PLATTSMOUTH SEMI -WEEKLY JOURNAL
MONDAY, JULY 19, 1937.
MANLEY NEWS
Last Tuesday evening Mr. and Mrs.
Ralph Keckler were guests at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Rau.
Mrs. Earl Schafer of Falls City,
who came to attend the funeral of
Mrs. Charles Philpot spent a short
time in Mauley at the Eli Keckler
home.
During the time John Crane and
party were in the west on their vaca
tion, Fred Lawrensen was looking
after business at the Manley lum
ber yard.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bergman were
called to Lincoln on Monday of last
week where they had some business
matters to look after and as well
were .visiting with friends.
The children at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Harry O'Brien have been
having a siege of whooping cough,
and during the time the mother of
Mrs. O'Brien has been at the home
of her daughter, assisting in the
care of the children during their ill
ness. Harry Haws and family were en
joying a visit last Sunday from a
brother of Mr. Hawes, who makes
his home at Clay Center, Kansas,
where Mr. Hawes himself formerly
resided. The brother enjoyed his visit
so much that he decided to remain
for most of the week.
Miss Rena Christensen, sister of
Mrs. Herman Rauth, came down
from her home in Omaha for the 4th
of July holiday and enjoyed a visit
with her many friends here, being
taken back to the metropolis Sunday
by Mr. and Mrs. Rauth, who also
visited friends there for the day.
Faye Kestard, of Atchison, Kan
sas, was a visitor in Manley for a
number of days last week, visiting
with his brother-in-law, David Ilrann
and other friends in Manley. As he
ii a carpenter and accustomed to
work, he could not refrain from get
ting out his carpenter tools and do
ing some odd jobs for his brother-in-law.
Miss Clara Keckler, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Eli Keckler, who has
been making her home in Denver for
some time and who visited the par
ents here for a week, upon the com
pletion of her vacation period de
parted last week for her home in the
west, being employed by one of the
large cafes in the mile high city of
the Rockies.
Attended Funeral of Relative
Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Rauth were
in Omaha Friday of last week, where
they went to attend the funeral of
the late Stephen Schwenker who died
suddenly in Louisville and who was
buried in Omaha that day. The de
ceased man was a relative of Mr.
Rauth.
Visited at Fred Fleischman's
Last Sunday guests at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Fleischman in
cluded John Fleischman, of Louis

able reunion and an excellent dinner
was served.
Held Funeral Here Tuesday
The funeral of Mrs. Merocha, a
resident of Sarpy county and mother
of Mrs. Joseph Hochel, a former resi
er resident here, was held last Tues
day and was largely attended. Mr.
and Mrs. Edward Donat, Sr., came
over from Plattsmouth for the fun
eral, having been long time friends
of the family.
Took Guests to the 'Ak' Show
While the Misses Lois and Ange
line Meyers and their friends were
here from Toledo visiting with Miss
Teresa Rauth and the R. Bergman
family, they were taken by Miss
Margaret Bergman and Naomi Wilte
to Omaha, where the entire party at
tended the Ak-Sar-Ben den show on
lest Monday night.
Enjoyed Mountain Climate
During the hot, oppressive weath
er which has caused many to seek
the shade, it occurred to John Crane
and to Mr. and Mrs. Robert McDon
ald that nice cooling breezes are
blowing in the mountains of the
west, and so they fitted out their
-car for the trip and left for Colo
rado. They spent about ten days
out there and found the weather as
delightfully cool as it had been pic
tured to them and the scenery most
beautiful.
They returned home a few days
ntrn browned by mountain breezes
and the hot mid-day sun which
shone down on them.
Vacationing in the West
When Miss Teresa Rauth was in
Toledo, Ohio, some months ago, due
to the serious illness and death of
her grandmother, she met a number
of relatives whom she had not prev
iously known personally. Just this
week, two of her cousins, the Misses

Making It Harder Than Ever
By TRVEM S. COBB
THERE was a complaint in a small village a few miles from
"L Edinburgh regarding the trolley fare. For four miles into tha
city the company charged a shilling. This, in the opinion of many of
the villagers, was too much.
A delegation was chosen to visit the offices of the line and make
representation in favor of a lower rate. The arguments advanced
by the plenipotentiaries prevailed. The company decided that hereafter
six tickets might be had for the former price.
The townspeople returned "home rejoicing, but there was at least
one of their fellow-citizens who did not share in the view that a
wife steo had been taken. This was an elderly gentleman renowned
for his frugality even in a community where frugal folk are common.
"It's all dam' foolishness," he declared. "Now we've got to walk
to town six times instead of four-r times to save a shillin'"
(American News Features, Inc.)
Lois and Angeline Meyers, with a
lady friend were enjoying a visit
here at the home of Miss Rauth and
at the Bergman home, also being
cousins of Mr. Bergman. At the con
clusion of their brief stay here, the
party went on to Fargo, North Da
kota, where they visited at the
home of Frank Bergman, an uncle.
From there they hastened home, as
their vacation time passed all too
quickly to suit them and they have
to be back to work this (Monday)
morning.
Altar Society Meets
Mrs. Walter Mockenhaupt and
Mrs. John C. Rauth entertained for
the Altar society of St. Patrick's
church on Wednesday, July 14th, at
the home of Mrs. Rauth.
Eight tables of pinochle players
bad a merry time despite the heat.
Prizes were awarded to Mrs. Ralph
Welte for high score and to Mrs.
Henry Johnson for low.
Delicious ice cream, angel food
cake and iced tea were served at
the close of the afternoon.
Mrs. Carl Zaiser, Mrs. J. J. Cul
len and Miss Phyllis Straub, of
Avoca, were among those present.
It is planned to hold these parties
each month at the home of members.
CARDINAL SEWERS
The Cardinal Sewers held
5th meeting at the home of
their
their
leader, Miss Louise Rishel on July
14.
The meeting wa3 called to order by
the president. The secretary called
the roll and we answered it by nam
ing colors we could wear best.
Our closet accessories and slips
were looked over.
We received our 4-II club pins of
which we are very proud.
At the close of the meeting very
appetizing refreshments were served
by the hostess.
Our next meeting will be held at
the home of Babe Cloidt at 9 a. m.
July 21st.
MARGARET FRICKE,
Club Reporter.
"JOLLY COOKERS"
The "Jolly Cookers" met at the
home of Bonnie Jean Walters July
15th with full attendance. The meet
ing was called to order by the presi
dent. The secretary read the min
utes and called the roll to which we
answered by naming something we
liked best about the 4-H work.
Some of the answeres were as fol
lows: Something to do and you're not
playing all the time through the
summer; Association with oth,er chil
dren; Learning better ways of how
to cook; Liking to work; Learning
better manners and liking to work.
Instead of meeting at a home next
time we art- going to have a picnic.
Our sandwiches will be made accord
ing to 4-H recipes. Different foods
were brought by some of the girls
and the judges pronounce them good.
Mrs. Walters showed her appre
ciation of 4-H club work by giving
the girls an attractive and tasty
lunch. Her daughter, Bonnie Jeau:
and Delores Ruse helped to serve.

Wabash News
Bert Barden was looking after
business matters in Plattsmouth last
Monday, being accompanied to the
county seat by Mrs Barden.
Warren T. Richards was called to
Omaha a few days ago to look after
some business and reported that the
bottom lands in Sarpy county were
overflowed with water . and the
streams greatly swollen from the re
cent rains.
John Woods, in the absence of road
work to keep his trucks busy with
the hauling of sand and gravel, has
found much work to do delivering
wheat from the farms to the Wabash
elevator.
Makes Purchase of Home
Parker Otte, who has been the
owner of the property in which Bert
Barden and the family have been
living, sold the same to Mr. Barden
a few days ago. This is the build
ing which, in the more populous days
of Wabasu was the hall of the Mod
ern Woodmen of America. Lated, as
that organization diminished in num
bers, the property passed into the
hands of Mr. Otte and now becomes
the property of Mr. Barden, who is
making a home out of it.
Lightning Burns Tree
A cottonwood tree which has not
thrived so well during recent years,
and which stood alongside the road
near the home of William Voigt,
finally gave up the "battle against
the prolonged drouth and died last
year, but was left standing. Mon
day evening during the electrical
storm, the tree was struck by light
ning and unlike the burning bush of
Moses' day, this pne was consumed
by the flames.
Received Huch Wheat Here
The Wabash elevator has been a
very lively place during the harvest
and threshing season, which is not
yet over, for much remains to be
threshed and marketed. However,
some twenty cars of wheat have been
shipped from the local elevator, thus
bringing in return a good deal of
hard cash, some of which, at least,
is finding its way into the cash reg
isters of local business firms, while a
lot of it goes to pay off past indebt
edness incurred during the lean de
pression and drouth years. It will
take some time for the farmers to
get back to normal even with good
crops and a fair price,
The Ladies Enjoy Visit
The Ladies Aid of the town of
Wabash, the most active organiza
tion for good now existent in the
community, were meeting with one
or" their members, Mrs. Frank Mar
shall, of Weeping Water, on last
Wednesday. Much work was accom
plished and a social hour enjoyed as
well.
PCC Boys are Busy
A number of the CCC camp boys
from Weeping Water have been do
ing some much needed work on a
stream which runs from the farm of
J. Wr. Gamble, formerly owned by
the McCrorey estate, northwest of
Wabash, where the rains have cut
deeply across the highway and im
periled the bridge as the stream
passed to the lands on the farm
where J. E. Golden lives.
Stone was secured from the foun
dation of the old elevator east of
the highway, which has been torn
down and the work of conservation
of the soil and prevention of erosion
has been undertaken, as the place
has been showing a tendency to
wash badly. The stopping of this
washing and erosion will save much
valuable soil.
STANDS BY LOVER
KOKOMO, Ind., July 17 (UP)
Freda Maddox, husky school girl, to
day challenged anyone to break up
her marriage to Norman Cohnee, 17.
Through the screened front door of
her father-in-law's home she declared
"Our marriage is sacred and I love
Norman. Just let anyone try to annul
our marriage."
The father-in-law, Frank Cohnee,
said he had no objection to the mar
riage, in fact he was "quite delight
ed." He gave the young people a
room last night.
