L. Neitrel taught the Sunday
school class of Mrs. Harpld Luet
chens in the Louisville Evangelical
church last Sunday.
The Murdock Mercantile company
dressed their window in typical west
era style last Saturday, when they
placed their buffalo meat on sale.
Mrs. Meta MacDiarmid and daugh
ter, Dorothea June, spent last Sun
day at the L. Neitzel home, where
they enjoyed a fine chicken dinner
prepared by Mrs. J. J. Arnold.
John Wood, of Elmwood, assisted
with the work of getting the buffalo
meat cut up and ready for sale at
the Murdock Mercantile store last
Saturday. Mr. Wood is an experienc
ed meat cutter.
The Callahan church just com
pleted installing a blower on their
furnace. This will add greatly to
the comfort of the church, and will
also be U3ed in the summer for air
conditioning the building.
. J' Johansen, Vernon Rikli and Al
bert Rikli, the latter sons of Mr. and
Mrs. Leo Rikli and grandsons of
Mr.' Johansen', are batching over near
Mynard while picking "corn for Roy
Howard. They report the yield as
being very fair there.
O. E. Bradford, of Beatrice, came
to Murdock last Wednesday evening
to spend Armistice day at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Henry A. Tool, his
wife and little daughter, who had
been visiting her parents for the past
week or more, returning home with
him in the evening.
Rev. F. C. Weber left for Kear
ney after the Sunday morning ser
vice to be there for the evening ser
vice. He will bring messages each
night throughout the week, closing
Sunday evening. Earl Weber, his
son, will have charge of all the ser
vices next Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Tool, of
Wahoo, visited in Murdock last Sun
day, being guests at the home of his
parents. Mr. and Mrs. Henry A.
Tool, and also enjoying a visit with
his sister, Mrs. O. E. Bradford, who,
with her little daughter, are visiting
here from their home at Beatrice.
Relic of Other Days
Oscar C. Zink brought a grain
ciadle to town last week, and it
was placed on display as a relic of
olden days when there were no com
bines, harvesters, binders or even
mowing machines. The cradle is 'in
good condition and recalls to mind
the time in our country's history
when men really labored by the
sweat of their brow (and entire body
for that matter) to havest their crop.
Today, a vastly changed condition
exists, as machines cut and thresh
the grain at a single operation.
Looked After Business in South
Henry A. Tool returned Tuesday
from a business trip to Enid. Okla
homa, where he spent several days.
Mr. Tool reports business conditions
in Oklahoma very satisfactory. He
also says that wheat in Kansas and
Oklahoma is looking fine despite the
fact that rainfall there, as here, is
below normal. During his absence,
Mrs. Tool was looking after business
at the bank.
Attended Funeral in Omaha
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Towle and Mrs.
J. E. Mcllugh attended the Frank
Hill funeral in Omaha Tuesday.
Jesse Hill, of Denver, Colo., and
Mrs. J. C. Kline of Fairbury accom
panied Mrs. Mcllugh home after the
funeral and spent a couple of days
visiting her, also at the Fred Towle
and Henry Towle homes.
Averted Fire Loss
; While Frank Melvin was placing a
new shingle roof on the farm prop
erty owned by Mrs. John Scheel near
the Rock. Island tracks between Mur-1
dock and South Bend, he played a
prominent part in saving the house
from destruction by fire. Using up
all the shingles which he had on the
roof he descended to the ground to
secure some more when he perceived
smoke coming from the basement and
upon investigation found the house
to be afire. Assisted by the folks re
Biding in the property they soon had
the blaze extinguished. Had he not
run out of shingles and come down
after more just when he did, the
fire would have undoubtedly gained
great headway in a short time and
consumed the building, with Frank
on top of the roof, confronted with
the problem of getting down safely.
It was a most lucky discovery, both
for himself and for the owner of the
premises.
Father and Son Meeting
Last Friday evening 106 fathers
and sons gathered in the Callahan
church basement for their sixth an
nual banquet. A splendid program,
consisting of special music by the
Callahan orchestra and group sing
ing, led by Martin Straich, with talks
by Otto Reickman, Marion Stock and
H. V. Taylor, superintendent of the
Elmwood schools, all of which were
greatly enjoyed by those present.
Mr. G. Straich was elected chair
man, Emil Reike secretary and Wil-
lard Stock treasurer for the coming
year. The ladies of the church served
a delicious dinner at 6:30.
