Drafting of Nebraska's relief plan
began yesterday at Lincoln in a con
ference between Governor K. L. Coch
ran and committees from tbc two
houses of the legislature.
Cochran caid methods of alloting
funds to the counties and btate versus
county administration of the proposed
2 million dollar Htate relief appropria
tion were dis.ussed only tentatively.
The legislators were asked to return
today to resume the discussion.
Routine Day in Legislature
The legislature closed the week on
Friday with one of the most routine
dayu of the session. The house spent
most oT the day debating a bill by
Representative F. A. Renter U. f
Syracuse, to permit non-attorneys to
lilt; papers in estate case:! in county
courts, but despaired of action after
two tic votes.
The senate passed and sent to the
Jionse two Omaha firemen's pension
bills and a minor measure on license
fees for optometrists.
Two joint session. enlivened the
day. Arthur F. Mullen, of Omaha,
former democratic national commit
teeman from Nebraska, spoke against
ratification of the federal child labor
amendment at the first joint meeting.

Uniform Delinquent Date
Repeal of the month extra time
given Douglas and Lancaster county

Friday bore the endorsement of both
bouse and senate committees. A bill
to make February 1 the uniform de
linquent date for motor vehicle li
censes was reported favorably by the
house revenue and taxation commit
tee. A senate group recommended a
similar bill a few days ago.
EURKE SPEAKS FOR VOTAVA
Washington. Senator ilurke,
democrat, Nebraska, announced he
has rent in his recommendation for
the appointment of Joseph T. Votava
of Omaha as l S. district attorney
in Nebraska.
Iturke said in making the recom
mendation to the attorney general,
however, he had called attention to
the desire of Senator Norris to have
C. F. Sandall. present district at
torney. K-ft in office until the per
jury case gainst Victor Seymour of
Lincoln, Neb., is disposed of. A hear
ing on Seymour's appeal has been set
for the circuit court lor March 12.
Appointment of Votava by March 15
was suggested by Ilurke.

Miss Catherine Coleman and Mrs.
E. A. Landon were visiting friends in
Ashland last Monday afternoon.
Jack Nichols was quite seriously
hurt while playing basketball with
the Greenwood team at Ashland last
Friday evening.
Whilo E. A. Landon was looking
after some business matters in Lin
coln, the elevator was looked after by
his con, Wayne Landon.
Mrs. Mary VickerH. Mrs. Walter
Jacobmeler and Mrs. Oran Lanning,
of Eagle, were visiting at the A. E.
Leesley home last Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Holt drove to
Aurora Saturday evening to visit Mr.
and Mrs. Cecil Holt and son. They
returned home Sunday evening.
Dr. and Mrs. W. L. Wallace and
family and Mrs. Harold Mason, of
Friend were here Sunday visiting Mr.
and Mrs. Joe Kyles and family.
M. R. Elrod. of Omaha, was a visi
tor in Greenwood last Wednesday,
getting a load of bailed straw which
he was taking to Omaha for feed.
Irvin Goings, son of Rev. Goings,
vas quite sick during the past ten
d.iys, but was reported slightly im
proved the latter part of the week.
Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Landon were
in Lincoln Wednesday of last week,
where they were looking after some
business matters and visiting with
friends.
Mr. and Mrs. George Bucknell were
called to Omaha latt Wednesday to
look after some business matters for

Mrs. Elsie Peters and son, Norman,
were guests last Sunday at the home

Yutan, where they enjoyed a very
pleasant visit with her son and fam
ily.
Mr. and Mrs. John Schuster and
son. ilarry, of Underwood, Iowa, vis
ited at the home of Mrs. Ninnie Cole
man Sunday, Febr. 3rd and also at
tended the funeral of Mrs. A. R. Bird
sall. Walter Woitzel has accepted an of
fer of instructor in the schools at
Sioux City, Iowa, and departed for
there early last week, where he will

ter. Wyo., spent Saturday and Sun
dry here visiting her sister, Mrs. Nils
Coleman and family and also attend

Mr. and Mrs. Andy Meyers were
in Man ley last Sunday, where they
were attending a surprise party on
John Moekenhaupt and wife, who
were celebrating the passing of their
fifteenth wedding anniversary.
Mr. and Mrs. Karl Jardine of Lin
coln. Mr. and Mrs. Chris Kupke of
Murdock. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Lan
don and son and Mr. and Mrs. Win.
Renvanz. Jr.. were visiting at the
Win. Renwanz. Sr. home last Sunday.
Bert L. Phiipot, of Weeping Water,
was a visitor in Greenwood last Tues
day and was meeting with the busi
ness men of the town, interesting
them in the mineral stock food that
one of the stone companies in Weep
ing Water is producing.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Kelly have rent
ed the home of Ray Frederick and ex
pect to move there in a short time.
They have been residing in a portion
of the building where the cream and
produce station is located.
Uncle John M. Mefi'ord, who has
been ill for so many weeks at the
home of his daughter, Mrs. Albert
Bauer and husband, is reported as
feeling much improved at this time,
which v.ili le good news to his many
friends.
Max and Gale Gribblo, sons of Mr.
and Mrs. John S. Cribble, were taken
down with the flu last week and have
been ccT.liiud to their homo and beds
ever since. They are having the best
cf care and it Is hoped they w ill coon
bo well again.
Glenn Lap ham, of Fort Collins,
Cole, who was here visiting relatives,
was taken to the Lutheran hospital
in Omaha last Monday to undergo an
c pi ration for appendicitis. He was re
ported recovering nicely the latter
part of the week.
W. E. Goings, pastor of the local
Christian church, has been putting in
much time during the past week,
chopping wood northeast of town and
thus sohing the fuel problem which
comes to all of us, especially at this
reason of the year.
G. II. Gibson, of Omaha, the new
assistant receiver for the Greenwood
State Rank, was in town last Wednes
day looking after some business mat
ters and meeting the patrons of the
former bank with a view to settle
ment of their accounts.
Mr. and Mrs. George Bucknell at
tended the convention of the Nebras
ka Hardware dealers in Omaha last
Wednesday, remaining for the ban
quet and program in the evening.
Th.ey also looked after some business
matters at tUe wholesale houses.
Mr. and Mrs. Emmet Cook and
family, Mr. and Mrs. Emory McDow
ell and son, and Mr. and Mrs. O. J.
Erickson and daughter were dinner
guests at the Clarence Mathis home
last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer
Mathis and children were also guests
there during the afternoon.
S. S. Petersen, Paul Kelley and
Albert Bauer were assisting Gu3
Brackhage on last Wednesday after
noon in the rawing of a large quan
tity of wood which they had cut and
were hauling to town. They will dis
tribute the result of their labor after
the tawing lias been completed.
Leu is Dettsauer and son came to
town last Wednesday and the son
went on to Waverly to attend the
community sale, while the father was
looking after some trading and visit
ing with friends until the return of
the f:on from Waverly, after which
they continued on home together.
Met with Severe Injury
On last Sunday night, while Al
bert Leeslcy and his friend, Herman
Rau, were driving east from Grcen
v.ooth, with Herman at the wheel,
the lights of passing cars which were
numerous and some exceedingly
bright, caused Herman to veer to one
side of the road to avoid possible con
tact with another car, and they were
precipitated into a ditch at the side
of the road, their car striking a cul
vert, wrecking it quite badly. As a
result of the mishap Albert had his
face cut quite badly and suffered a
number of bruises. Herman was not
injured.
Cattle on Market Wednesday
E. L. McDond, who is an experi
enced feeder of cattle, was on the
Omaha market last Wednesday with
two truck loads of very fine cattle
that were the product of his feed
yards. They were taken to market
in the truck of the Meyer brothers,
lie found a very good market and
received a good price for the cattle.
Feeling1 Much Improved
Liras M. Mowery, who has been at
the hospital in Lincoln for a long
time receiving treatment, is so far ir.i
proved that he has been able to leave
ihe hospital and go to the home of
his daughter residing in that city,
which will be very good news to his
many friends. Mr. Mowery is to have
a sale of his farm machinery and im
plements, as he is not in condition to
continue with the hard work of farm
ing and will rent the place.
New Postmaster Named
On October S, 193-1. there was held
at Lincoln a civil service examination
for the filling of the position of post
master at Greenwood. There were a
total of thirteen who took the exami
nation and among the three highest
eligible for appointment was Mrs. El
sie Kelley. The appointment of this
applicant was announced from Wash
ington on January 1G and a few days
later she received her commission.
The new appointee has been en
gaged in business here, conducting a
cream and produce station. She ar
ranged with the present postmistress
to remain at the office until she could
be officially checked in, which will be
next Saturday, February 15th.
Mrs. Kelley was a former post
mistress at the town of Huston, Ne
braska, resigning when she moved
from that place.
The retiring postmistress, Mi;s
Catherine Coleman, ha3 been in
charge twenty-eight years ar.d it is
with regret that the patrons of the
office see her step out as a public
servant. She has conducted the office
in a mc.it satisfactory manner and is
retiring with a splendid record behind
her. However, the incoming postmis
tress is a very capable woman and
one well qualified for the position she
i ; about to assume and the patrons of
the office may be assured of continued
good service.
Harried at Lincoln Mcr.day
Mi:s Marie Moekenhaupt, daughter
cf Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Moekenhaupt,
who reside east of Greenwood, and
James Rogenrief, of EIr.nvood. were
united in marriage at Lincoln last
Monday, after which they returned
home to break the news to their
friends. They are making their home
for the present with the parents of
the bride, as Mr. Rogenrief will en
gage in farming this coming summer
with Mr. Moekenhaupt.

ary 4, 1920, and arrived at their 15th
anniversary last Monday. A large
number of their friends wer at their
home Sunday evening just preceding
the anniversary date and assisted in
properly celebrating the event. Those
present from Greenwood included the
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Maher,
also a sister, Miss Mamie Mahar, and
the Misses Mamie and Margaret
Holke, daughters of Mr. and Mrs.
Fred Holke.
Many Honor Mrs. Birdsall
The funeral of Mrs. A. R. Birdsall,
v.cll beloved lady of this vicinity
prior to the family's removal to
Weeping Water, was held last Sunday
afternoon from the Christian church
here, being conducted by Rev. E. S.
Pangborn, pastor of the Methodist
church at Weeping Water.
The church was filled to over
flowing with friends of this splendid
woman, with a number having to
stand outside. Mrs. Birdsall was born
nearly a half eei ury ago in Green
wood and had lived here the greater
part of her life. .More complete details
of her life and death were published
in last Thursday's Journal.
Many Enjoyed Program
The program which was presented
by members of the Glee club and the
orchestra of the Greenwood high
school Thursday evening of last week
was attended by a large crowd, who
enjoyed the various numbers, show
ing their appreciation with round af
ter round of applause. The entertain
ment netted the school a nice sum,
which was used to help defray the
cost of sending contestants to the
M-I-N-K music contest at Peru Friday
and Saturday. Greenwood has a large
number of students of musical ability
and they are being well trained along
that line.
Held a Box Social
The young folks of the Epworth
League of the M. K. church held a
box social and social evening at the
church Wednesday evening. There
was not as large a crowd present asjliaies unkuo,vn. and tll persons hav-
had been anticipated due to the bad
weather. The evening was spent
playing games and in guessing con
tests, following which the boxes were
auctioned off and the proceeds proved
sufficient to net the society a neat
sum of money. '
Attended Kensington
Mrs. Dora Leesley and Mrs. W. A.
White went to Waverly Wednesday
afternoon of last week to attend the
Royal Neighbor kensington at the
home of Mrs. Singleton. The after
noon was very pleasantly spent with
a series of games and guessing con
tests. Following the social hour, de
licious refreshments were served by
the hostess and her assisting commit
tee. The local ladies say they had a
splendid time.
