Attended Comrade's Funeral
In the stirring days of the Spanish-!
American war, many of the now older!
boys of Cass county formed a com-
pany of fighters which were under the;
direction of Capt. C. A. Raw Is. In j
that company was W. H. Kruger of
Nehawka, Bert Austin, late of Wa
bash, whose funeral was held last
w-'ok at Wabash, conducted by Rev.
W. A. Taylor. As Mr. Austin was
a veteran of the Spanish-American
war it was tnought propert that a
tiring hquad be present and fire the
last salute over his grave. John
Woods in charge, called over the tele
phone at noon, asking Mr. Kruger if
a sjuad could be brought from Ne
hawka. With dinner to be gotten
and the distance made by the time of
the funeral which was to be held at
2 o'clock, there was no time to lose.
o Mr. Kruger hustled to the tele
phone and was able to get a squad
of the World war boys and had the
squad at Wabash just as the first song
was being sung at the funeral, and
properly fired the salute when the
proper time came.
