"The Sin of Lying"
Ex. 20:16; Math. 15:19, 2d; John
8:42-47; Eph. 4:25. ' ':'
Of all sins commited by man, this
is the blackest, because man is pow
erless against the liar. Man can de
fend himself against many enemies,
but not against the defamer of his
good name and reputation. It is the
blackest because it has the devil for
its father, it was spawned in hell
and born in iniquity; it has ruined
God's creation, brought death into
the world, and the whole train of
misery, sorrow, suffering and despair
into the world, that man is heir to.
Why should man imitate the devil?
Because man turned from God and
came under the dominion of the
devil. Man's whole nature changed
when he turned from the light to
darkness; he is a slave to sin and
only God can change him back to
become a child of God through Jesus
the Savior. The destructive work
and the trail of the liar runs through
the whole Bible from Genesis 3 to
Revelation 22.
The command of our lesson forbids
all untruthfulness. Swearing falsely
against a fellow man may be per
jury of the worst kind, ruining a
man's reputation, which may take a
long time to live it down. It is the
black art of the devil. Someone
spreads a rumor and by repetition
it quickly grows into a scandal and
often cannot be traced back to its
originator. Swearing falsely in
court has cost some men's lives, as
it did that of our Lord when he was
falsely accused. (See I Kings, 21:13;
Matt. 26:49). The list of martyrs
who through false witnesses suffered
death, is a long one. St. Paul was a
victim of false witnesses. (See Acts
24:5-9).
Gossip is another form of spread
ing false rumors that have destroy
ed reputations, friendships and even
wrecked homes. The liar may cover
his tracks awhile, but sooner or later
his sins will find him out. See for
example, the servant of Elisha, Ge
hazi (II Kings 5:20-27). This lying,
covetous servant got. $4,000 and two
suits of clothes from Naaman. How
long did he enjoy the plunder? Ret
ribution came quick? he had to take
Naaman's leprosy into the bargain.
Another example that it does not pay
to lie. (See Acts 5:1-10).
Our Lord points out the source of
these evil tendencies in man (the
same is referred to above). It is
the unclean heart of man that har
bors this brood of evil. Evil thoughts,
murder, adultries, thefts, fornica
tions, false witness, blasphemies
all these and others! That is the
I
Nehawka where it is in charge of
David Ebersole who will operate the
plant here. The amount of rock to
be used in the hard surfacing of the
22 miles of roadway will require
some twelve months and will employ
a number of men und also many haul
ers of stone to the roads to be im
proved. This should be of benefit to
the merchants of Nehawka as well
as to all the citizens.
Home Prom the East.
On election day just after he had
voted, Stuart Rough stepped into
his auto and departed for Iowa City
where he was a guest at the home
of his daughter, Mrs. J. II. Dane and
family. During the time Mr. Rough
has enjoyed staying in Iowa and also
the very fine visit with the family
of his daughter there. He returned
to Nehawka last Sunday and will
remain here for a time.
Showing Some Improvement.
Frank M. Massie, 87, a resident
of Cass county for the past eighty
years, as he came here at the age of
seven, and who has farmed during
the intervening years was taken some
two weeks ago v ith a severe attack
of pneumonia which with his ad
vanced years was a very severe drain
on his strength. However with that
characteristic which has sustained
him in all the years, he was able
to fight off the attack and come out
the victor. During the past few days
he has been showing good improve
ment and it is hoped that he will soon
be well and about again.
Has Crucial Experience.
The little less than two year old
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert
Scutte'r and granddaughter fo Mr.
and Mrs! Mark Burton was not feel
ing the best and was placed in bed
with a hot water bottle against her
side. However, unknown to the par
ents, the water bottle leaked and the
water was very hot. The child was
badly burned and manifested the fact
as the pain was great. When the
parents noticed the burn that had
been inflicted they in the middle of

condition and inclination of tbe un
regenerated man. Modern preaching
is trying to change this condition by
Christian education that would
eliminate the blood of Jesus Christ,
which alone can wash away our
sins. "The blcod of Jesus Christ,
his Son, eleanseth us from all sin."
(John 1:7). Nothing else has ever
been invented, nor can be substi
tuted for the blood. God, the All
Wise, could not find another rem
edy. The devil dwelling in such a
heart, it takes the power of God to
dislodge him. (See Matt. 17:15-21).
That Satan is the father (origina
tor) of lies, .Jesus proves in his con
troversy with the Pharasees, who
ascribed his miracles as being
wrought by Beelzebub, the devil.
Their reasoning was wrong one
devil would not cast out another
devil they would destroy each
other. ITowhere else does Jesus use
such language as here: "Ye are of
your father, the devil, etc." But he
spoke the truth. The devil was a
murderer from the beginning. He
brought death upon the race of men
by his falsehood. (Rom. 5:12). Then
Jesus throws out the challenge:
"Which of you convicteth me of
sin?"
That challenge has never been
answered. Th-jn why do men not
believe in him? If Jesus is what he
claims he is the Way, the Life, the
Truth and no one can come to the
Father but by him, then we say:
Who will take the chance of the
unbeliever? There is the devil and
hell, and Jesus and heaven. Man
must choose one or the other there
is no neutral ground. Paul's admoni
tion to the Ephesians is a fine cli
max to the lesson.
Having seen how God looks upon
the liar, and the consequences of
lying, and the source and origin of
the liar, we t.re asked if any have
indulged in this the blackest sin, to
stop it and speak the truth each one
with his neighbor, for we are mem
bers one of another. "It will be ob
served that, -whenever St. Paul in
sists on specific duties, there is first
a negative, then a positive state
ment of the 'duty, and then a mo
tive." Chas. Holge.
What will become of men who con
tinue their iniquitous habit of lying
to the end of their days? The answer
is found in Revelations 21:8: . . the
unbelieving . . idolaters and all liars
shall have their part in the lake
which burneth with fire and brim
stone." Jesus says: "Come unto me and
learn of me." He will teach men the
right way.

Annual Dinner, Business Meeting
and Election of Arbor Lodge
District Last Night
Thirty-four Arbor Lodge district
Scouters, including five from Platts
mouth, attended the annual dinner
and business meeting at Nebraska
City Tuesday evening.
The dinner was served at 6:45 in
the private dining room of the Grand
hotel. Following the dinner and a
short session of group singing, re
ports were given on activities, ad
vancement and publicity in the Arbor
Lodge district during the past year.
E. H. Wescott reported on the suc
cessful Camporee held at Camp
Wheeler here in June, Rev. Walter
Jackson reported on Courts of Hon
.r and Elmer Webb reported on pub
licity. It was interesting to note
that the Journal had given more
inches cf space to Scouting activities
than any paper in the district, the
figures compiled by a clipping bureau
showing 215 (nearly eleven news
paper columns) for Plattsmouth,
156 at Nebraska City, 91 at Auburn,
30 at Talmage, 27 at Peru, 12 at Ne
hawka and 10 at Syracuse all of
which towns maintain one or more
active troops. Plans to organize an
Arbor Lodge Scout press bureau, with
older scouts in the various troops as
news reporters are being formulated
for the coming year.
Carl Damast, finance chairman,
stated that for the first time in sev
eral years he was able to report the
per capita dues of Arbor Lodge dis-
the night hurried the child to the
doctor who treated it and rendered
what service possible for the relief of
the burn and to stop the pain.
Visiting With Aged Mother.
Frank Lemon, who has been the
village barber in Nehawka for many
years has his mother at Rock Rapids,
Minn., whom he had not seen for
twelve years, and desiring to know
her state of health and to see the
mother, departed a few days ago for
Rock Rapids where he is spending
the greater part of this week visiting
there. He went via train to Omaha
and from there via bus to the home of
the mother.
Visited Here During Vacation.
Dr. Henry W. Walters, former phy
sician of Nehawka, who accepted a
position with the government in
South Carolina where the family have
since made their home, with the com
ing of his two weeks vacation, came
to Nehawka for a visit and also at
Lincoln. The doctor and family have
been entertained at the home of
friends here and at Lincoln.
Home for Holiday and Sunday.
A number of Nehawka students
who are attending Doane college at
Crete, were home over Thanksgiving
vacation from Thursday to Monday,
being taken back to school by Mr.
and Mrs. Eugene J. Nutzman. The
party included Betty Ross, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ross, Laverne
Steffens, son of J. H. Steffens, Dean
Nutzman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eu
gene J. Nutzman. They were taken
back last Sunday afternoon.
Miss Susanne Yeiser Better.
Miss Susanne Yeiser, granddaugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Sturm, mak
ing her home with her parents, John
Yeiser and wife of Omaha, was quite
ill with a severe attack of influenza
during the past week. Mrs. A. F.
Sturm, her grandmother, was in Om
aha during the past week assisting
in the care of her littleg randdaugh
ter who was reported as being much
better when Mrs. Sturm returned at
the end of the week.
Entertained for Sunday Dinner.
Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Kruger were
host and hostess last Sunday aUtheir
home in Nehawka when they enter
tained for the day and dinner, having
the entire family with them, Law
rence Kruger and family of near
Avoca, Harvey Geade and family of
Syracuse and Fred Geade and family
of Dunbar.

trict to the Cornhusker council for
the year paid in full, and two towns
in the district have already turned
in their 1939 dues. Only the Arbor
Lodge and one other district of the
fourteen have achieved this.
Willis Elliott, of Lincoln, assist
ant executive, reported on the dis
trict membership, which is slightly
below last year, due to dropping of
three troops and transfer of one to
Lincoln district, but an increase in
the membership of those troops that
remain active.
Plan Another Camporee Here
The meeting was adjourned for
twenty minutes of group discussion,
at the end of which the Scoutmasters
group brought in a recommendation
that this year's summer activity be
another Camporee and that it be
again held at Camp Wheeler here.
Another recommendation was that
the district give consideration to the
establishment of a Cubbing program
(for boys 9 to 12) during the com
ing year. The advancement group
recommended that strict examina
tions be continued as the requisite
for advancement and merit badges in
the future as during the past year,
to hold up the high standards set
by the National organization.
Election of Officers
The meeting then proceeded to
the election of officers, giving its
unanimous approval to the report of
the Nominations committee.
Bert Swalley was renamed as the
district chairman. The four vice
chairmen named are Dr. C. A. Lut
gen of Auburn .and E. H. Wescott,
Plattsmouth (re-elected); F. L.
Clements, of Peru, and Glen Rut
ledge, of Nehawka. Carl Damast, of
Nebraska City was renamed finance
chairman and promised backing to
keep up the Arbor Lodge district's
record for promptness of payment
again this year.
Other district offices are appoint
ive and will be announced later by
the chairman-elect, :.
Hear Splendid Address
C. S. Wilson, of . Lincoln, chair
man of the Cornhusker Council was
then heard in a splendid 15 minute
address in which he touched on many
of the highlights of Scouting. His
fund of stories was. most complete
ard kept the audience in laughter
much of the time.
Mr. Wilson expressed regrets that
the Council is to lose its executive,
B. B. Dawson, .who goes to New
Mextco to take charge . of and de
velop a 35,000 acre Rocky Mountain
camp for older Scouts. Not only the
land, but $50,000 for development
of this "wilderness", camp has been
donated to the National Boy Scout
organization by Mr, Phillips, the
Phillips 66 oil magnate.
It was near midnight when the
group from here, consisting of Ray
mond Larson, scoutmaster and E. H.
Wescott, E. G. Ofe, Fred Lugsch and
Elmer Webb, members of the local
Legion troop committee arrived
home.
