Miss Clara Dennis is working for

spent last Sunday and Memorial day
at Hastings, where they were guests
at the home of Mrs. Preston's par
ents. Mrs. Lucy Lyle and daughter,
Mrs. Floy Buell and her daughter,
Idella. attended a convention of 4-II
clubs at Lincoln during the past
week.
Mr. and Mrs. Win. Flaischman
spent Sunday and Memorial day in

the home of Mr. and Mrs. Max
Fisher.
Mr. and Mrs. Emil Rosenow were
visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Albeit Theil and also with Mr. and
Mrs. J. F. Gustin near Murdock on
Memorial day.

Mrs. Harry Williams last Sunday
were Mr. and Mrs. Russell Reeder.

The Epworth League of the Metho
dist church gave a very pleasant en
tertainment in the shape of a min
strel show, that was largely attend
ed and from which they realized a
neat sum for the carrying on of
their church work.
Mr. and Mrs. Jay Stanton closed
their cream station over Memorial
day and drove to their former home
at Elk Creek, where they visited
friends and relatives. Jay says the
f .Tillers there are no farther along
with their coin planting than in
this part of the country.
Mrs. W. E. Rosencrans and her
daughters. Mrs. W. C. Soennichsen
and Miss Mary, of Plattsmouth. vis
ited in Elmwood Sunday and were
guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Ralph Greene. The Rosencrans fam-
ily resided here many years ago be- j
fore moving to Plattsmouth. !
James Payne, who worked here;
last summer for a time during his'
vacation, arrived in Elmwood last j
Tuesday from Enid, Oklahoma, and i
temeier of near Murray, a daughter
and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Koch, of West Bend, Iowa, and their
son Paul Schlichtemeier and family,
of Scottsbluff, Nebr.. all of whom
have been guests at the parental
home near Murray prior to coining
to Elmwood for the reunion and
dinner yesterday.
Observed Memorial Day
Under the sponsorship of the
American Legion post of Elmwood,
assisted by the women of the Auxil
iary and citizens generally. Memor
ial day was most appropriately ob
served here. The Elmwood band pro
vided music for the occasion. The
gathering was held at the commun
ity building and was well attended.
Rev. F. C. Weber, pastor of the
Callihan church north of Elmwood
was the speker at the cemetery, to
which place the assemblage marched
in a body from the hall. Earlier in
the graves had been decorated and
the cemetery was most beautiful.
Visited at Home of Father
Floyd Gerbeling and family of
Plattsmouth visited in Elmwood last
Sunday, guests at the home of Mr.
Gerbeling's father. A sister of Floyd.
Mrs. A. V. Conger, of Grand Island,
was also here for a visit, coming to
decorate the graves of friends and
relatives in the Elmwood cemetery.
In the evening Floyd returned to

homes of O. E. and Robert McDon
old. and with them also visited in
Greenwood at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Wm. Meyers.
Arnold Schliefert and wife, ac
companied by their daughter, were
in Omaha last Tuesday looking after
business and visiting friends, and on
their return home were accompanied
by Marjorie llartman. who spent a
few days at Weeping Water.

Frank Marshall besides being in

VILLAGE SMITHY "ROBBED''
DENNIS VILLE, N. J., June 2
(UP) No poetically spreading
chestnut tree shaded Peter Hanke,
the village blacksmith, while he
worked; he worked indoors; but he
buried his savings under a stately
willow tree and for four anguished
cays he thought they were gone.

had been robbed of every penny he
had saved in 20 ears of toil at the
anvil, IS hours a day. He had lost
faith In banks during the banking
holidays, he said, and had converted
his savings into $1,000 bills. He had
six of them and had stuffed them
into a tin can and buried them under
the willow tree.
Two Cape May county detectives
went to investigate with shovels.
For four days they dug persistently.
ignoring Hanke's suggestions that
they had better be out hunting the
robber. Yesterday, under two feet
of earth, nestled against the willow
roots and only six feet from where
Hanke had thought he buried his
money, they turned up the treasure
laden can.
Hanke has $6,000 in the bank today.
LIQUOR FIND SPEEDS WORK
TOCATELLO, Ida. (UP) WPA

Inkon, unearthed a cache of a pre
prohibition bootlegger. The qual
ity proving fine, and a report spread
ing that another 5-gallon jug of
well-aged moonshine was buried in
the vicinity, rapid progress was made
on speeding up the road improvement.

Band to Play at Ak-Sar-Ben
The Elmwood band will furnish
a portion of the music at the Ak-Sar-Ben
den in Omaha this (Mon
day) evening which in addition to
being opening night for den shows
this season, is also southeastern Ne
braska and Masonic grand lodge
night. A large number from here
are planning on attending the show.

Making Improvements at Elevator
Frank Marshall has been making
some improvements that the service
at the elevator might be improved.
The approaches to the unloading
pit have been graded and gravel
spread on the driveway to keep it in
good condition in all kinds of weath
er. During the last few drouth years
elevator business has not been very
lucrative, but this year with pros
pects for a crop. Mr. Marshall be
lieves in Leing ready to handle the
grain when it comes.

There were many former residents
of this vicinity present, probably the
largest number to attend a Memorial
clay service here in the past ten
years.
LINCOLN, June i (UP) The new
student union building at the Univer
sity of Nebraska will be the center of
social activities to be held in con
nection with HioS commencement ex
ercises. A dinner dance is scheduled for
tomorrow night, and after the Bac
calureate sermon Sunday afternoon
university officials w;ll hold open
house in the lounge for graduating
seniors.
A commencement will be held at
the student center Monday noon following-
the commencement program.

proximately iH)n women will gather
at Grand Island next Wednesday for
the second annual three-day meeting
of the Nebraska Council of Home
Demonstration clubs, college of ag-
j riculture officials announced today.
Delegates from virtually every
county will attend. Some 11,000
women, most of them farm wives
are members of the council. Miss
Mary-Ellen Brown, state leader of
the home demonstration work, said

Holding Vacation Bible School
Vacation Bible school opened last
week at St. Patrick's Catholic church
for the giving of instructions to a
group of young students who have
not had the advantages of parochial
school training and who after the
close of this period of instruction
will be ready for confirmation. The

St. Patrick's during the absence of

Hail Destroys Wheat Crop
George Colbert and their daugh
ter. Mrs. Howard Brown, who re
side in the western part of the state,
were here for Memorial day and at
tended the gatherinsat the Wabash
cemetery. While they were here a
devastating hail storm visited their
part of the state, ruining some 300
acres of winter wheat for Mr. Brown
that had given great promise of re
turning a line yield. It is quite like
ly he will plant the land to corn,
as there has been a good amount of
moisture out there so far this year,
and there is yet time to mature a
corn crop under favorable condi
tions. The farmer gambles when he
sows or plants his fields, but even so
life itself is a gamble and the city
resident also has his ups and downs.
Will he have a job tomorrow, will
his wages be reduced, will the price
of living increase? True, indeed. life
is a gamble.

suant to an order of attachment and
garnishment issued by A. II. Dux
bury, County Judge of Cass County,
Nebraska, in an action pending be
fore said County Judge wherein
George E. Nickles was plaintiff and
Charles Barrows, defendant, to re
cover the sum of $189.4 1 plus in
terest at the rate of 6 per annum
from April 15, 193S, plus a reason
able attorney fee and costs of this
action, a writ of attachment and
garnishment was levied upon the
credits due you from Loretta Naeve
on a certain promissory note in the
amount of $500.00 plus interest,
dated September 14, 1937 and due
March 14, 193S. which said credits
were paid in to the said Court upon
the order of the said County Judge,
and the said case was, on the return
day of the summons issued therein
continued for trial to the 11th day
of June, 1938, at 10 o'clock a. m.
