Robert Campbell Ferguson was
born in Erie county, N. Y., near Buf
falo, January 4, 1S50. He lived there
three years when he with his par
ents moved to Guernsey county, Ohio,
near Cambridge where the mother
died in 18G1. In 1869 when he was
19 years old the remaining family
came to xeoraska, traveling ny
steamboat down the Ohio river to
Cairo, Illinois, then to St. Louis on
the Mississippi, from there to Ne
braska City on the Missouri, the trip
taking 18 days. They lived on the
Steamwagon road west of Nebraska
City nearly three years when they
moved to the home nine miles north
west of Nebraska City where he re
sided for 67 years.
He was married July 28, 1S90 to
Miss Kate McCartney who lived on
an adjoining farm.
To this union was born three chil
dren, two who are surviving, Mrs.
Ivan Balfour of Union, Nebr., and
Charles, living on the home place.
One child, a baby twin, died when
four months old. The wife died Feb
ruary 14, 1899, leaving him with two
email children, 5 and 7 years old,
Charles and Eunice. As soon aa the
daughter was old enough, she kept
house for the father and brother.
The original family consisted of
seven sons and one daughter of which
Robert was the last survivor. He was
also the only one of the family born
in America. The rest, father, mother,
Brothers and sister, were born in
Glasgow, Scotland. His father was a
type setter. The brothers names
were William, George, Thomas, Oliv
er, James, the baby brother buried
iu the ocean and one sister, Eliza
beth, former Mrs. John Edmunds of
Murray, Nebraska.
He voted his first time in Wyoming
precinct and had never missed an
election there. The first president
he voted for was General Grant, in
1S72. He was always a strong re
publican and took much interest in
politics. He was always proud of his
Scotch origin and the Presbyterian
faith. He always loved the Wyoming
church and never missed attending
a church dinner. He loved commun
ity gatherings, also gatherings of the
family.
His father William, and sister,
Elizabeth, wife, Kate, and son, are
buried in Cowles Hill cemetery. The
father died in 1877. He was very
much devoted to his two grandchil
dren, Verla Kathleen Balfour and
Calvin Ferguson. He spent several
months each year at the Balfour
home near Union and it was there
on Thursday, March 5 that he had
his last illness, suffering a stroke
and heart attack. On Monday he was
removed to St. Mary's hospital at Ne
braska City, where all possible care
was rendered him, his two children
both giving blood for transfusions
in the hope of his getting better. He
passed away on Saturday, March 14,
to attend. J. II. Steffens went down
to Lorton where he looked after the
conduct of the bank while they v. ere
