PAGE rOUE PLATTSMOUTH SEMf- WEEKLY JOURNAL THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 1937. Murray Harry Noell was in Omaha last Sunday evening visiting relatives and friends. D. C. Rhoden and wife and Tommy Troop were visiting at Nebraska City last Saturday afternoon. W. G. Boedeker was called to Om aha Monday of this week where he had some business matters to look after for the day. Messrs. W. L. Seybolt of Murray and Earl Sipple of Plattsmouth were in Omaha last Monday evening enjoy ing the wrestling match. Mr. and Mrs. Noah Parker enter tained for the day last Sunday at a very fine dinner Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Smock and Alvin Smock. Alfred Beverage of Plattsmouth was a visitors at the home of his bro ther, Fred Beverage and family over near Eight Mile Grove last Sunday. Henry Kirscher has been painting his farm home and with a very fine job which he has been bestowing on the place, the home is surely looking very fine. A. D. Cisney was shelling and de livering corn to the Nehawka Farm ers Grain company Monday afternoon, the same being shelled by the Rich ter Brothers. Mrs. Nannie Rhoden who has been visiting for some time at the home of her sister, Mrs. W. A. Lewis at Coleridge, returned home last Satur day, reporting a very fine visit while away. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bestor were guests for the day last Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Wehrbein. The ladies are sisters, which made the visit the more en joyable. The home of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Warden, north, of Union, was made happy when the stork made a visit there and presented their daughter, now Mrs. Edwin Piles with a very fine baby girl. , , Mesdames Lois Troop and Charles Sherman, both of Lincoln, were visit ing for a time at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Troop. They had been entertaining friends from Iowa and had accompanied them as far as Bible School a Sunday, November 14th "The Christian Minister" r I Tim. 4:5-16; II Tim. 2:1-4. In the study of this lesson, we do not intend to set up a standard for the Christian ministry, nor a criter ion of the Christian minister, but rather to listen to an old and tried servant of Jesus Christ, as he ex horts a young minister, showing him what kind of worker he must be to honor the profession, to be a success ful and efficient minister for the success of the church-depends on that kind of men. Therefore, we look for those characteristics in the Chris tian minister as outlined by Paul; who was anxious to have the young church in competent hands, because ho was about ready for the martyr's crown. The Christian minister is a watch man over his flock; it is his part to warn of approaching danger. Paul sees dark days ahead. (Verses 1 to 7, inclusive). A more awful picture could hardly be imagined than that men on this earth should be the agents of demon forces, dwelling in what we call the underworld, and yet the history of the church, and of the false teach ing that has at times so terribly troubled it, bears testimony to the accuracy of Paul's words in this place.. The Christian minister must be able to discern these false doc trines and warn the church. It may seem a thankless task; but he has heard the voice of God about the shepherds (see Ezekiel 33:1-6; 34: 1-16) and he blows the trumpet and shouts a warning. Having done this, Paul says: Timothy will be a "good minister of Jesus Christ;" he will have the approbation of his Lord. The minister has to know the tactics of the devil, as well as he knows the will of his Master, to be of real ser vice to the church. Then in order to lead the church, he must practice "Godliness" (God-likeness). The rule is that the church is no better than the minister. Verse 8 may lead some people to believe that Godliness holds out a prospect of get ting on in the world as the reward of Christian character. Such prospect is nowhere held out in the New Tes tament. What is promised is "Life," that is the highest blessedness both in this world and the next. The more "abundant life" as Jesus put it. The great motive power in the life of the Christian minister, that which keeps him from fainting in the way, from giving up in dispear. from being overwhelmed with difli- the bridge at Plattsmouth on the way home and following that they visit ed the Troop home and then departed for home in Lincoln. Having completed the picking of the corn of A. W. Wheeler which had been gathered by himself and his son Robert, the latter is now assisting in the gathering of the crop for Mike Kaffenberger. John Urish, who has been so criti cally ill at his home west of Murray and has been kept to his bed for a time, is reported as showing good im provement and is expected to be able to be up and about soon. Thomas Nelson was a visitor in Omaha for the day last Sunday where he was visiting and as well secured a former housekeeper, Mrs. Lillian Crew to keep house for him, she re turning home with Mr. iselson. Ray Creamer and wife took their aunt, Mrs. Laura Johnson of Mynard to Omaha last Saturday where they all visited with Henry Johnson at the University hospital for some time and found the husband in a very ser ious condition. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Hauptman of Lin coln came this "way and picking up Mrs. G. E. Brubacher and daughter, Beverly Ann, went to Auburn where they visited Mr. Charles Blake, an uncle of the ladies, who is in the hospital at Auburn. They also visit ed the parents of the ladies. Rev. Neil Stuart, pastor of the Presbyterian church, and his wife were greatly pleased when they had some friends from owa come over to enjoy the services at the Presbyterian church and visit them. They return ed home in the evening. Entertained at Sunday Dinner. Charles Sporer and wife and their little ones entertained at their farm southwest of Mynard for the day and dinner last Sunday. Guests of the oc casion were Wm. Sporer, father of! Chester Sporer, Martin Sporer and family, living southeast of Murray, as well as Charles Sporer and wife of near Murray. Visit Former Pastor. With the moving of Rev. C. Loyd Shubert, former minister of the Chris tian church in Murray, he had exaet- Lesson Study! By L. Neitzel, Murdock, Neb. culties, from abandoning his work, however difficult it may be, i3 that he is in fellowship with the living God 'with whom some day he will be in glory, vho has appointed him to the supreme work of bringing men to know and accept the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior. Now comes the difficult part for minister, and that is to be an "ex ample" to them that believe, that is a pattern, a model. This may not be as hard to do as it seems "in word, in manner of life, in love, in faith, in purity." The five words describe five stages from the most defined ex ternal to the most defined internal characteristics speech, behavior, love, faith, purity; love as it were belonging equally to the inner and outer self and combining all." A. E. Humphrey. The minister should give himself wholeheartedly to the work (but so should the members also). The read ing of the scriptures in public ser vice should be done as we see in Neh. S:S. Exhorting and teaching are al ways included in every sermon; he first to excite the feelings and impel to action; the second to that of pub lic instruction, to enlighten the un derstanding, by reasoning, either in unfolding or establishing truth or in exposing or refuting error. The min ister who makes no progress, will soon be a back number and finds him self without a charge. Much com plaint can be made about "neglect ing the gifts" God-given talents. But the same is true of the member ship. If Christianity is to take the world for Christ then the older min isters must keep training workers to carry on. This is a great responsibil ity for the church to discharge. The future and the success of the church hinges on these things. Since the Bible school is the nursery of the church, we believe that the teachers should have a "call" just as clear and distinct as the minister, lor it i3 they who lay the foundation of the I future members; no one can butfd on a poor foundation. They must be "faithful," full of faith in what they believe and teach. It is the minister's job to see to it that only faithful, " well equipped and trained workers are entrusted with the delicate and highly important work of teaching others. A great re ward is promised the faithful teach er.. "And they that turn many to righteousness . . . shall shine as the atari;, forever and ever." (Dan. 12: 3). ed a promise from a number of the members to make them a visit and so last Sunday a party of his friends and members of the church here, journey to Benson where they ar rived in time for the morning ser vices. Following that they repaired to the Shubert home for a visit and dinner.. There were there for the oc casion from the Murray congregation Elder and Mrs. C. M. Read, Helen Read, Henry Rice, Mr. and Mrs. Perry Nickles, Mr. and Mrs. Verle Smith and their little daughter and the fam ily. Attended Dediration Services. With the opening of Coryell paVk near Auburn, -there were many people attracted to the very fine program presented in connection with the dedi cation. The site was on the former homstead of the elder Coryells, par ents or Mr. Coryell of the oil corn pan', who with his wife had made this their home when Nebraska was young, they settling there and build ing a cabin which with the lapse of years had gone to decay, with other of the surroundings. This pioneer home was restored by the building of a new log cabin with a concrete floor instead of the orig inal bare earth floor which had been in the original home. Many shelters roofs had also been built, and the old church which had served during the early days which had gone to decay, was restored and a bringe in miniature like the 'Brooklyn bridge, has been built over the small creek. There was a very fine program giv en at the church, a portion of which was attended by a party from Mur ray, C. D. Spangler and wife, Mrs. Margaret Todd and son, Mrs. Cath erine Perry, Everett Spangler and family, John Davis and two daugh ters. There they viewed the large rock which had been shipped from Jerusalem after which a portion of the party drove to Peru where Mrs. Catherine Perry enjoyed seeing the Peru schools which her son, Walter Perry attended several years ago, and which Grandmother Perry desired to see. The Father Flanagan boys band of Omaha was present and favored the assemblage with music for the occasionr Entertain for Dinner. As guests of Mr. and Mrs. O. A. Davis, Mr. and Mrs. William S. Smith accompanied the Davis family who were also accompanied by Grand mother Pittman, made a very fine party who went to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Davis near Union last Sunday. They enjoyed a very fine visit and a very fine dinner. Neighbors Are Neighbors. This is a fact, they are. And un les they are they are not neighbors. Anyway the neighbors of Rev. Neil Stuart, who had his garage down on the far side of the parcel of land where he lives and the neighbors, namely Herman Wohlfarth, Dr. G. H. Gilmore, Roy Gerking, O. A. Davis and Dale Wohlfarth, moved the gar age over near the house where it will be very handy, and had it ready for use last Saturday afternoon.
