. Will Make Home ni Town. D. B. Porter, who recently rented his home just west of the city to H. W. Griffin held his sale and' will move to town, having secured a couple of rooms to store his goods. To Make Home in Plattsmouth. Mrs. Vesta Clark who has been making her home in Union with her friend, Mrs. Jennie Frans, has gone to Plattsmouth where she has pur chased a home. While she will make her home there she will also cherish a lively recollection of her many friends in Union. Small Lad But Very Busy. Leon Fitzpatrick, a very small lad, but oh how busy, securing a pepper shaker from the table, in his play got it down on the floor, and finding the top would come off poured the pepper down through the grate of the hot furnace, which immediately took ef fect. True it was a mild day and immediately the doors of the cafe as well as the windows flew open and cough, cough cough, everyone was coughing, and the burning pep per drove all out of doors, while lit tle Leon danced in glee. He had found a way to clear the house in stantly. HOLD CHECKER CONTEST Monday evening a group of some eleven of the checker sharks of the city gathered at the Turnbaugh bar ber shop in the Hotel Plattsmouth for a round of their favorite game. The checks were of the old fashion ed type and not the Chinese brand that is now quite the rage. There were some very interesting games among the more expert of the con- testants. 'these games will be play- ed every Monday evening for the winter, it is planned.
