State Adjusting
After Upturn
In Elections
Governor Cochran Accepts Verdict as
Desire to Avoid the Utopian
Plans of Campaign.
OMAHA, Nov. 10 (UP) Nebraska
today began taking stock of its new
political situation following the many
surprising results of Tuesday's bal
loting which gave the republicans
two new congressmen and ousted
every democratic office holder in the
state house with the exception of
Secretary of State Harry Swanson.
Governor R. L. Cochran, by virtue
of a 3S.000 lead in Omaha was able
to eke out a 15,000 majority over
Charles J. Warner, republican.. With
the mail vote yet to be counted the
total number of ballots cast will be
about 500,000 of which Cochran will
have 220,000, Warner 205,000 and
former Gov. Charles W. Bryan about
75,000.
Latest returns from the outlying
rural districts enabled T. W. Bass,
Broken Bow to defeat State Treas
urer Walter Jensen by about 5,000
votes on the basis of the unofficial
returns In the early counting Jen
sen had held onto a 20,000 lead he
had acquired in Omaha.
Addition of the two missing first
district precincts failed to change
the congressional race and without
the mail vote George II. Heinke, rep.,
has a 300 lead over Rep. Henry
Luekey, democrat.
Other results reported yesterday
remained unchanged.
There were those that boasted that
Nebraska's famed "white spot" had
won because of Cochran's victory.
But until an analysis of the new
unicameral legislature is had no one
will know in what direction the
state's policies will turn.
Unicameral results disclosed that
20 old members were returned, but

"The Sacredness of Human Life"
Ex. 20:13; Matt. 5:21-36; 38-42.
This commandment is very des
pite. But it is not universally be-1
lieved in. There are groups of sin
cere Christians who do not believe in
capital punishment; they believe
human. life too sacred to destroy it
through the medium of any human
agency; they argue that since life
is the gift of God, man must not
destroy it (since he cannot restore
it). It is only the prerogative of
God, which he did in the O. T. in a
number of cases, when man and na
tions absolutely refused to obey Him,
or become a menace to others. He
ordered their removal, such as many
heathen nations, living in Canaan,
even rebels among his chosen race
Korah, Dathan and Abram (See
Numbers 16:32). Positive orders of
God are Gen. 9:6; Lev. 24:17. While
it is abhorent to a Christian to take
human life, yet it becomes necessary
to remove the murderer, and it can
happen in self-defense. But no man
has a right to .kill another to gain
possession- of the other's property.
In so doing he forfeits his own life
and the law holds him responsible;
and when the killing was premedi
dated he will pay the supreme pen
alty with his own life. So capital
punishment is established by law.
Is war justifiable? That is an
other question that's debatable. In
case of invasion, war would be justi
fied, to defend our homes and coun
try a defensive war! One may kill
another in self-defense. These are
the two exceptions and must be read
between the words of the statute.
As man is made in the image of
God, and whosoever strikes a blow
at that image offends Him whose is
the image, "Whoso sheddeth man's
blood, by man shall his blood be
shed." This law has never been
abrogated. But our Lord gives an
interpretation that is far-reaching,
but little practiced by his disciples,
Unjustified anger and holding a
grudge are bitterly condemned.
"Raca." the word means "con
tempt" for a fellow man, more in
human than anger, a violent pas-
Fion, prompting .to . words and acts
often bitterly regretted when the
Lot temper cools down." The word
here translated, "thou fool" is the
equivalent of "good for nothing" or
"morally worthless," a more serious
form or contempt than "Raca." The
judgment here spoken ojr .is that, of
a Jewish court, as ordered in Deut.
16:18.
Contempt and hatred may lead to
murder. "Hell. of fire" refers ulti
mately to everlasting punishment
showed the defeat of 12 including
such conservative stalwarts as Robert
M. "Armstrong, Auburn; John Knick
rehm, Grand Island; William Worth
ing and Paddy McMahon. Omaha, and
John D. Reynolds, Niorara. Others
defeated were Emil Brodecky, Kow
ells; Henry Brondt, Beatrice, Frank
Wells, Fairbury; R. C. Regan, Co
lumbus; Tracy Frost, St. Paul; Earl
Camenter. Guide Rock, and Harry
Pizer, North Platte.
Political thought of successors of
these men and of others elected to
the legislature was unknown as many
Instances. Some of them, it was
known, had won because of backing
of old-age pension and other groups.
Because of the scrombled results
it was hard to get a delinite line on
the strength of the sentiment on old
age pension and homestead exemp
tion. Both Warner and Bryan advo
cated or gave tacit approval of them.
So did Terry Carpenter.
Cochran and William E. Johnson,
republican lieutenant governor-elect,
oppose any change in the "white
spot" program. Both were elected
but by small margins, Cochran be
cause of a big lead in Omaha.
Other tests of conservatism versus
radicalism were had in the first and
fourth congressional district races
In hte fourth staunch New Dealer
Charles G. Binderup went down to
smashing defeat by Carl T. Curtis,
republican. In the first Rep. Luekey,
who, however did not support the
new deal by anything like 100 per
cent, lost to conservative George H.
Heinke, whose first motion if he
goes to Washington probably would
be to repeal all present agricultural
legislation.
Gov. Cochran in a statement, how
ever, took the result to mean en
dorsement of his policies as gover
nor. The result, the governor said,
"serves notice to a nation gone wild
over Utopian schemes and nostrums,
that this is one state that continues
to operate in a conservative and rea
sonable manner."
It was pointed out that thoso can

Lesson Study!
By L. NeitzeL Mnrdock, Neb.
executed by God. These words are
never preached on, almost never ex
pounded; yet they came from the
lips of our Lord and should not be
ignored.
The altar was the place for the
Jew to draw nigh unto God, not
only to worship, but to sacrifice for
the cleansing of his sins, a place
where he was made right again with
God. Now, no man can be right with
God and wrong with man. Our Lord
teaches us that a man must first be
reconciled with his neighbor before
he can meet God.
Because of the many differences
between members of the church and
the bitter and hard feeling, the
church is so impotent and fruitless.
The world does not say, "Behold, j
how they love each other," but
rather, "how they hate and fight
each other."
Now, Jesus teaches us the atti
tude we should assume towards
those who injure us. The passage
quoted by our Lord is found in Lev.
24:20; Deut. 19:21, 39. The injunc
tion here is not to be taken as in
troducing a statement by our Lord
repudiating the law of the Old Tes
tament, but rather enlarging upon
it and discovering its true and deep
er meaning.
"Turn the other cheek" is hard to
interpret, moreover hard to do. It has
no reference to ah assault to do bod
ily injury, but rather an insult to
the other person, to shame him, or
anger one against whom he has a
grudge. The person so struck, ac
cording to our Lord's teaching is not
to strike back, for that would mean
that he had become angry, and in
doing so sins. Hatred is aroused
in his heart and he becomes as much
involved in iniquity as the one
striking him.
Our Lord is not condemning or
forbidding the right of self-defense,
either personal or national. Our
Lord and the Apostles did not sub
mit to insult or evil treatment in a
slavish manner. (See John 18:22, 23-
Acts 23:3). But the Lord and the
Apostles gave us a further example
how to act. (See Isa. 50:6 and I
Cor. 4:9-15). That can only be ex
pectcd from the true followers of
Christ, and it requires all the grace
that God can give. Brother should
not go to law with a brother, rather
suffer wrong than do wrong. Giving
to them that ask must be done with
.discretion. Christians are the most
charitable people, and their charity
U much abused; all the institutions
of any kind that benefit the human
race are the outgrowth of the Chris
tian, to preserve human life.
didates re-elected to congress, Mc
Laughlin, Omaha, Coffee, Chadron
and Stefan, Norfolk, are all conserv
atives, whereas Luekey, Binderup and
Edgar Howard, defeated by Stefan
had been endorsed by Townsendites.
Robert Simmons' majority over
"Abe" Sorensen for chief justice will
approximate about 50,000 on the of
ficial count.
Only repeal of the double banking
liability clause received more af
firmative than negative votes in the
balloting on constitutional amend
ments. So many people failed to vote
on amendments, however, that even
this is likely to fail because the total
of affirmative votes is, not expected
to reach the necessary 35 per cent. j
The vote on the proposal will not
exceed 300,000 of tl2 500,000 cast
and its majority is likely to be In
the neighborhood of 20,000. It will
take the official count and a deci
sion by the secretary of state on
whether 35 per cent of the total vote
had been obtained to determine the
result. The slot machine amendment
was defeated more than 3 to 1.
EARLY FRUIT RAISING
Today, the orchards of southeast
ern Nebraska make a beautiful sight
in early spring when the trees were
in bloom, and again in the fall when
the ripened fruit bends branches al
most to the ground. Once, however,
this was a country of rough, tim
beerd slopes apparently worthless,
at least for agriculture. Enterpris
ing pioneers, observing the numer
ous growths of wild lruit trees, de
cided to try fruit raising.
Early attempts to develop these
slopes into a fruit producing coun
try, say research workers of the
Federal Writers" Project, WPA, were
started almost as soon as the terri
tory was opened for settlement. One
of the early experimenters in the
fruit industry, William H. Lowe, of
Nebraska City, reported in 1867 that
his first crop of peaches, harvested
in 1860, was fifty bushels and that
his crop had increased every year
for several years- Mr. Lowe also had
an orchard of between two and three
hundred apple trees, from which he
got good yields every year after 1S61.
Another pioneer Nebraska fruit
grower, J. IV. Masters, of Otoe county,
reported in 1S69 thit he had had
satisfactory results growing apples,
pears, cherries, currants, . apricots
and gooseberries.
Many other fruit growers had
equal success and helped to make
the fruit of southeastern Nebraska
famous throughout the nation.
