ATTEND KOTARY MEETING

N. C. Abbott, superintendent of
the Nebraska School for the Blind
at Nebraska City, was here today in
company with his son-in-law, Donald
A. MacKinnon, of Rochester, New
York. Mr. and Mrs. MacKinnon, the
latter formerly Miss Grace Abbott,
are spending a short time at Nebras
ka City and later will motor on back
to their home in the east.
The gentlemen were in attendance
at the meeting of the Rotary club
at noon, Mr. Abbott being one of the
best known members of the club in
his home city.
HERE FROM CALIFORNIA
Mr. and Mrs. William P. Rice, re
siding on Wintersteen Hill, were very
pleasantly surprised on Saturday
when Mr. and Mrs. Jack Richter of
,Long Beach, California, arrived here
to enjoy a visit with their relatives
in this community. Mrs. Richter is
a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred
Rice.

TO VISIT OLD FRIENDS
From Tuesday's Dally:
Mrs. Frank W. Hawkenberry, of
Tacoma, Washington, will arrive this
afternoon to enjoy a visit here with
the old time friends, the family hav
ing made their home here over a long
period of years. Mrs. Hawkenberry
while here will be a guest at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward G. Ofe.
She has been visiting with her son,
Leonard W. Hawkenberry and wife
at Pueblo, Colorado, where he Is in
charge of a large car shops.
REQUEST TO CHURCH
Falls City, Neb. A bequest of
$500 to St. Ann's church of Shubert
was disclosed when the will of An
thony Ege, prominent Falls City
farmer, was admitted to probate. Oth
er bequests to relatives were made
out of the estate, which included J
two quarter sections of land In Rich
ardson county, a farm in Illinois and
$3,500 worth of personal property.
DOING VERY NICELY
Henry Herold, one of the long time
residents of this city, is reported as
doing very nicely at Omaha where he
is at the Clarkson hospital.' Mr.
Herold has been there for the past
two weeks and seems to be respond
ing to treatment in fine shape and
it is hoped may soon be able to be
brought home.
HERE FROM CALIFORNIA
From Tuesday's Dally:
Mrs. Fred G. Egenberger arrived
this morning from her home at Long
Beach, California, and will enjoy a
visit of a week or ten days here with
the relatives and old time friends.
Mrs. Egenberger is a guest at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Egen
berger while in the city.
IN SERIOUS CONDITION
The condition of Mrs. H. C. Long,
aged resident of Murray, Is very criti
cal at this time as she is suffering
from the effects of a stroke sustained
a few days ago. Mrs. Long resides
with her daughter and son-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. George E. Nickles at
Murray.
FILLS SPEAKING DATES
County Attorney W. G. Kleck was
kept busy on Memorial day with two
speaking engagements to fulfill,
speaking at Elmwood in the morning
and at Weeping Water in the after
noon. Both of the observances were
open air meetings and very largely
attended.

Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Small and
son, of Memphis, Missouri, arrived
in the city last evening to attend
the funeral of David Lancaster at
Murray this afternoon. Mr. Small is
a cousin of Earl Lancaster, father of
the deceased.

AVOCA NEWS
John Marquardt was over to Lin
coln on Tuesday of this week where
he was looking after some business
for a short time.
H. M. Lum of the Avoca Lumber
company, was a visitor for over De
coration day and Sunday at the home
of a cousin at Verdon.
Otto Horschield, living in the
country, has been having some exten
sive repairs and rebuilding done on
his house and barn at the farm.
Herman P. Friedenberg, living two
miles south of Avoca, has been mak
ing some extensive repairs at the
farm home during the past few
weeks.
Elmer J. Hallstrom and family
were spending last Sunday in Platts
mouth where they were guests at the
home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
John Hallstrom.
The Woman's club of Avoca was
meeting at the home of Mrs. Emma
Rawalt on Wednesday afternoon,
where they enjoyed a very fine pro
gram and were entertained very
pleasantly by Mrs. Rawalt.
Verne Rawalt who was a member
of the program In Omaha where he
was playing on the Major Bowes pre
paratory amateur program received
a rating of third of all who were on
the program. Verne's music was pro
duced on a saxophone.
George Fox, state warehouse in
specor making bis home in Lincoln,
was a visitor in Avoca with his
friend, Henry Maseman. They were
formerly near neighbors when Mr.
Maseman resided near Bertrand in
the western portion of the state.
Miss Clara Meyers who makes her
home in Lincoln, having been em
ployed there for some time past, was
spending Decoration day with her
mother, Mrs. Anna Meyers of Avoca.
Mrs. Wm. Theuke, sister of Miss Anna
Meyers also was visiting for oxer the
week end with his sister.
Miss Dorothy Gollner who has been
spending the past two weeks during
her vacation from her work for the
government at Omaha, with her
friend, Miss Josephine H. Hull of
Washington, Iowa, returned to Avoca
to spend the remainder of the week
with her parents, which completes
her vacation.
Having Store Front Painted.
Frank Betts, the painter, has been
exercising his ability as a decorator
and painter in the painting of the
store front of J. If.' F. Ruhge, as well
as the room east which is occupied
by Dick Neumeister.
James Cullen and Wife Better.
Mr. and Mrs. James Cullen, who
were so severely injured some weeks
ago In an auto accident have been
showing good improvement during
the past few weeks. Mr. Cullen was
able to visit Avoca last week and
Mrs. Cullen is showing good improve
ment, but is still kept to her bed and
will for a number' of months yet, al
though she is doing very nicely now
considering the gravity of the injuries.
Attended School Commencement.
Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Kokjer were
over to Crete a number of days this
week attending the exercises lncldnet
to the closing of the school year at
Doane college where their son, Jor
dan is graduating with the closing
of the school year which occurred

Has Many Young Turkeys.
Clarence Norris living northeast of
Avoca Is at the present time growing
some eleven hundred young turkeys.
They have bo arranged to keep them
penned up and at the same time to
pasture them on red clover and al
falfa. He has coops or runs for them
which fit snugly to the ground which
he places over the pasture and when
they had well eaten the same he
moves it to another spot, thus pre
venting them straying away as well
as protecting them from coyotes. He
is meeting with good success raising
the young turkeys.
Make Proffer to Avoca Boy.
The Hazel McOwen 6how which has
been showing here during the winter
and up to the present, having another
show the coming week, has made a
very flattering proposition to Ernest
Gollner for employment for the com
ing year. Ernest Is considering the
proposal but as yet has not decided
as to whether he will acceptfbr not.
In Honor of Bride.
Miss Anna Marie Sailing, aunt of
Mrs. Robert McDonald of Manley,
formerly Miss Julia Neilson, la giving
a shower in honor of the bride at
her home In Avoca today (Thursday
where a large number of the friends
of the bride are gathered and a gen
eral good time is being had with an
abundance of gifts, tokens of the high
esteem in which the bride Is held.
