Has Close Call
from Gassing
Overcome with Monoxide Gas Young
Lady Found Lying on Floor at
Her Home by Relatives.
Miss Wilma Pickard of thi3 city
had a close call from death Tuesday
at the family home on Granite
street when ehe was overcome by
monoxide gas and while much im
proved today, is still suffering a
great deal from the effects of the
gas.
Miss Pickard had gone to the base
ment of the home Tuesday morning
to start the washing for the family,
the wash room beins located adjoin
ing the garage that is also located in
the basement. The car had been run
ning while awaiting Mr. and Mrs.
John Alwin, parents of Wilma, evi
dently gas forming in the basement
garage and as the door opened seeped
on into the wash room.
The presence of the gas was not
noticed by the young woman at the
time and but for the ringing of the
telephone on the first floor of the
house she would probably have re
mained in the basement to absorb the
poisonous gas. Miss Pickard had
gone to the first floor to answer the
telephone and reaching there had
been taken with a fainting attack
and fell to the floor in an uncon
scious condition and unable to reach
the phone.
Shortly after the victim of the gas
had fained Mrs. W. A. Wells, an

aunt, had come to the Alwin home
at the same time that Mr. Alwin re
turned from taking Mrs. Alwin to
her duties at the post office. They
entered the house to find Wilma on
Lhe floor and unconscious. Dr. R. P.
Westover wa3 called and gave what
aid was possible and the victim of
the gas partially revived but could
not recall her coming up the stairs.
This morning she had been able
to throw off a part of the effects of
the gas but was still confined to
her home and under care.

The Catholic Daughters of Am
erica held their joint initiation and
installation of officers Sunday after
noon at the Eagles hall, a large num
ber of the membership being in at
tendance as well as visitors from
Xebraska City.
The new members received in the
order were Mrs. Thomas J. Walling
and Mis3 Lucille Case, the local of
ficers carrying out the ritualistic
work of the order.
Miss Veronica O'Connor, Omaha,
?rand state regent, was present and
poke on the work of the order as did
Miss Elizabeth Kernan, district de
puty and state chairman of the
Junior Catholic Daughters.
Following the Initiation the new-
elected officers were installed in
their respective offices and were
greeted by the membership of the
order.
The Nebraska City visitors were
headed by Miss Margaret Meyer,
grand regent and who brought with
her a goodly number of the ladies
from that city.
At the close of the afternoon
dainty refreshments prepared by the
committee were served by the mem
bers 01 me junior uaugnters in a
ery charming manner.

LITTLE BANK LEGISLATION
Washington. President Roosevelt
and Senator Glass, of Virginia, au
thority on banking, talked for an
hour in a meeting which brought a
declaration afterwards from the sen
ator that he saw little necessity for
new banking legislation at this ses
sion of congress. The Virginia sen
ator declined to discuss the views of
the president, but there is every
indication that few changes will be
sought in the banking laws. Secre
tary Morgenthau has said he wishes
to hold banking legislation to a
minimum.
"It is just as important to pre
vent evil legislation as to enact good
legislation." commented Senator
Glass who was the author of much
of the banking reform enacted b7
the last congress.
Glass, a conservative, has ques
tioned many of the administration's
actions.
APPEALS NBA CONVICTION
Philadelphia. An appeal from a
U. S. district court conviction on
national recovery administration
code violation charges was argued
in the circuit court here by counsel
for Harry Sley and the Sley System
garages on grounds Sley is not en
gaged in interstate commerce and
the national recovery act is unconstitutional.
