MONDAY, JULY 12, 1937.
Elmwood News
Miss Hazel Olsen was a visitor in
Omaha over the Fourth, in company
with her sister, both enjoying their
visit in the metropolis.
Harry Allen, the painter, has been
busy during the past week assisting
with the changing of the bank build
ing for use of the postoffice.
Mrs. Grant Ehlers, who has not
been in good health of late, was
taken to an Omaha hospital for
treatment during the past week.
Mrs. Verna Olsen and daughter,
Dorothy Miller, visited friends at
Louisville over the Fourth, where
they enjoyed a very pleasant time
with friends.
Henry Mullens was a visitor in
Omaha one day last week, called
there to look after business mat
ters, and also enjoyed a visit with
friends while there.
Miss Muriel Wade of Weeping
Water is assisting at the Fleiseh
niau cafe, as Mr. Fleischman has ac
iepted an offer to get out in the
harvest tields and assist with the
garnering of the present very fair
wheat crop.
Henry Crozier of Weeping Water
was in El in wood a good portion of
this week superintending the work
of changing the building formerly
occupied 'by the Elmwood State bank
to suit the convenience of tlx? new
Elmwood postoffice.
Funeral of Mrs. Deles Dernier
The funeral of Mrs. William Deles
Dernier, who passed away Tuesday
morning of last week was held on
Thursday, with interment in the
Kim wood cemetery. The sermon was
preached by Rev. Homer F. Fintell.
pastor of the Methodist church, as
Kev. Baker. Christian pastor bad just
accepted a call to go to Dakota and
moved away. An account of the life
of Mrs. Deles Dernier appeared in
last Thursday's issue of the Journal.
Mrs. Nickel at Hospital
Mrs. Jennie Nickel, who has been
in poor health was taken to the
liryan Memorial hospital in Lincoln
for observation and treatment. It is
possible she may have to undergo an
operation, but her friends hope she
may be spared from that ordeal.
It was found necessary to give her a
blood transfusion shortly after her
arrival there, as her condition was
quite serious.
Busy with Harvest
At the farm of Mrs. Charles Buell,
harvest was on in real earnest last
week. The combine was started on
Monday evening, as soon as the ma
chine could be secured, and contin
ued throughout the night and the
following day until the work was
done. The yield was very satisfac
tory and the quality of the grain
good.
Home from Vacation
Kev. Homer Fintell, pastor of the
Elmwood Methodist church, and
wife, who recently went to Mil
waukee to be present at and the
former to officiate the marriage cere
mony of their daughter, after e very
.pleasant vacation visit in that part
of the country, arrived home about
a week ago and Kev. Fintell has
resumed his pastoral duties.
Spend Fourth Here
Prof. L. S. Clements, of Lincoln,
representative of the Smith-Hughes
school and state inspector of the
Agricultural college, together with
his family, and Sanford Clements,
president of the Teachers Training
school at Peru, also accompanied by
his family, were guests at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. I). 1. Clements last
Sunday, July 4th.
To Have Fine Postoffice
.The old bank building, which was
recently purchased by Henry Crozier
and Knude Jensen, of Weeping
Water, is being entirely remodelec?
and will be made into a fine up-to-date
postoffice room. The old bank
furniture has been removed and new
equipment is being installed for the
postoffice. This building is located
in the central portion of town and
provides an excellent place for the
postoffice. Mrs. Carl Schneider, the
capable postmistress, will find this
a much more pleasant place in which
to look after the business of receiv
ing and dispatching mail.
Fretty Sick for a Few Days
Norville D.v Hot h well, the grocer,
sho was ill about a month ago, but
recovered and resumed his work, was
again stricken the past week and
was confined to his bed a number of
days, but is now reported as some

Why They Called It a Bug-House
By IRVIN S. COBB
IE CHIEF physician came up
avlum, slapped him on the back, and said in comiortinp accents.
"Well, old man, you're all right. I've just pronounced you cured

of all the delusions which afflicted you. You can run along now and write
word to your people that you'll be back home in two weeks as good;
as new."
The patient departed gaily to write his letter. He had finished
it and sealed it, but as he was licking the stamp it slipped through his
fingers to the floor, and fell on the back of a cockroach that was passing
and stuck there. The patient hadn't seen the cockroach what he did ;
see was his escaped postage stamp zig-zagging over the floor to the
baseboard, and following a crooked track up the wall and along the ,
ceiling overhead. In depressed silence he tore up the letter he had just j
written and dropped the pieces to the floor.
"Two weeks! Hell!" he said. "I won't ever get out of this place.1
I'm worse off than I was when they brought me here."
(American Novrs Features, Inc.)
weather and exceedingly hot winds,
which looked like it would damage
the small grain, the wheat which has
been harvested and deliver to the
local grain dealer is showing up
pretty well. Some" have reported as
high as 4 0 bushels to the acre, a
considerable number of fields have
averaged 30 or more and of course
some have gone as low at 15. But
in all there is going to be a good deal
of wheat with plenty to eat and
some to spare.
Working in Harvest . Field
George W. Blessing, proprietor off
the Elmwood Leader-Echo, sensing
the shortage of help in the harvest
fields, went to the farm of Mrs.
Blessing near Murdock, which is be
ing farmed by Joseph F. Gustin, and
put in the day last Monday pitching
wheat bundles in order that the
grain might be taken care of. It was
a rather strenuous way to observe
the Fourth, but George came through
with flying colors despite the fact
he has not clone any of this kind of
work for a long time.
Returned Home Last Week
Mrs. Elmer Bain, daughter of A.
W. Neihart. who was here the past
ten days disposing of the stock of
goods which Mr. Neihart had on
hand when he concluded to dis
continue business here, returned to
her home at Wood Kiver, last week.
The stock of goods was disposed of
at auction, bringing fair prices.
Mr. Neihart is now located in the
jewelry, watch repair and optical
business at Wood Kiver, where he is
doing very well.
Mrs. Bain was a guest at the homo
of Mr. and Mrs. George Nickel be
fore her departure.
Spends Fourth in Elmwood
As a proper manner in which to
spend the Fourth of July, the fam
ily of V 15. Jones, of Nebraska City,
came to Elmwood and were guests
for the day at the home of Mr, and
Mrs. Harry Williams. Carl Schneid
er, hi.sband of our Elmwood postmis
tress, was also able to come for the
day, and a very pleasant, safe and
sane Fourth was enjoyed by all.
Bus Service Discontinued
The buses which have served the
people along the Union-Lincoln line
of the Missouri Pacific railroad have
been withdrawn from service, leav
ing the mail and passenger business
to the trains. This changes the de
livery of mail at the Elmwood post
office and other towns along the
line, a condition to which patrons of
the office will have to adjust them
selves. Meets with Accident
While Mr. and Mrs. Win. Stuben
dick were returning from a very
pleasant day spent at Syracuse, where
they had gone to celebrate the 4th
of July last Monday, their auto went
into a ditch and was overturned. Mr.
Stubendick suffered a severe gash in
one of his legs, while his wife had
one of her ankles badly bruised, ne
cessitating their being taken back to
Syracuse for medical and surgical
attention. After being treated there
they were able to continue on home.
Both are feeling quite sore, but their
injuries are not considered danger
ous. TO ATTEND CONFERENCE
Henry Robert llerold, represent
ative of the Richard Hudnut com
pany in the states of Oklahoma, Ar
kansas and Louisiana, will be here
Monday for a short visit with his
mother, Mrs. Henry llerold. He is en
route to Chicago where he will attend
a regional conference of managers
of the mid-western group of states.

AVCCA NEWS
Henry Polentire, a painter of Otoe,
was looking after business matters
in Avoca last Tuesday.
Fred Marquardt and wife enjoyed
the 4th of July at the home of
friends in Nebraska City.
Jack Betts arrived at his 60th
birthday last Tuesday, July Gth, cele
brating the event very quietly.
In the report of yields of wheat
near Avoca, the farm of Henry Straub
is credited with growing some 35
bushels of very fine wheat to the
acre.
In the returns on the Harry II.
Marquardt farm, the wheat averaged
20 bushels per acre. The combine
was driven by his son, John Mar
quardt. Elmer Johnson, of Weeping Wat
er was looking after business mat
ters in Avoca last Tuesday afternoon
and was calling on his friend, Fred
Marquardt.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Freeman and
the kiddies were enjoying a visit at
Nebraska City last Sunday, July 4th.
It was the occasion of the parents'
tenth wedding anniversary.
Henry Jourgensen and Jack Betts
were called to Omaha last Saturday
to look after business matters, mak
ing the return trip via Plattsmcmth.
where they visited friends for a
short time.
Had Laugh on Us '
Just as we were leaving Avoca
last week and had started our auto,
we heard a loud explosion similar to
a tire blowing out arid for an in
stant we had visions of mending a
tire in the hot sun, but as the car
proceded we found that some of the
folks at the elevator had only thrown
a fire cracker under our car to give
us a thrill, which they did very ad
mirably indeed.
Sister Dies as Result of Fall
Mrs. Florence Durham of Avoca
was shocked to receive a message ad
vising her of the death of her young
er sister, Mary, of Mondamin. Iowa,
which occurred in Omaha, where she
had been visiting at the home of an
other sister.
The deceased lady had made a
misstep in the dark, being precipi
tated head long down a flight of
seventeen steps, suffering the in
juries that caused her death.
Funeral and burial were held at
her late home at Mondamin. Mrs.
Durham was not able to attend on
account of delicate health. Clarence
and George Durham went over for
the funeral, which was held last
Tuesday.
Work on Bridge Progressing
The new bridge on the O street
highway just west of the Missouri
Pacific tracks is to be 57 SOet in
length allowing sufficient to carry
two lines of traffic a great im
provement over the obi narrow
bridge at that point. A total of 1,500
sacks of cement and four carloads of
sand and gravel will' be required in
the erection or the new bridge. The
Keim Construction company of Te
eumseh has the contract for this
work.
In addition to the new bridge at
this point, the hill to the east is to
be cut down some ten feet, while a
cut of some four ' feet will be made
in the hill to the west, with a grade
seven feet higher than the present
bridge floor level, thus making a
very great improvement in the ap
proaches to this bridge that has long
been a menace to traffic.
