PAGE POTO MANLEY NEWS Mrs. Louis Krecklow, who has been in poor health for some time, is reported slightly improved. John A. Stander and wife were en joying a trip to Omaha one day last week, where they were visiting with friends. Ernest rankonin was in Omaha last week and while there bought a Chevrolet truck, which he will use for general farm hauling. Father Hennessey, pastor of St. Patrick's Catholic church, is enjoy ing a vacation in Colorado. He was ther most of last week and will re main the balance of this week. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Mockenhaupt and the children were in Platts mouth Saturday of last week, where they were looking after some busi ness matters and shopping as well. Messrs Clayton and Richard Dow ler, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Dowler, of Manley, were visiting for a number of days last week at the home of relatives at Hooper, Nebras ka. Miss Anna Rauth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Rauth, who is em ployed in Omaha, was a guest at the home of her parents over the week end, returning to her work in the city on Sunday. During the time Father Hennessey is taking his vacation in the west, his housekeeper, Miss Dorvo, is visit ing friends in Rulo. She will return to resume her duties when Father j Hennessey returns home. v Peter A. Mockenhaupt, of near Greenwood, was a visitor in Manley at the home of his parents one day -during the past week. He said the grasshoppers have done considerable damage in that part of the county Richard Deles Dernier of near Elmwood made the purchase of a trailer from Aug Krecklow and in one afternoon with his Model A Ford car delivered to market 717 bushels of wheat which he considers as doing very well. William Newman, Jr., who lives near Ashland, was over and pur chased a trailer from Aug Krecklow, which he had equipped with new tires all around and now feels that he is ready to haul anything and everything ill the farm products line. Arthur Edwards, Jr., of Tilden. is visiting for the week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. II. J. Rauth, he being a cousin of Mr. Rauth. He is stay ing here while his mother, Mrs. Ar thur Edwards, Sr., is visiting with friends and relatives at Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she will remain for an other week. Visited Here from Chicago Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Hill of Chicago arrived in Manley last Sunday even ing and visited a number of days with Mr. and Mrs. Harry Haws and the many friends they have in Man ley. They had expected to go to Clay Center, Kansas, to visit with the Virtus Haws family while here, but thought they would have to return to Chicago sooner than expected and so are putting off their visit to Clay Center until the next time they are out. They did go to Omaha, however, to spend an evening at the home of a niece. Home from the West John Crane and Bobbie McDonald and wife who have been in Colorado, spending a week or more in the mountains, where they found the air cool and refreshing, arrived home last week. En route, they were struck by a truck in Lincoln and somewhat shaken up, while their car was damaged considerably. They were well pleased that no one was seriously injured. Tempting- the Hoppers Herman Rauth and lather, John C. Rauth were busy combining the balance of their wheat and rye last week, finishing up on Wednesday. Herman is putting in a strip of oats which he hopes will prove tempting to the grasshoppers and keep them from going into the corn field as the new oats coming up will be tender and nice for the hoppers and may result in their leaving the corn alone for the present, at least. Won Hundred Dollars John F. Rauth, of York, who is one of the Juniors enrolled in the Fisher body building contest, was first winner in the Junior class and was awarded the sum of $100 for his winnings. This was very pleasing, as he was woiking against numerous odds, but proved clever enough to win. This was the second prize, as the winner in the Senior class was awarded a trip to Detroit with all expenses paid. John is feeling highly elated over his winnings, and right fully so, for it means a lot to be se lected at the top of the list among the Junior, and second in the entire nation anions the adult group. He is a Grandson cf j. c. Rauth and a nephew of Herman Rauth. Does Grasshopper Poison Kill Birds? Condensed from an Article in Western Farm Life Issue of April 15, 1937 "Not infrequently reports of birds being poisoned from grasshopier bait receive considerable publicity. "F. E. Whitehead, of the Oklahoma agricultural college, conducted experiments to establish facts concerning the effect uion birds of arsenic as used in poisoning grasshoppers. "Domestic fowls and quail were confined in pens and left without food for 24 hours. Poisoned bran was then scattered in the pens at the rate of 100 pounds an acre and the fowls were left another 24 hours without other food. No indications of poisoning appeared. From this it was con cluded that birds will not be injured by picking up well scat tered poisoned bran. "In this connection it is important to note that to poison grasshoppers the bait is scattered at the rate of only 20 pounds to an acre. Dr. C. R. Jones of Colorado experiment station found that no ill effects resulted from poisoning hog and chicken pastures at this rate. "Again referring to the Oklahoma experiment: "The arsenic obtained thru eating the poisoned grass hoppers docs not have a cumulative effect, even though the fowls were fed for a period of 66 days. "Nestling robins, and presumably other species of a sim ilar size, can consume as many as 134 poisoned grasshoppers vm still mature normally. "Last summer L. J. Bennett of the" United States Bio logical survey, co-operating with the Iowa State Conserva tion commission, kept more than 600 Iowa farms under ob servation. There were 400 farms moderately to heavily baited with grasshopper poison. Numerous reports of wild and game birds and animals leing poisoned were traced down and only two of the reports had a basis of truth. "On one farm two young English sparrows may have been poisoned by a quantity of bait in a farm yard. On an other farm a few white-footed mice were reported as poisoned where a large amount of bait was scattered around a hay stack. On not a single farm where poison bran had been used recording to directions did Bennett find a domestic or wild animal poisoned. "On the other hand, nearly all birds, except the mourn ing dove and the wood-pcewee included grasshoppers in their diet. Grasshoppers made up from 50 to 90 per cent of the food of the crow, bhtejay and some other birds. "In much of southern and western Iowa, food and cover for game birds and mammals, were destroyed by grasshop pers and the drouth. In iS counties, quail and pheasants had difficulty in finding food and cover this winter. "In no cases have domestic stock been found poisoned by properly scattered grasshopper bait. However, careless ness with bait will frequently cause livestock losses Sacks that have been used for poison bait should be burned, since they carry a large amount of poison. It is not necessary to use more than 20 pounds of wet bait to the acre. Bait should nei-cr be scattered in lumps."
