CHAPTER XXXV
"I never realized." said Mrs.
Knight, "that a child's first teeth
were so important. If mothers only
knew how important they are, I'm
sure they would give them better
care."
"That it true," replied Dr. Young.
"Fortunately, mothers are learning.
Magazines, newspapers, and the radio
are devoting a great deal of space to
child health. Parents are more health
conscious than ever before."
"Do you think Carl's face would
be disfigured if you extracted that
baby molar and did not put in a
space maintainer?" asked Mrs.
Knight.
"I wouldn't say definitely," an
swered the dentist. "It might and it
might not. I do know that the early
loss of the baby teeth often plays
havoc with the shape of a child's
jaws and mouth.
"Let me show you a few pictures
of some interesting cases which I
have in my collection. These are pic
tures of children who lost one or
more of their baby teeth early in
life. Their permanent teeth came in
crooked and they had to spend many
months under the care of an ortho
dontist in having their teeth
straightened, simply because they
weren't given the proper preventa
tive dental care.
"Here is a young girl whose lower
baby molars were so badly decayed
that they had to be extracted when
she was 6 years old. Her sixth year
or first permanent molars shifted
forward into the 6pace left by her
lost baby molars. This caused her
upper and lower teeth to come to
gether improperly. As she grew old
er, her upper front teeth shifted for
ward and her lower front teeth.
shifted backward. Naturally, this
spoiled her looks, as it gave her a
rabbit-like cast of countenance.
"Here is another case," said the
dentist, as he picked up a second
picture, "which could have been pre
vented had the child been given pre
ventive dental care. Notice how the
bicuspids on one side of the mouth
are crowded and crooked. That was
caused by the fact that the baby mo
lars were extracted too soon. Some
times, when the baby molars are lost
too soon, the child's first permanent
or sixth year molors tip forward and
partially close upthe space. This, of
course, prevents the bicuspids, which
are the permanent teeth that .replace
the baby molars, from coming in pro
perly. . In fact, sometimes, the first
permanent molar tips so far forward
that the bicuspid becomes locked be
neath it and can't erup'at all.
"This is an interesting case," Con
tinued the dentist, as he held up'a
picture of a ; fourteen-year-old girl.
"This child has a buck tooth. See
how the upper cuspid has been forc
ed out of line and how it has erupt
ed above the other teeth? Because
she lost two of her baby molars when
she was quite young, her Jaws did
not develop properly. Because of the
underdeveloped jaws, her teeth were
so crowded that her upper perma
nent cuspid, had to erupt above and
to one side of her other teeth.
"Each one of these cases of abnor
mal occlusion, as they are called,
could have been prevented had these
children been given the proper kind
of early dental care."

29 LIVES SNUFFED OUT IN
ACCIDENTS FROM OCT. 9-16
Twenty-nine people in Nebraska
lost their lives- as the result of acci
dents during the week ending Octo
ber 16, 1937 according to the report
compiled by the State Department of
Public Instruction and the Nebraska
Press Association. This high has been
reached only once before. The week
ending July 11, 1936 also recorded
twanty-iine deaths. Accidents for
the week showed a continued drop
totaling only two hundred seventy as
compared to three hundred twenty-
two for the week ending October 2,
1937 and injuries and deaths came to
two hundred fifty-nine as compared
to two. hundred eighty-two of 'the
previous week. The children's report
for this week shows five children
killed, pne disabled, and fifty-six in
jured. JAZZ BAND AT PALACE
LONDON. Nov. IS .UP King
George VI has broken a tradition
which even his predecessor the pres
ent Duke of Windsor was unable to
do, Buckingham Palace attendants
agreed today.
For the first time a ''jazz'' band
played for the royal dancers and
1,000 other guests in the palace's
ball room last night at the court ball
in honor of King Leopold III ot
Belgium.
Former King Edward could not do
t'aat, palace sources said, because
most of his brief reign was the offi
cial mourning period for the late
King George V.

where they went to visit at the home
of Will Heinemann. who resides a
few miles north of that historic old
village. While there tkey attended a
sale and purchased some apples. In
speaking of the apples raised down
there, Henry says there are thous
ands of fine apples still laying in
heaps in the orchards awaiting for
some one to buy them.
Shall We Have a Town Team?
The Murdock high school has a
fine basketball team again this year,
that can be counted upon to take
more than their share of games
played. There are also some tip-top
players here from the high school
teams of former years who are desir-
ft "
ious of organizing a town team. The
Independent Order of Foresters have
provided the uniforms and other in
cidental expense of getting a team
organized, but the big problem i9
finding a suitable place to practice
at a figure which the boys interested
in forming the team feel they can
afford to pay. Some are of the opin
ion the Foresters should also bear
this expense. The matter of raising
money for the rent of such a place
is being considered by a number of
citizens and business men of the
town, but nothing definite has been
done as yet "in this respect. A town
team, composed of these ex-high
school stars should prove a popular
drawing card in games with like
teams of other towns.
Making Home Modern
Mr. and Mrs. Rex Peters, who
have been making their home in the
house which Mrs. Fred Stock, Sr.,
purchased last spring, moved to the
Mrs. John Bornemeier house. Since
the house of Mrs. Stock was vacated,
she has been having it remodeled
and made modern in every respect,
installing water and, all the modern
conveniences it affords, as well as a
furnace to heat the place. When the
work is completed, Mrs. Stock will
move to town and make her home in
the property.
Mrs. Harry Gillespie Here
Mrs. Harry Gillespie of North
Loup, has been a guest at the home
of her mother and brother, Bryan
McDonald. Mrs. Gayle McDonald has
also been visiting here during the
past week. Sunday, Gayle and the
children came down and visited for
the day, Mrs. McDonald returning
home with them.
Albert Schroader Very Sick
Albert Schroader, who has resided
alone on a farm southwest of Mur
dock, after being in poor health for
some time, became much worse last
Monday morning. He was able to
crawl to his telephone and dialed the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Chirles Kupke.
asking that' a doctor be sent out.
Kupke hastened to the office of
doctor and with him went to
home of , Mr. Schroader, giving
patient medicine and otherwise
providing for his comfort. A nurse
was secured, but as he grew steadilyj
worse he was taken to Bryan Memor
ial hospital in Lincoln, where he
might receive better care and at
tention and where a physician would
be constantly on hand if needed. Ho
continues in a very serious condi
tion. Forming Game Reserve

dock and vicinity have been interest

providing a reserve for birds and
animals and have been instrumental
