JAPAN GAINS TRILLION
'Tokyo. Tlio population of Japan
increased by slightly more than 1,
000,000 persons during the year,end

Japan Prcpr-p had a population of
about 70,150,000, of which about a
third was centered in urban settle
ments, the report said. The census
rhowed there were approximately
190,000 mere men than women. The
population of Tokyo alone exceeded
C, 000,000.

THE BRIGHTEST FRESHMAN
Fremont, Neb. Possessing knowl
edge equal to that expected in a man
of 3S with like education, David
Stowe, 17, Council IUuffs, has stamp
ed himself as the "brightest" of Mid
land college 150 freshmen. lie is a
journalism major.
Stowe gainttl the rating by scoring
215.5 out of a possible 229 points
in an Iowa silent reading test.
The score was the highest ever
made by a -Midland freshman. Aver
age for the class was 127.
Stowe scored a perfect G2 in the
reading comprehension elivision, more
than double the 30.7 average. La
Verne. Lantz, Lexington, was also
perfect in reading comprehension.
Second in the class was Doris
Ayres Winnebago, who scored 210.5
points. Next were George Sanderson,
Fremont, with 210; Katherine Fraud
sen, Fremont, 205; and Elna Lund.

New York. Social security pen
sions will not u fleet the eompany
financed retironu nt plan of the Hell
Telephone system, it was announced
Tuesday. The 270,000 employes elig
ible to draw upon the $193,000,000
pension funds of the Bell system may
do so in amounts equal to the full
company pension plus one-half of the
government pension. Workers do not
contribute to the company fund.
Should the social security act be
changed b?fore 1942 the organization
will draft a new policy. The IJcll sys
tem was the first of the big corpor
ations with private retirement funds
to announce its policy in connection
with the new federal lav.

Dayton, Ohio, where they are spend
ing a short time with Mrs. Corhin,
mother of Mrs. Davis. Mrs. Corbin
has been in poor health for some time.
