IlW" Thousands are Eligible to Receive Old Age Pension State Pension Commissioner Perry Predicts 30,000 But No Sijpi of Payment. State Pension Commissioner Perry has approved the 5,000th old age pen sion application and begun checking over 12,000 more. He predicted there ultimately would be 30,000 persons on the pension roll a dubious ad vantage because Perry Is beginning to wonder whether the pensions ever will be paid. The cost to Nebraska of paying its half share of the $30 pensions to elderly persons, even if there are only 25,000 persons qualified to receive them, would be $9,000,000 a bien nium. That Is almost as much money as the state collects to support the entire state trovernment. Tax rev enue runs about $11,900,000 a bien nium. The federal government's share would be $9,000,000 and it is not yet certain whether President Roosevelt will find a way to make the federal security act effective. Appropriations for the federal pension fund lost out in a filibuster by the late Senator Long of Louisiana. With the cost conservatively esti mated at $9,000,000, Nebraska has made available theoretically only $5, 500,000 a biennium for old age pen sions and there is considerable doubt whether the pension fund will get all that. This issue hinges principally on the state supreme court's decision on constitutionality of the assistance fund act. The court must decide soon wheth er the one cent gasoline tax, the pro ceeds to go to the state assistance committee, is legal. CONVICTED IN LIQUOR CASE Papillion, Neb. DOLLAR VOLUME INCREASES Washington. The federal reserve board reported that the dollar vol ume of department store sales In August showed a 4 percent increase over the same month last year. A survey of 507 stores in 240 lead ing cities showed a similar increase for the first eight months of 1935, with larger volumes of sales reported in all reserve districts except the three eastern regions of Bostpn, New York and Philadelphia.
