I V 1 1 ! i f 3 page roira TOMGRRra FRANK PARKER STOCKBRIPSS HOOVER today I had a pleasant half-Lour visit with the former President the other day, when he came to New York to attend hi3 first meeting of the dires tors of the New York Life Insurance Company. His whole appearance and manner were those of a man in per fect health and without a care in the world. . " "For the first time in my life, I haven't a single responsibility," he said. "For thirty-five years I held one important executive position after another. No man who is responsible to or for others ever gets a real vaca tion. Se may escape for a time from the telephone or the raido, but he can't escape the burden which he must carry with him always. "It is surprising," he went on, "how much enjoyment and satisfac tion a man with no responsibilities can get out of the most trivial things." We talked about other things, of course, but I won't gossip about those. The things that impressed was that Mr. Hoover, unlike many men who have been accustomed to hard work their lives, has learned how to relax. Tension kills more men than disease. HAUPTMAKN . and crime Now- that Hauptmann- has been convicted and sentenced, I suppose there are still some who question his guilt. There are always perverse minded folk whose pride it is to set up their own personal beliefs against any authority or court, but leaving that tort of a crank out, I do not see how anyone who has had a chance to read the testimony or to listen to the excellent digests of it over the raido as the trial progresed, can have any doubt. The clinching evidence was the complete and positive identification of a part of the kidnapper's ladder as a board that had formerly "been part of Hauptmann's attic floor. And the story for the search for the source of that ar.d the rest of the ladder is one of the most amazing real-life dective stories II have ever heard of. Any lingering doubt I might have had was resolved when the dramatic tale was told by Arthur Koehler, the Gov ernment's wood expert. With the nicks in the blade of Hauptmann's own plane leaving thier clear record on the boards of which the ladder was built, we have another proof of the old adage that "murder will out." No crime fails to leave some clue. HAPPINESS a by-product There is a whole sermon in the re mark that Henry Ford's seretary made the other day. In Mr. Ford's business creed, he said, if one goes out primarily for profit he misses it, profit, like happiness, being a by product. Happiness as a by-product will strike many as a new idea; but that is precisely what it comes to. Hap piness is not something that can be captured by pursuing it. It is only attained by pursuing something else. The road to happiness is the rod of self-respecting duty, of loyality to obligations, of unselfish goodwill to ward others. It may not be seldom AND There is more clanger of car accidents this kind of weather! Miss Dorothy Peg lar, 24, a nurse who had been his companion, hysterically notified police when she could not awaken him. Dr. Huckett's death was ap parently due to acute alcoholism, ' .the coroner reported.. is the road to riches or to power. The time comes in everybody's life when the decision has to made between the pursuit cf pleasure or the pur suit of duty. Exactly the same is true of busi ness. Eusiness that does not put service and quality, fair dealing and honesty first, never inthe long run makes a real profit. If profit is the sole motive of a business, that busi ness lacks the solid basis that will enable it to weather depressions and meet competition. CANDIDATES on parade This is the time, a year and a half before the presidential nominating conventions, when each party trots out its potential candidates for pub lic inspection. There won't be any contest for the Democratic nomina tions, but all over the country people are asking "Who have the republic ans got?" The other night three men stood on the same platform and spoke at the Lincoln Day dinner of the National Republican Club,. One was Herbert Hoover. My guess is that he would give a firm "No'' to an invitation to run again; also that he is not likely to be asked. Another of the three was Harry Hoffmann, Governor of New Jersey. Mr. Hoffmann is looked on by many as the "white hope" f his party. Much will depend upon how he performs as Governor. The third of the group was Glenn Frank, president of the University of Wisconsin, able political analyst, growing lately in public regarl be cause cf his calm but penetrating comments on the New Deal. There are a lot of "prospects" to be heard from. The only finally nominated will be the one who seems like the best vote-getter in 1936. It's going to be an interesting game to watch. FUTILITY of the how Not in many years have there been so many utterly futile projects to make everybody happy, seriously de bated by men who ouht to know bet ter. From Huey Long's "Share the Wealth" scheme, through Dr. Town send'3 $290 a month old age pension plan, Father Coughlin's notions about banking and finance, and several of the just as wild things talked about in Congress which would make it a crime for an industry to be big or for an individual to get rich, they all have one purpose incommon. That is politils. No intelligent person believes for a moment that under any scheme which is possible for adoption in the United Sstates, the ablest and the smartest would net soon have more than the incompent and the stupid, no matter what the laws were. But politicians, who know better them selves, have found they can fcol many voters by promising the impossible. Every penny spent ror advertis ing wil! yield a big return. AVOCA NEWS Robert Fitch, jr., assessor of Cass county was a visitor in Avoca on last Tuesday looking after the matter of surveying and checking up on the streets and alleys which it is pro posed soon to change some. Men to Act Together. The men of Avoca are to get to gether and organize a brotherhood. They have already met two times, only to call another meeting, hoping to get the minds cf the expected members thinking the same way that something may be done for the bene fit of the town and its various activ ities. Loses Home and All Furniture. Elmer McMuITin who is employed on the farm of M. M. Straub east of Avoca on last Saturday night suf fered the loss of his entire possession with the exception of the family. The house was discovered to be on fire and with no way of fighting it. The home with its contents, all the belongings of the family, were des troyed. There was no insurance. Mr. McMullin is a laborer on the Stroub farm and living only as he worked. Death of Wei. Holmes. Uncle Wm. Holmes, 85, who has been making his home alone in a house a few miles south of Nehawka and east of Avoca, passed away Mon day morning. Mr. Holmes was one of the pioneers of Nebraska and Cass county, he being a cousin of the former Arch Holmes of Reck Bluffs in her palmy days, and resided in the neighborhood of Murray for many years where he was employed in the blacksmith business before Murray was a town. SPEEDING SEED LOAN BELL Washington. Farm leaders in congtess sought to obtain unanimous consent to speed an appropriation till to passage to permit an early start on seed loans in drouth areas. The president last week signed the bill authorizing 60 millions in ap propriations for emergency seed loans. He suggested, however, that to prevent further unbalancing of the budget, the funds be provided from the proposed work relief appro priation. The work relief bill, how ever, is so entangled that middle western senators and representatives fear seed loans could not be made available quickly enough if they wait for its passage. CLAIMS PORTRAIT IS BOGUS Washington. George J. Shepard of Washington was held for the fed eral grand jury after a son of former President Cleveland had testified at a U. R. commissioner's hearing that Shepard had sold him an allegedly fake portrait of the late president. Shepard was held under $10,000 bond. The navy recently said a paint ing of John Paul Jones presented to it by Shepard was not the work of its supposed author, Benjamin West. The complaining witness, Richard F. Cleveland of Baltimore, said he paid $150 to Shepard for the Cleveland portrait in 1932 while the latter was going under the name of "Vernon."
