TENDERED SURPRISE
Tuesday market the birthday anni
versary of A. W. Cloidt, veil known
gas and oil dealer and last evening
he was given a very pleasant re
minder' of the fact that his natal day
had arrived. A group of friends and
neighbors came in and tendered him
a very pleasant surprise and a line
evening was enjoyed, cards and visit
ing serving to pass the time. At the
close of the evening a much appre
ciated lunch was served. Those to
take part in Ihe event were Theo
dore 1'iak. Dr. F. K. Moluk. Kenneth
Kchmitt. K. II. Bernhardt, Frank
Godwin, J. F. Warga und Robert
Fitch.
HEAR TRAFFIC CASE

turned this morning to their home

This morning in the court of
Judge C. Ij. Graves, a hearing was
had in a complaint charging Charles
Land, of Union, with reckless driv
ing. This case follows one last week
in which Mr. Land was the complain
ing witness againstJoy Miller for
reckless driving, in which Miller was
fined $10 and costs.
In the (ase today Miller was the
complaining witness anil the court
after hearing the evidence assessed
a fine of S10 and eosrs against Land
which was paid.

RETURN FROM COLORADO

Mayor George Lushinsky returned
last evening from Colorado Springs
where he has been at the bedside of
his brother, William Lushinsky,
whose condition has been very criti
cal. The brother suffered a stroke
several days ago and is now bedfast.
Mrs. Martha Roesner of Lincoln, a
f.ister. accompanied Mayor Lushinsky
to Colorado Springs.

Next Sunday evening, June 19, the
Christian Endeavor group of the My
nard United Brethren church will
present the sermon-drama, "Nason,
the Blind Disciple" at the regular
hour of meeting, eight o'clock.
The service will be held in the
basement auditorium, and the pub
lic is cordially invited. A free will
offerins: will be taken, in order to
assist in financing the grout) who
will attend the summer camp con
ference at York next week.
Morning services will be held at
the regular hour next Sunday. At
tendance and interest are holding up
well as the hot weather approaches

ATTEND FUNERAL SERVICES

Dr. and Mrs. V. V. Ryan were at
Omaha today where they attended
the funeral services for Thomas
Francis Finnigan, 74. uncle of Mrs.
Ryan, who passed away on Monday.
The funeral services were held at
9 o'clock this morning at the St.
Cecilia's cathedral and the interment
at the St. Mary's cemetery.
Mr. Finnigan is survived by his
widow, Hannah M., three sons, Ray
mond, Leo and Cornelius, two daugh
ters, Grace and Mary Finnigan. nine
grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Anton Svoboda, Jr.,
and children of Denver are in the
city to visit their patents, Mr. and
Mrs. Anton Svoboda, Mr. and Mrs.
John Jirousek and their sisters and
brothers. They made the trip by
amo and expect to stop at Lawrence,
Xebr., on their way home at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Janda,
a sister of Mrs. Svoboda. Mrs. Svo
boda was formerly Miss Alba Jirousek.
SECURE MARRIAGE LICENSE
From Wednesday's Daily
Marriage license was issued today
by Judge A. II. Duxbury to Harold
Edward Conley, of Weeping Water
and Austa Heard of Louisville. The
young people were both under age
and were accompanied by their fath
ers, George W. Conley and James
Heard to give their consent.
William Ritchie, prominent Omaha
attorney and past state commander
of the American Legion, will be a
guest in the city Sunday and speaker
at the morning services at the Meth
odist church.
Mr. Ritchie spent some time in the
orient and particularly China, just
prior to the outbreak of the warfare
between Japan and Chii.a and had a
very fine opportunity of seeing the
country. He will talk on the matter
of missions of the various churches
that have been laboring in the China
field for years and where a large
section of the population has been
won to the Christian faith.
Mr. Ritchie is a prominent leader
in the Episcopal church at Omaha
and while abroad took particular
care to study the work of the mis
sion field of his church and others.
The general public is invited to be
in attendance at the morning service
and enjoy the fine discussion of the
mission work.
HOLD CHILDREN'S DAY SERVICE
i ne Sunday school classes of the
Latter Day Saints church presented
a fine program during the Sunday
school hour yesterday morning. Im
mediately following the program the
members of the church left in cars
for the Coolman grove, one-half mile
north of Murray where they held a
picnic dinner. The games and con
tests held during the afternon were
under the supervision of Mrs. C. I.
Chandler. About 70 members attended.
NOTICE TO TAXPAYERS
FINED ON TRAFFIC CHARGE

This morning in county court a
traffic charge was filed by Patrol
man Marvin Wiley, against Mrs.
Murna Biegen. of Nebraska City.
The charge was that of reckless driv
ing, it being alleged that the de
fendant had passed two cars on a
hill in violation of the state law.
After hearing the evidence as pre
sented. Judge A. H. Duxbury assess
ed a fine of $10 and costs for the of
fense. This is the first conviction of
a woman trail tc taw violator in tne
local court.
TO VISIT IN OLD HOME
From Monday's Pally
John Wooster and son, Henry, of
Reliance, South Dakota, arrived in
the city today for a visit at the home
of Mr. Wooster's brother, Joseph
Wooster and family. They have been
visiting at Umalia with. William
Kriskey, Jr.. and family, the former
a nephew. 'I he wooster ramily for
merly made their home in Platts
mouth. but have for a great many
years been located in Dakota.
The second half of the 19.17 per
sonal taxes will be delinquent July
1. 193S, and will draw interest at
7 per annum from that date. The
law requires that the County Treas
urer issue distress warrants against
all unpaid persona! taxes in July.

Tuesday afternoon James E. Warga
and daughter, Marylin motored to
Omaha and returned with Mrs.
Warga and the new daughter, the
family circle being reunited on the
farm south of the city.

at Ashland last evening. They at
tended the meeting of the Ashland
Masonic lodge and both were speak
ers on the program that followed the
regular work.

Iowa, were here Saturday and Sun
day to visit among the old time
school friends and associates. They
have been enjoying a vacation trip
west and to visit their parents, Mr.

Nebraska. Garland graduated here
in 1931 and Maynard in the class of
