SYLVESTER, Sheriff Cass County, Nebraska. By T. WALLING, Deputy. Grazing Area Acute Worry Over the State Agricultural Expert Says Pasture Problem Follows the Drouth and Overuse. Lincoln, Neb., March 10. Arthur Peterson of the.' Nebraska Agricul tural college reports many Nebraska farmers face the immediate problem of providing grazing for their live stock during the coming months, as pastures in many area3 have suffered immeasurably from the 1934 drouth and over-grazing. He had just returned from a series of pasture improvement meetings thru the state. In the northeast, pastures prob ably are in better shape than in any other part of the state, he said. The percentage of grass kill there ranges from 25 to 50 per cent, he estimated. Pastures, however, on north hillsides, shaded areas and in flood area are in fairly good condition. The eastern part of the river counties in the southeast section also is in "fair" condition, Peterson reported. One of the biggest pasure prob lems of Nebraska for 1935 lies in the southern and central parts, Peter son declared. In many places 75 to 100 per cent of the grass has killed out. Native grasslands have with stood the drouth quite well and will in most cases, come back, he said, but even these will have to be care fully managed and pasturing delay ed. "The necessity of working out a temporary pasture rotation is facing many farmers in order that pasturing in old fields can be delayed while they are being rejuvelnated or while new permanent pastures are being estab lished," he declared. "Many old pas tures will be rejuvinated or while new permanent pastures are being established," he declared. "Many old pastures will need re-sceding this spriug." MES.
