Nehawka
Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Lohnes will farm
this spring on the farm of their
daughter, Mrs. Troop.
Frank Lemon and wife were en
joying a visit last Sunday night at
Nebraska City, where they were at
tending a show.
A. G. Cisney was shredding corn
at the farm home on last Monday for
the feeding of the cattle which he
has on feed at this time.
Mrs. Lyle Kruger and little grand
son, Lawrence Kruger, Jr., were over
to Nebraska City last Sunday evening
where they were attending a show.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Guede and the
children of Panama were guests for
the day last Sunday at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Kruger where all
onjoyed a very pleasant visit.
Mrs. Charles Hemphill, the genial j
and accommodating clerk at the post-
office is just recovering after a se
vere attack of the flu which she has
been having the past week.
A. R. Dowler of Nebraska City, was
a visitor in Nehawka on Monday of
this week and was looking after the
interests of the automobile company
for which he works as a salesman.
Joseph Rudolph of Eagle where he
is one of the candidates who is aspir
ing for nomination and election to
the unicameral legislature, was
visiting with' his many friends over
the district.
Mr. and Mrs. A. A. McReynolds and
Miss Lanna McReynolds, nephew and
nieces of the late Charles A. McReyn
olds who died in Omaha were attend
ing his funeral at Omaha on Tues
day of this week.
Mrs. Alice Creamer who has been
making her home during the winter,
with her daughter, Mrs. Walter Sans
of Omaha, returned to her home in
Murray on last Saturday and will
remain here for the present.
Albert Anderson and family were
over to Lorton last Sunday where
they were guests for the day at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. C. Steffens for
the day and dinner. Frank Horstman
and family of Dunbar were also
guests at the Steffens home.
Guy Rood and family of Burr were
guests for the day last Sunday and
for a very fine dinner at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Nels Anderson. They
all enjoyed the very fine visit and
excellent dinner which was served by
Mrs. Anderson, mother of Mr. Rood.
County Commissioner E. B. Chap
man of Union with Commissioner
Fred II. Gorder, were over to Louis
ville viewing the new channel of
the Platte river which was cut when
the high water came. On their return
home they stopped at Nehawka to
look after some county business on
Monday of this week.
Conducted Services Here.
District Superintendent G. E. Gil
bert of the Methodist church, from
Omaha, was a visitor in Nehawka
last Sunday and conducted services
at the Methodist church here.

the country club, Know Your Neigh
bor, which is a social club having
for its aims the getting closer togeth
er of the country neighbors and of
knowing each other better. The
meeting was held on Wednesday of
last week and was quite largely at
tended, all enjoying the very fine
program which was had. Among oth
er things they exchanged flowers and
plants while Mrs. J. L. Young ad
dressed the club on the decorating
of the home grounds with flowers and
shrubs.
Planting Hany Trees.
Parr Young, living some five miles
north of Nehawka, has some six men
planting a grove of trees, some of
which are for windbreak and others
are fruit trees of various kinds. They
are to plant some five hundred of
these trees. Mr. Young is a tree en-
thusiast and believes in replacing a
tree when on dies or is cut down

MOTHERS COULD STOP WAS
Humboldt, Neb. Mrs. David
Simms of Hastings, told the first dis
trict convention of the Nebraska Fed
eration of Women's clubs here Tues
day "mothers could prevent war if
they really cared to." Mrs. Simms is
chairman of the women's clubs inter
national relations committee.
In an open forum, she said, "war
really simmers down to a commer
cial proposition and it women are
willing to sacrifice a few financial
gains, there can be everlasting
peace."
The theme of the convention, pre
sided over by Mrs. J. A. Jimerson of
Auburn, district president, is "The
Search for Security." More than 225
women registered for the meeting, in
cluding 20 of the 21 district chair
men, all five state officers, a state
chairman, and the national director
for Nebraska. The counties repre
sented are Johnson, Cas3, Lancaster,
Nemaha, Otoe, Pawnee and Richard
son. The convention will close Wed
nesday with an election of officers.

Mrs. Fred ttuhge has been feeling
not the very best for the past few
days on account of a siege of cold and
the grippe.
Harry Trode and wife were over
to Pawnee City for over the week
end visiting with friend3, returning
home on Monday.
Mr. R. M. Thomson with hi3 home
in Missouri, was visiting at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Freeman, re
maining for a couple of days.
Louis Ruhge and wife were visit
ing for over Sunday at Auburn where
they were guests at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. J. M. Dunbar for the day
enjoying a very fine visit.
Fred Gollner, who is with Jim
my Joy's orchestra and having a few
day's vacation came down from Mil
waukee to visit with the home folks

Miss Leona Everett, the genial and
accommodating operator at the Avoca
telephone exchange has ben almost
out of the picture as far as work was
concerned as she has been having a
very severe cold.
Mrs. Fred McGrady was visiting
at the home of her parents at Brock
for over Monday, returning home in
the evening, accompanied by her bro
ther, Julius Neumeister and wife who
also visited there.
Mr. and Mrs. K. V. White, Mrs.
White being sister of Mrs. Fred Mar-
quardt, were guests at the Marquardt
home for the day Sunday and all
visited Shenandoah where they visit
ed the broadcasting stations.
George Jourgesen of Nebraska City
was a visitor in Avoca last Monday,
being guest at the home of his par
ents, Peter Jourgesen and wife, also
visiting with his brothers, Pete and
Henry and his many friends in Avoca.
Claude Durham who has been at
Central City where he has been as
sisting his brother in the cafe which
he conducts there, being in not the
best of health returned to Avoca and
is resting with the hope of better
health.
Mr. and Mrs. A. Z. Thomas of
Shenandoah and their two daughters
were visiting in Avoca at the home of
the father of Mrs. Thomas, Postmas
ter W. II. Bogaard, where all enjoy
ed a very fine visit for Sunday, re
turning to Shenandoah in the even
ing. H. M. Lum was over to Nebraska
City to meet and -visit with his
nephew who was going to Omaha and
was to be accompanied by his uncle.
Mr. Lum, but as the car of the cousin
failed to function, the trip to Omaha
was deferred and the visit had at Ne
braska City.
Miss Evelyn Moore of Hamlet, who
is niece of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Goll
ner and who is attending school at
Peru is staying at the Gollner home
during the spring vacation. She
would have liked to have gone to
her home in the west but the distance
was thought to be too great.
Enjoyed Birthday Anniversary.
The friends of Dr. J. W. Brendel
called at his home and enjoyed a real
men's party which the denominated
a stag party in commemoration of
the passing of his birthday anniver
sary which occurred on March 27th.
They enjoyed cards and had a good
smoke as well as some eats which
were prepared by Mrs. Brendel. All
declared the evening one well spent
and most thoroughly enjoyed.
Visiting in Avoca.
Foster May, news broadcaster at
station WOW in Omaha, was a visitor
in Avoca last Monday evening and
was meeting with his many friends
here. Mr. May is a candidate for
nomination for congress on the dem
ocratic ticket for the first district
and was meeting with his many
friends in order to win their support
at the primaries.
Had Excellent Farm Sale.
J. M. Quinn, a few miles west of
Avoca held a sale early this week
and among other things offered for
sale was some good horses, they being
sold by Col. Rex Young and averaged
$142.50 which was both pleasing to
Mr. Quinn and Mr. Young. Horses
are selling pretty good at this time.
Some Lands Changing
Harry Marquardt some time ago
purchased what is known as the
Donelan place and which he had for
some time, disposed of the same early
this week to Dick Berdette, taking
in exchange as part payment a forty
acre place some six miles west of
Avoca.
Very Active in His Canvass.
Senator Fred L. Carsten, who was
a member of the last state senate,
and who has filed for the unicameral
legislature, has been very active in
his canvass for nomination and Tues
day of this week he was visiting at
Wabash and vicinity, Murdock, Man-
ley and Cedar Creek, where he was
meeting with the voters. He was in

meeting the voters of that portion
of the county.
Hears Nephew Had Died.
Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Kokjer late last
week received word of the passing
of a nephew of Mrs. Kokjer, who
made his home at Clarks, Nebraska,
Rev. and Mrs. Kokjer departed Im
mediately to be present at tlie fun
eral and to render what aid possible
in their hour of deep sorrow.
Infant Son Dies.
Mr. and Mrs. Win. Kunz were bless
ed last Sunday by the birth of a son
which was rather frail. Dr. J. W.
Brendel took the infant to the hos
pital at Nebraska City where it was
placed in an incubator, and every
precaution taken to assist the little
babe to live. However the little one
died when less than a half day old.
The burial was had on Tuesday of
this week. The mother is doing fair-
lyy well. The parents have the sym
pathy of their numerous friends here
FUNDS ASKED BY BED CROSS
Contributions will be received by
the Cass county chapter, American
Red Cross. They may be given to
local committee or sent direct to Mrs.
Henry Tool, secretary-treasurer, Mur
dock, Nebraska. $3,000,000 will be
needed for the 200,000 victims who
look to Red Cross for immediate re
lief. Our quota of $90.00 has been for
warded but this fund must be re
placed for future emergencies.

JURY CLEARS VESTA YOUTH
Tecumseh. A coroner's jury late
Tuesday ruled the fatal shooting at
Vesta Monday night of Carl Starlin,
5, was accidental and completely ab
solved Chester Jeffery, 17, who held
the revolver which caused Starlin's
death.
County Attorney Morrisey said
Starlin, Jeffery and two other boys
were playing with the gun at the
home of Frank Thompson. Jeffery,
Morrisey said, was twirlin gthe weap
on around his finger by the trigger)
guard when it exploded. The bul
let entered Starlin's ear and he died
instantly.

Public Notice is hereby given that
the Chairman and Board of Trustees
of the Village of Greenwood in the
County of Cass, State of Nebraska, by
resolution duly passed and entered
in the minutes of their proceedings
in accordance with Article 6, Chap
ter 11, of the Compiled Statutes of
the State of Nebraska for 1929, di
rected that public notice be given
stating that Water Bonds amounting
to the principal sum of $8,500.00
dated July 1, 1925, which were voted
at a special election held May 26th,
1925, and authorized by Ordinance
No. 47 at a meeting of the Board of
Trustees held on the 1st day of June,
1925 and bearing interest at the rate
of five per centum (5) per annum,
are outstanding and unpaid; that
Water Extension bonds amounting to
the principal sum of $3,000.00 dated
July 1, 1925, which were voted at a
special election held May 26th', 1925,
and authorized by Ordinance No. 48
at a meeting of the Board of Trustees
held on the 1st day of June, 1925,
and bearing interest at the rate of
five per centum '(5) per annum,
are outstanding and unpaid; that the
rate of interest since the issuance of
these bonds has so declined in the
market that by taking up and pay
ing off such bonds by an issue of
"Refunding Bonds" as provided by
law, a substantial saving in the
amount of yearly running interest
will be made to said Village; that
the said outstanding bonds are
sought to be taken up and paid off by
means or ' uetunding Bonds" oi said
Village, in the principal amount of
$11,500.00 bearing interest at the
rate of three and one-half per cen-
turn (Zy2) per annum, payable
semi-annually which the Chairman
land Board of Trustees of said Village
propose to issue.

Weber has filed his petition alleging
that A. F. Long, also known as An
thony F. Long, died intestate on or
about January 10, 1882, being a resi
dent and inhabitant of Cas3 county,
Nebraska, and died Beized of the fol
lowing described real estate, to-wit:
