Simon Rehmeier was at Lincoln,
where he attended the state fair last
Tuesday afternoon.
Mrs. Elmer West is enjoying a
Visit from her sister, who resides in
Kansas and who is spending some
two weeks here.
Edward Gruell, who has been liv
ing in town, has moved to the coun
try and is occupying the tenant house
on the farm of Orest Cook.
John Banning and wife were in
Lincoln last Wednesday afternoon,
where they were visiting with friends
and also attending the state fair.
G rover Rhoden of Manley wa3 look
ing after some business matters in
Alvo on Wednesday of last week, and
was meeting with his many friends
here.
Frank Hempke was delivering some
wheat for Ed Fisher to the Rehmeier
elevator on last Wednesday. This was
wheat that had been stored at thresh
ing time.
The Board of Education of the Alvo
consolidated schools, was in session on
Monday night, considering matters of
business connected with the conduct
of the schools.
William Kearn, proprietor of the
Alvo Drug company, has been install
ing some refreshment booths for the
purpose of serving soft drinks and
other refreshments.
Carl Rosenow and wife were in
Lincoln on Labor day, where they at
tended the state fair during the even
ing, remaining for some three hours,
and say that was plenty.
Jerry, 17 months old son of Mr.
and Mrs. E. L. Cogdill, has been very
ill, being under treatment by Dr.
Buzza, and we are glad to state is
getting along nicely at this writing.
Roy Stewart and Lee Stewart and
wife were in Omaha last Wednesday,
where they purchased some furniture
and other goods, some of which were
to replenish the stock at the store.
Mrs. L. M. Scott has been appointed
by the Rock Island as caretaker at the
Rokoby station of the company south
of Lincoln and will take the position,
beginning September 17th.
Jesse Jackson and wife, of Danne
brog, who were friends of Dr. Buzza
and husband, as well as clients of
Dr. Buzza, were here from their home
to make a professional call on the
doctor.
It is claimed that the installation
of a waterworks sj-stem in Alvo will
entail the spending of some $3,000
for labor alone, all of which would be
paid to unemployed residing in this
community
Miss Doris Coatman, who taught
the Bushberry school last year, is
teaching the Emerald school west of
Lincoln this year, while Miss Horsch,
of Eagle, is the teacher of the Bush
berry school this year.
Mrs. J. M. Armstrong, who has
been in very poor health for some
time past, having had some affliction
of her eyes that greatly impaired her
sight, is reported as being greatly im
proved which will be good news to
her many friends.
With the increased business which
is being transacted at the Farmers
and Merchants Bank of Alvo, and the
additional papers and records to be
cared for, it has been found necessary
to purchas; a new safe, which arrived
and was installed last week.
Messrs and Mesdames Earl Dreamer
and John Elliott were at Lincoln last
Tuesday, where they attended the
state fair and looked over the live
stock and machinery exhibits which
were commanding much attention on
the part of visitors generally.
Dr. Buzza and William Kearns, her
husband, who is engaged in the drug
business, are both well pleased with
the business that has come to them
since locating here, and appreciate
the kindly welcome that citizens of
the town and surrounding community
have extended to them.
Betty Swanson, age four, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Swanson,
while at play had the misfortune to
receive a severe wound in one of her
hands which became affected and was
treated by Dr. Mildred J. Buzza, with
the result that the little one i3 get
ting along very nicely now.
Perry Cook sold five hundred bush
els of rye to the Simon Rehmeier
elevator last Wednesday, which is to
be delivered in a short time. This i3
of exceptionally good Quality and as
there is a good demand for rye now,
it brought a very fair price. Many are
using it to take the place of corn for
feeding stock, and find it costs con
siderably less than the maize in com
parison with its fattening qualities.
Ray Clarke, who has been residing
in the country, has moved to town so
the children may be able to attend
Bchool regularly. While conversing
with the Journal representative, he
stated that hi3 mother, Mrs. F. II.
Clarke, was that day celebrating her
79th birthday anniversary and was in
good health and able to get about as
well as in earlier life. Congratula
tions to you, Mrs. Clarke.
Making Home in Lincoln
Max Adams, who has been mak
ing his home on a farm some four
imiles north of Dannebrog, where he
was engaged in farming, although be
ing chief clerk of the house in the
last Nebraska legislature and a form
er legislator, following his recent ap
pointment as secretary of the Nebras
ka Liquor commission, moved to Lin
coin during the past week, and the
family will make their home there in
the future. Mr. Adams is well known
over Cass county, having been born
and raised at Plattsmouth, as well as
over the state, where he made many
acquaintances during his legislative
terms and while holding the office of
house clerk.
Purchases New Track
The firm of Coatman & Skinner re
cently purchased a new Chevrolet
truck, and as evidence of the fact
that they were needing it, we will say
that during the first five days they
had it, the distance recorded on the
speedometer was over a thousand
miles. They are finding business on
the increase and needing additional
facilities to take care of it. When we
all get in that same position there
will be no further need to worry about
the depression, for it will have gone
from our midst. Let us hope for a
hastening of that time.
Says Business Has Been Good
John Elliott, the hardware and
implement man, advised the writer
that business has been good during
the past summer and that he has sold
thirty-six new farm tractors in this
part of the country, some of them go-
ing a consiaeraDie aistance irom
Alvo.
Waterworks System Live Issue
The proposal to build a waterworks
system for Alvo is one of the live is
sues just now and one that will have
to be settled. Many contend it would
be a fine thing for Alvo and that while
the bucket brigade as a fire fighting
measure was all right in its day, it
does not serve the present age or give
adequate fire protection to property.
Just now there is opportunity to get
an outright government grant of 45
per centof the cost, the remainder
being bonded to the government at a
low rate of interest, and thus all the
money would be forthcoming at once
to meet the expense.
The town board has received and
considered a resolution asking for the
calling of a special election to deter
mine the wishes of the voters. From
the result of such election it could be
determined whether to go ahead with
the proposal or not at this time.
It is quite probable there will never
be a like opportunity of getting such
a large percentage of the cost con
tributed as exists at the present time
under the PWA setup.
School Enrollment Up 200
The Bushberry school, northeast of
Alvo and located about midway "be
tween Alvo and Murdock, which was
taught by Miss Doris Coatman last
year, is taught by Miss Horsch of
Eagle this year. Last year there was
one student and this year there are
three, an increase of 200 per cent in
the enrolment. Should there be any
where near a like increase in all the
schools of the country it would be
impossible to supply teachers, solv
ing the depression so far as the teach
ing profession is concerned, but this
is only one isolated case out of thous
ands. There are reported, however,
jTioderate increases in enrollment in
most of the schools of Cass county and
in at least one school in the county
it has been necessary to add another
teacher to the force to take care of
the extra pupils.
They Saw Much Country
Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Rosenow re
turned home last week from a pleas
ant trip through the west that took
them to Sheridan, Wyoming, where
they visited at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Obed Clarke. Mrs. Rosenow and
Mrs. Clarke are sisters. Concluding
their stay there, they returned home
via Denver and Colorado Springs, in
each of , which cities they spent a
short time. They viewed Pikes Peak
from a distance, but as they had had
plenty of mountain climbing during
their stay in Wyoming they did not
care to either climb the mountain or
to make the trip to its top via the
cog road.
They arrived home much refresh
ed from their vacation trip, despite
the fact they were on the go much of
the time and traveled many miles, be
ing ready to resume their work in the
store when they reached home.
Visited at Norwalk, Iowa
Mrs. Roy Stuart and the girls, Jo
sephine, Marie, Marlene and Evelyn,
were visiting at Norwalk, Iowa, dur
ing the past week, being guests at
J. Howard Davis
Attorney at Law
Plattsmouth
the home of the parents of Mrs.
Stuart. They returned home Satur
day, making the trip in some three
hours and driving in the rain all of
the way. They report a most pleas
ant visit at the home of the parents,
Mr. and Mrs. M. F. Koaf.
Getting Along Nicely Now
Mrs. Simon Rehmeier, who was at
the hospital for some time, where she
underwent an operation on her feet
for the removal of callases and bone
formation that had come as a result
of wearing wooden shoes when a girl
in the old country, is now showin
good improvement and expects to be
rid of the foot trouble that has caused
her much inconvenience and pain dur
ing most of her life. Just now, she is
enjoj'ing a visit from her sister, who
resides in Iowa.
Perry Cook Here Last Week
Perry Cook, who resides in Lincoln
and operates a filling station for the
Phillips 66 Petroleum company, was
a visitor in Alvo last Wednesday and
was making some extensive repairs
on the country home of Mrs. Blanche
Ifarger. This house, located on a
rental farm, had not been repaired
for a number of years and was badly
in need of the improvements which
Mr. Cook is making thereon to put it
in good condition again.
Mr. Cook, who has been employed
by the Phillips company for the past
seven years, reports the members of
his family are in good health and that
he is doing a good business at the
filling station he operates in the capi
tal city.

give the examination required by law
to all the school during the second
week of school.
Members of the senior class chose
their class rings from Herff -Jones and
their announcements and cards from
the Seright Publishing Co., during
the first week of school.
Boyd Elliott, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Dick Elliott, was out of school the
latter part of the first week with
chicken pox.
The state fire marshal visited the
school during the first week and
made recommendations for change'
in the fire alarm.
Elmer West, member of the board
of education, attended the Cotner
sale of school supplies and equip
ment but found nothing suitable to
our needs at a suitable price.
Baseball practice has begun under
the direction of Coach Walter Speece.
Girls in home economics are work
ing on an apron project.
Seniors elected Dale Haertel, pres
ident; John Weichel, vice-president;
and John Abbott, secretary-treasurer
at an early meeting of the class.

of the freshmen with Orland Ben
nett, vice-president, and Berdyne
Clark, secretary-treasurer.

VISITS OLD FRIENDS
Friday afternoon Mr. and Mrs. C.
K. Murphy and daughter, Phyllis, of
St. Louis, Missouri, arrived in the
city for a short visit with the old
time friends and associates. Mjr. Mur
phy was born and spent his younger
years here, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred
Murphy and he is now engaged as a
traveling representative of the Black-
well & Wielandy Co., of St. Louis,
one of the largest wholesale houses
of the country. From here the party
departed for McCook, Nebraska,
where they will visit with Wayne
Murphy, a brother, for a short time
before returning home.
