Flower Day
for Shut-Ins Set
for June 10th
Henry Jasper of This City local Rep
resentative of the National
Florists to Direct.
Shut-Ins of Plattsmouth have a real
treat in store on Monday, June 10
For this date is the third annual
International Flower Shut-In Day, set
aside by the florists of the United
States and Canada for the purpose
of making permanently disabled men,
women and children happy with gifts
of fragrant June flowers.
Announcement that the florists of
this city had banded together to take
part in the international movement
was made by Henry Jasper, who has
been named chairman of the local
shut-in-day committee.
"This is an entirely altruistic
movement on the part of the florists,"
Mr. Jasper said. "We want that to be
entirely clear. Shut-in day is not to
be construed as an attempt on the
part of the florists to promote flower
selling on this day. On the contrary,
it is our aim to deliver flowers and
plants gratis to every bona fide shut
in we can reach on June 10.
"Shut-in day, which we will ob
serve for the third time this year, is
based on a fundamental idea. Usual
ly, in June, nature is generous with
her flowers. What more worthy use
can be made of this surplus than to
place it at the bedsides of those un
fortunates who, day after day, lie
staring at four uninteresting walls
and who seldom, if ever, are able to
enjoy flowers."
In his announcement, Mr. Jasper
declared that the florist! need, the
public's help in making the worthy
project an unqualified success, tl is
only through public co-operation that
every possible worthy shut-in can be
reached with flowers.
Names should be sent to Mr. Jasper
by June 5th.
Rutii Ann and Lois, Mrs. Will Sporer
and Charles, Mrs. Ralph Kennedy and
Betty Lou, Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Bal
four and Kathleen, Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Ferguson and Calvin, and
R. C. Ferguson, had a family dinner
at the Ferguson home. Rev. Stew
art and Mrs. Stewart were also pres
ent. A good visit was had. R.' C.
Ferguson is 84 years old. A delic
ious dinner was" served at the noon
hour.
Murray Home Study Club.
The Murray Home Study club was
entertained on the regular meeting
day at the home of Miss Etta Nickle
in Plattsmouth, with Mrs. Fanny
Crosser as hostess.
A large percent of the members as
well as a number of visitors were
present to enjoy the excellent noon
lunchton.
In the absence of the president, the
vice president, Mrs. Parks, presided
over the business meeting, at which
time it was voted to hold a picnic for
the club members and their families,
on the lawn of the Christian church
on June 20, the picnic dinner to be
served at noon. Various committees
were appointed to make preparations
for the dinner and the afternoon's
entertainment which promises to be
one of the outstanding social events
of the club year.
As usual, the salute to the flag wa3
given.
Mrs. Faris had charge of the lesson
on "This Grandmothering Business,"
which was ably discussed by several
of the ladies, grandmothers, and
others.
An interesting debate was enjoyed
the question being "Resolved That
Grandmothers Are Nuisances." The
affirmative was taken by Mrs. Grace
Kennedy and the negative by Mrs.
A. G. Long and Mrs. J. H. Faris,
with Mrs. W. W. Perry, Miss Lil
lian White and Mrs. Betty Barrows
as judges, who decided in favor oi
the negative.
An appropriate reading was given
by Miss Bessie Copenhaver, thus
closing another very pleasant after
noon. CAT CLAWS WIN IN BATTLE
