SUPPORT THE RED CROSS
From Friday's Daily '
Yesterday a man was visiting
homes in Plattsmouth asking for a
job. He has no work. There are seven
children in the family. Although not
skilled, he is willing to try.
Cass county and the city of Platts
mouth have many such families. The
fathers want to work but are not
able to find jobs. This season of the
year finds a slackening of the in
come which was barely sufficient dur
ing the months in which there was a
steady flow.
If sickness or disaster should strike
these people, they have no reserve
upon which they might draw. Their
only hope is in some organization
which takes it upon itself to lend a
helping hand. The Red Cross is one
of those organizations which is lend
ing a helping hand to such families.
The workers in the institution are
donating their time all they ask is
enough for supplies and the support
of the people in backing up their ef
forts.
Let's get behind the Red Cross
Each year finds the Red Cross giving
relief in an average of SO disasters.

MOTOR GROUP COMMENDED
Detroit. The American Automo
mobile association opened its annual
convention here with a message from
President Roosevelt, who commended
the motoring group for its help "in
making new drivers in the years
ahead more proficient and more re
sponsible." Thomas P. Henry of Detroit, AAA
president, advocated an eight point
legislative program, which he term
ed a "bill of rights to assure full and
free use of the automobile with the
maximum of safety and the maximum
of economy."
The proposed legislation which
Henry Ford urged -the 300 delegates
to submit to state legislatures and
tho national congress, called for:
"Roads suitable for the needs of mod
ern motor traffic, fair budgeting of
road costs, free passage at state borr
dors, proper sanitation and decent
appearance along the roadside, op
position to federal and local en
croachment in the mtoor tax field,
proper distribution of motor tax rev
enue among various local jurisdic
tions, stopping of diversion and set
ting up of official 'safety authorities'
each of the states."

MEDICAL NOTES
Sponsored by Cass County
Medical Society
Remains of the world's largest in
sect, a dragonfly which lived 150,
000,000 years ago, has been found
as a fossil near Elmo, Kansas, by
Dr. Frank M. Carpenter, of Harvard.
The insect measured nearly two and
a half feet long.
Insurance companies consider over
weight a serious disability. The most
common causes of over-weight are
too much food and too little exercise.
Nostrums for reduction of weight are
usually dangerous.
There are many kinds of "rheu
matism." The main varieties are in
flammatory or rheumatic fever, the
chronic condition known as arthritis,
and muscular rheumatism. Rheu
matic fever is an infectious disease
more commonly found in children
and young people. It is rarely fatal,
but quite serious because the germ
causing it may attack the heart.
Arthritis make the joints stiff, swol
len and deformed. It seldom kills peo
ple, but if not checked, causes great
suffering and interference with work.
Muscular rheumatism usually yields
to rest, heat and massage, but chronic
cases may refuse to yield until the
cause is discovered and removed.
Hearts of animals, transplanted to
other animals, have kept on beating
for three months or more, according
to a report rendered the Zoological
Society of America by Drs. V. H.
Wright and H. Collins, of the Uni
versity of Pittsburgh.
Sound, healthy teeth in a clean
mouth are like a well guarded gate
which keeps the many enemies out of
the body.
Last year the common cold cost
more than $5,000,000 in loss of
waiVs. More absences from work
were due to it than any other illness.
When you have a cold, stay at home,
and if it is severe, remember pneu
monia is a possible danger.
Until Dr. Theobald Smith discov
ered the cause of Texas cattle fever
in 18S8, the annual loss from this
disease was $40,000,000 per year.
The increasing number of cases of
trench mouth is attributed to un-
cleanliness in glasses used in taverns
and eating establishments serving
alcoholic beverages by Dr. Don C. Ly
ons, of Jackson, Michigan.
Humanity has grown two inches
in average height during the last
century, according to Dr. Edith Boyd,
of the Minnesota University Depart
ment of Anatomy.
More injuries in athletic sports oc
cur to the knee than to any other
place in the body, according to Dr.
Marcus H. Hobart of Northwestern
University.

K0 FEAR OF SECURITY ACT
Omaha. Leroy A. Lincoln, presi
dent of the Metropolitan Life Insur
ance company of New York, Eaid here
he foresees continued business im
provement, and does not expect the
social security act to have a dam
aging effect on life insurance.
"I see nothing at cross purposes
between the social security act and
life insurance," he said. "It is my
opinion that those business institu
tions having their own old age re
tirement plans will adjust them to
conform to the government's new pro
gram, and no employe will lose as a
result." He was in Omaha presiding
at a meeting of 300 Nebraska and
