Trying: to Avoid Postage
A business firm in another city,
driving through the county, has been
depositing advertising matter for his
business in the boxes of rural mail
patrons without postage. The prac
tice of the postal department has
been to pick up the mail so deposited
and take the same to the office where
it is held for postage. There is con
siderable of a penalty prescribed for
the use of mail facilities without
the payment of postage and those
doing so are liable for a fine when
they are apprehended and the mat
ter proven on thim. It looks like a
very dangerous piece of business to
try to avoid the payment of postage
in this manner.
Mrs. Dannels Very Sick
Mrs. Dannels, mother of Leland
Dannels, Avoca high school coach,
is seriously ill at the family home in

was such as to permit him to resume
his school work here. Friends trust
she will continue to improve.

As last Sunday marked the pass
ing of the birthday of Mrs. John
Luge, a number of friends gathered

celebration of the occasion, bringing

good things to eat.
Those present besides members of
the family were Mr. and Mrs. Ernest
Emschoff and family, Morris Ruge
and wife, Frances Ruge, Mr. and
Mrs. Henry Maseman and Mr. and
Mrs. J. M. Kokjer, all of Avoca; Mr.
and Mrs. Louis Ehlers of Weeping
Water and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ross
who live south of Nehawka.
Visited Avoca Tuesday
G. M. Porter, of Lincoln, repre
sentative of the Nebraska Children's
Home Society was in Avoca Tuesday
in the interest of the orphans home
operated by the society under auth
ority of the State of Nebraska, but
maintained only by voluntary con
tributions from the general public.
Mr. Porter makes the rounds of Ne
braska towns each year soliciting
contributions. He reports there are
r.ow 335 children being cared for at
the home. This is certainly a very
meritorious proposition and all who
can afford to do so should give lib
erally to help carry on this work.
Held Shooting- Match Sunday
The Weeping Water Chamber of
Commerce sponsored a shooting
match at the. farm home of State
Senator Fred L. Carsten last Sunday
v. hich attracted a large number of
the marksmen of the community.
There was an abundance of turkeys,
geese and ducks for those who were
able to hit the bullseye frequently.
