bers of the jury panel drawn for the
November district court term, which
vas postponed due to illness of the

During the past week, Walter
Mockenhaupt. V. A. Moekenhaupt ot
Alvo and P. A. Mockenhaupt of
Greenwood were all celebrating the
passing of their birthday anniversar
ies. Having them all come within a
week is very nice, as they can cele
brate the passing of same together.

Conducts Services at Arago
The Rev. J. J. Hoffman, parish
priest of the Ft. Patrick's Catholic
church, was at Arago. located in the
southeastern part of Richardson
county, where he was conducting a
thirteen hour service for the church
there.
Moving- to Omaha
Michae l I loner, who held a sale last
Monday, moved to Omaha later in
the week and will make their home
there in the future. Harold Kreck
low took a truck load of household
goods to Omaha for Mr. Honor.
Taken Suddenly 111
Uncle C. E. Mockenhaupt was a
guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Tleo. Harms and was taken from
there to his home, where he has been
confined since. He was extremely ill
for some time and was kept to his
bed. His three sons were there to
isit the father, John, Walter and
A. V. Mockenhaupt of Alvo.
Mr. Mockenhaupt is being cared for
Ly his daughter. Miss Sue Mocken
haupt, who is a graduate nurse.
Attending Banquet in Lincoln

ception and dinner at the Lincoln
hotel Saturday of last week, extend
ing an invitation to their customers
i nd friends to come and enjoy the
gathering. Mr. and Mrs. R. Berg
man, who have long been customers
of the firm were in attendance, being
accompanied by Oscar Dowler and
wife as gCJests. Miss Margaret Berg
man also accompanied the party.
One of the unique features of the
party was the giving of a new crisp
S3 bill each hour to some one of the
quests and in one of the drawings
Oscar Dowler came out lucky with a
V spot.
Arrival of Son
At the home of the maternal grand
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Shoehan
in Manley. the stork left a fine baby
boy last week for Mr. and Mrs. Ray
Reynolds. The father is working in
the Kansas oil fields and the mother
has been staying here at the home of
the parents for some little time. The
arrival brought joy to both parents
and grandparents.
Charles Lovell, former Cass coun
ty resident and the fathVr of Walter
Lovell of Weeping Water, passed
away lust Sunday, February 7, at his
home near Chappell, Nebr., where he
had resided since moving from Cass
county several years ago. He had
been ill for some time, suffering from
a severe attack of pneumonia. He was
SO years of age. During the period
of his illness, his wife was in Omaha
where she underwent treatment and
an operation for the removal of a
cataract from her eye.

at Chappell last Tuesday.

ton as a homemaker and upon the
boyhood of Lincoln. Eloise Cole play
ed two piano solos. Mrs. Chester
Wiles, dressed in old fashioned cos
tume, sang "Old Fashioned Girl" and
"Second Minuet."
Guests were served at a long table
decorated in red and white. Silver
candlestick holding red candles and
silver service were used. The Amer
ican flag and large pictures of Lin
coln and Washington were used on
the walls. Mrs. Myron Wiles poured
the coffee. Hostesses for the meet
ing were Mrs. W. T. Richardson,
Mrs. John Wooders, Mrs. Herman
Weis, and Mrs. C. L. Wiles.

a pinochle party last evening. Miss

Degree of Honor
Mrs. Charles Manners entertained
! the Degree of Honor at her home
yesterday afternoon. The ladies play
ed pinochle. The valentine moiif was
used in decoration.

the guests played progressive Hearts.
Golden Rod Study Club
Mrs. Kd Spangler led the lesson at
the Golden Rod Study club on meats.
She explained the different cuts and
methods of preparing them. Roll call
was answered by meat recinies. Mrs.
Charles Barnard accompanied for the
singing. Mrs. Everett Spangler en
tertained the club at her home. Mrs.
Charles Barnard and Mrs. John Wood
ers were assistant hostesses.

Summary of the year's work was
taken up at the meeting of the P. E.
O. yesterday afternoon at the home
of Mrs. Clement Woster. Mrs. Mar
jorie Lohnes, president, read the
yearly report. By-laws of the organ
ization were discussed. 20 attended
the meeting.
Young People's Party
The young people's class of the
Christian church met at the church
parsonage for a valentine party last
evening. Progressive Hearts were
played and Rev. J. W. Taenzler led
games.
Social Meeting
Mrs. Philip Hirz entertained Circle
& of the Presbyterian fsderation at
a social gathering Thursday after
noon. Mrs. George Lushinsky, Mrs.
Ray Larson and Mrs. Fred Sharp
nack were also on the entertainment
committee.
Episcopalian Ladies
Mrs. Frank Cummins was hostess
to the Auxiliary and St. Mary's Guild
at the meetin'g at her home Thursday
afternoon. Plans were made for a
card party to be held March 31. The
ladies also decided to hold services
at the library each Friday evening
during lent.
Cass county nas no bended in
debtedness, as, like the state,. we
have paid cash for our hard sur
faced roads and other improve
ments as we went.

D. C. West spent yesterday in
Plattsmouth on business.
Mrs. Win. Schinidtman. Jr., is ill
at her home with the flu.
Mrs. L. W. Egenberger was a busi
ness visitor in Omaha Tuesday.
Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Johnson had
as a guest last night, their nephew,
Morris Johnson of Oakland, Nebr.
Robert Beal, who has been out of
school during the past three weeks
with flu, was able to return yester
day. Mrs. R. W. Clement and Mrs. Henry
McMaken of Omaha were Platts
mouth visitors the first part of this
week.
Miss Arlene Rager, who is a
teacher in Elm Creek, Nebraska, was
a guest at the Frady home for the
week end.
Attorney C. E. Tefft, of Weeping
Water, was in the city today for a
few hours attending to some business
in the district court.
Mrs. Walter Farris is at Nebraska
City, where her mother, Mrs. J. M.
Duncan, is very seriously ill, Mrs.
Farris assisting the other members
of the family in her care.
. George Dates of Weeping Water
was here Wednesday and while in
the city was a caller at the Journal
office to renew his subscription to
the semi-weekly edition of the paper.
Miss Birdie Mae Johnson brought
the pupils of her room from the
Columbian school to the postoffice for
a visit this morning. The children
have been studying the postal sys
tem and came to see it in actual
operation.

day in Lincoln attending a general
staff meeting.
Maxine Graves has been unable to
attend school during the past few
days because of illness.
Miss Lillian White went to Omaha
this morning to spend the week-end
with her sister. Miss Florence White.
H. B. Evner of Lincoln, adjustor
for the associated indemnity Co., was
a Plattsmouth visitor yesterday noon.
Miss Florence Beighley returned
to her school duties this morning.
She has been out of school because of
illness.
Clyde Graves has been ill for sev
eral days, but is now back at work
at his grocery store in the Mullen
Ma rket.
A marriage license was issued to
Kenneth K. Haith of Table Rock and
Miss Golda Kuiiz of Elmwood at the
court house yesterday. Miss Kunz is
the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George
Kunz of Elmwood.
Mrs. Otto Marek. who has been
serioiisly ill at her home in Detroit,
is reported to be getting along line.
Mrs. Oscar Gapen is still in Detroit
with her daughter.

Sharron Lynn, born this morning.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Herboldsheimer
of Potter, Nebr., were guests last
night at the home of their niece, Mrs.
Robert Jacobs.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Tunnel are
leaving this evening for King City,
Mo., where they will visit Mr. Tun
nel's grandfather who is critically
ill.
Attorney Jack Devoe of Lincoln
was here today to look after some
matters at the court house and also
to visit with his brother, L. S. Devoe
and familv.
PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IS
HOSTESS AT DAY OF PRAYER

Mrs. L. O. Minor acted as general
chairman at the Day of Prayer ser
vices held in the Fellowship room of
the Presbyterian church yesterday
afternoon. The subject discussed dur
ing the afternoon was the missionary
work among the young people, both
in this country and in foreign lands.
Women's Christian Colleges of the
Orient were discussed by Mrs. L. S.
Devoe. Mrs. J. M. Roberts took the
topic of The Religious Work Direc
tors in the U. S. Indian Schools. Mrs.
Ralph Wehrbein, told of the schools
and activities of the children of
migrant laboring families in this
country.
Mrs. J. R. Reeder directed the
choir. She also sang a special num
ber. Mrs. H. F. Goos accompanied for
the music of the afternoon. Frayers
were offered by various members of
the St. Paul's Evangelical, Methodist,
St. Luke's Episcopalian, and the
Presbyterian churches. Scripture
readings were also given. One hun
dredwomen attended the worship.

Henry Mollen, the shoemaker, was
transacting business in Omaha last
Friday and Saturday.
J. P. Cobb, Elmwood banker, was
called to Omaha Tuesday of last
week, where he had business matters
to look after.
Deputy Sheriff Cass Sylvester of
Plattsmouth was a visitor in Elm
wood Tuesday afternoon, coming to
serve some papers.
Rev. and Mrs. Ernest Baker were
in Lincoln last Sunday, going to
visit Miss May Saxton, but on their
arrival there found her so ill that no
one was allowed to see her.
Among the jurors selected from
Stove Creek precinct are Clarence
Bucknell, Herman Kuehn and Ralph
Creamer, while J. F. Gustin was
named from Elmwood precinct.
Joseph Johnson and Walter Ply
bon were at Plattsmouth Friday of
last week, where they attended a
sale of bank property, including that
of the defunct Elmwood State Bank.
James Stuart was called to Platts
mouth Monday of last week, where
he had business matters to look af
ter, including the payment of his
taxes and securing of his automobile
license for 1937.
Mrs. II. G. Morris, mother of Mrs.
Jacob Sterner, and George Morris
aiifl wife, the former a brother of
Mrs. Sterner, were all guests at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Sterner Sun
day. The visitors reside in McCook.
Harry A. Williams was taken sud
denly ill last Sunday while visiting
at the home of Mr. and Mrs. L. F.
Langhorst. He was taken home and
placed in bed and while he is still
very ill, it is thought that he is
slightly better.
Mrs. Joseph Johnson, who has
been visiting at the home of her
daughter. Mrs. Jensen, north of
Aoca and who was taken very sick
while there, delaying her return
home, was sufficiently recovered to
come home lust Saturday ftnd is con
tinuing to improve. '
Stanley Wood, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Charles E. Wood, who was employed
by the state in the vicinity of Clear
water last summer, left a few days
ago for that point to visit friends,
and more especially a certain one
with whom he became well acquaint
ed during his stay at Clearwater.
Appearance Improved
The Elmwood Leader-Echo, pub
lished by George W. Blessing and his
son, George, Jr., presents a greatly
improved appearance as a result of
the removal of advertising matter
fiom the front page. More and more,
newspapers are taking steps to elinii
i.ate ads from their front pages, giv
ing all space on that page to news.
Messrs. Blessing are to be compli
mented on the improved appearance.
Held Quilting Bee
Mrs. Helen Fleisehmann entertain
ed a number of her lady friends last
Tuesday afternoon at the farm home
of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Fleisch
niali. Quilting was one of the fea
tures of the afternoon. Guests were
Mesdames Lucy Lyla, Charles West,
Ralph Creamer and Lule Horton.
Met with Severe Injury
While George Hall was assisting
with the sawing of wood at the home
of James Barton north of town and
attempted to push some sawdust that
had piled up under the circular saw
away vith his foot, he had four of
his toes badly lacerated by the fast
moving saw and the shoe nearly
stripped from his loot. The injury
was dressed by the family doctor and
he is getting along as well as could
be expected. It is hoped and believ
ed that the toes will grow back in
place, so that he will not have to
have any of them amputated, but the
experience has been a most painful
one and will keep him from work for
a long time to come.
Died at Lincoln Tuesday
Miss May Saxton, who was staying
at the home of her sister, Mrs. Harry
Walsh at UniversitjJ'lace, became
seriously ill a number of weeks ago
and was taken to a Lincoln hospital,
where she passed away last Tuesday.
The body was brought to Elmwood
that same day and the funeral was
l tld later at the Christian church
here, with interment in the Elmwood
cemetery. The funeral service was
conducted by Rev. Ernest E. Baker
pastor of the church, of which Miss
Saxton had been a member.
In company with her mother, the
deceased had been making her home
for some time at that of the sister in
University Place.
The many Elmwood friends of the
family will extend their sympathy to
the mother, sister and brother, the
latter being Howard Saxton, Omaha
attorney.

DIES AT OMAHA
Mrs. Christina Ellithorpe, 40, a
former resident here, died Friday
evening at an Omaha hospital where
she has been for the past several
days under treatment. Mrs. Elli
thorpe had been here suffering from
pneumonia at the home of her
brother, William F. Evers, and suffer
ing a relapse was taken to the hos
pital. Friday she suffered a heart
attack and died in a short time.
The deceased lady was born at
Plattsmouth, August 4, 1896, a
daughter of Peter and Mary Evers
and made her home in this city until
191 C when she removed to Council
Bluffs and where she has since made
her home.
Mrs. Ellithorpe is survived by a
son, Robert Low of Omaha, a step
son, Harold Ellithorpe, of Sidney,
Nebraska, the parents, of this city,
one brother, William F. Evers of this
city, two sisters, Mrs. Fred Verhule
of Missouri Valley and Mrs. Marie
Beckman, of Council Bluffs.
The funeral will be at Council
Bluffs in charge of the Jackson fun
eral home of that city and the inter
ment will be at the Council. Bluffs
cemetery beside the husband.
