KENNAMER APPEAL DENIED
POP LADEN WITH ALCOHOL
' "That's the strongest pop I ever
tasted," said Chairman Gass of the
state liquor commission Monday
when invited by Joseph Kastntr of
Nebraska City to sample a bottle he
rnicl his granddaughter bought in the
hamburger cstabl'3hment of William
Metz., jr. Others, including Metz,
agreed it was strongly tinged with
alcohol. It developed, however, that
tiie purchase was made before young
Metz got a license to sell beer. Li
quor Inspector Buss testified when he
entered the place not long ago the
man on duty ran to the back room as
soon as he spied him and ha ran
liter him. There he found two men
who had been playing cards. Each
bad a whisky bottle. They said they
had brought them in there. Metz in
sisted he could not possibly prevent
this being done, when he was not
watching. He said he had fired the
man. He also said he had discharged
a man who had brought liquor into
jthe place and caused Metz to be
prosecuted and fined S100. His ap
peal has been pending a year,
i Kastner and his wife complained
'the place was kept open all night,
and a vacant lot in the rear was the
scene of repeated carousals, disturb
ing their tenants. Metz's father, who
made the pop, said it was all spite-
work, and expressed the opinion thatj
Kastner had put the alcohol in the
I bottle, which brought Kastner to his
,feet in indignant protest.
Oklahofa . City. Phil Kennamer,
19 year old son of a federal judge,
was ordered by the criminal court
of appeals to surrender Wednesday to
serve a 25 year manslaughter sen
tence In the 1934 Tulsa "society"
slaying of John F. Gorrell, jr. The
court's ruling closed Kennamer's last
state legal avenue of escape. The
youth indicated he was prepared to
obey the mandate. He had no com
ment. Informed of the court action, Gov
ernor E. W. Marland said he would
give no clemency to the youth "dur
ing my administration."
Kennamer was convicted in Feb
ruary, 1935, for the admitted slay
ing of Gorrell Tulsa dental student.
In the day's' action, Judges T. II.
Doyle, T. A. Edwards and James S.
Davenport unanimously denied the
defense plea for a new appeal ruling
end then enjoined the trial court
from vacating the conviction.
SLAYERS GET 199 YEARS
Chicago. Durland Nash and Rob
ert Goethe, both 19, who pleaded
guilty to the murder of Dr. Silber C.
Peacock, child specialist who was
lured to his death by a spurious sick
call Jan. 2, were sentenced to 199
years in prison each by Criminal
Court Judge Joseph Burke.

pendent upon increased production
and proper distribution "and cannot
come from their curtailment."
"The major part of the increase
in production, which must come if
we are to have permanent recovery,
must occur in the durable goods in
dustries, where the recession has
been the greatest," he said. "The
buying of durable goods hinges on
the prospects which the industries
that buy durable goods have of earn
ing reasonable profits."
