Recalls Early
Days in County
Emily Elizabeth Sayles Recalls

mas holidays in Nebraska, Mrs. Emily
Elizabeth Sayles thought the prime
difference between Christmas, 1854,
at Plattsmouth, and Christmas, 1938,
near Lincoln, was the fact that she
no longer served "crackling corn
bread" for dinner, nor greeted Santa
Claus in a formal gown which owed
its bocped effect to carefully selected
and prepared grapevine.
Mrs. Sayles, daughter of Oliver
and Sarah Jenkins Ward, was born
at Savannah. Mo., August 17, 1848,
the third of a family of 12 children.

lived in a crude log hut near Platts
mouth for several years, and she re
calls the abundance of wild fruit
as well as wild game. Her grand
father, a huntsman of no mean abil
ity, kept the family in venison.
Although she had all she could do
to help with the homework, Mrs.
Sayles recalls that she wafc able to
go as far as the course of study per
mitted In public school. Their recrea
tion came in the form of wool card
Ings and shearings, when the entire
neighborhood came in to assist with
the work.
Mrs. Sayles was married in 1867
to John Sayles, native of Indiana.
They had four children: Anna May,
now dead; Myrtle Ethel, now Mrs.
John Edward Gable of Waverly;
Edith Lenore, now Mrs. Laurel L.
Johnson of David City, and Oliver
Eldred. Mrs. Sayles makes her home
with Mr. and Mrs. Gable. She has 11
grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She is now In her ninety-first year.

she planned to startle the neighbor
hood by assisting with the corn husk
ing. She vow3 that she would have
kept up with her son-in-law.

The court of honor of the Arbor
Lodg-e district of the Boy Scouts of
America was held Tuesday evening
at Nehawka whore the Scouts of that
place were hosts at the auditorium
to the members from all parts of
the district.
Scouts from Plattsmouth, Nehaw
ka, Auburn and Salem were present
to receive their merit badges and
awards for their work in advancing
in scouting.

patrol for a talk on his work.

craft, Billy Robertson was advanced
to the Star Scout.
RETURNS TO KANSAS
Freeman McFarlnnd, who has been
operating his photographic studio
here during the holiday season, de
parted Sunday for Effingham, Kan
sas, where he has been located for
the past two years. Mr McFarland
wa3 taken to Kningham by Mr. and
Mrs.- Leroy Ruse, the latter his
daughter, they stopping for a short
visit with Mrs. McFarland and the
relatives. ,
HAS BUSY TIME
County Treasurer John E. Turner
I was called from his homo Sunday to
get out towing licenses for some
twenty-two cars that were en route
from South Bend, Indiana, to Utah.

they continued on to the west.
