FIRM ON LAW ENFOKCEMENT
State Liquor Commission Chair
man Cass reiterated his determin
ation to enforce the law to the letter
in the Omaha road house situation.
Gass indicated the commission is
waiting reaction n:, ixmeias County
Sheriff John Hopkins to a letter de
manding closing of four establish
ments outside Omaha city limits. The
road houses allegedly are dispensing
liquor in dclance of law.
"Vfe are not asking anybody to do
anything unreasonable, but we have
no choice but to enforce the law,"
said Gass.
Waterloo, Neb. John Hopkins,
sheriff of Douglas county, in reply
to a letter from the state liquor com
mission demanding he close night
clubs in the county alleged to be
violating tho state liquor law, said
here it was not, in his opinion, the
duty of the sheriff to enforce the li
quor law. .It was, he said, the duty
of th commission itself. The com
mission haa the facilities and the
money, which, he added, he does not
have. Hopkins was here attending
the Douglas county fair.
TUBERCULOSIS DEATHS EISE
Kansas City. A recent tendency
for both mortality and morbidity of
tuberculosis cases to increase was at
tributed to inadequate diet by Dr.
Benjamin Goldberg of the University
of Illinois.
Speaking before the American Con
gress of Physical Therapy, Dr. Gold
berg, formerly director of the Chi
cago municipal tuberculosis sanitor
ium, said: "Last year in the forty
two largest cities of the United
States there was a 3 percent decrease
in tuberculosis mortality, but within
the last seven or eight months of this
year, figures taken from reports of
state health departments show a dis
turbing tendency for both mortality
and morbidity of tuberculosis cases to
increase."
